I didn't really become a fan of basketball until I was like 9 or 10, everybody loves Jordan, and of course I liked watching Michael, but Hakeem and the Rockets are what made me an NBA fan for life. Others can argue Shaq or Wilt or BIll, but Hakeem is my GOAT.

Hakeem is the best center ever. Offensively, people talk about the dream shake, but his baseline fadaway was UNBLOCKABLE, and I've seen him destroy other teams with that single move over and over because they could do nothing about it. Defensively, no question he was the best ever. All time Blocks leader, all time steal leader for a center. People say Shaq was better, but all Shaq had on everyone was freakish size. You get him 10 ft from the basket, and he was worthless. The NBA changed the rules so he could bully people what was suppose to be a foul on him was a foul now on the defender and that rule change made him a superstar If he's at the top offensively The very top Defensively HE IS THE BEST EVER.
@ChrisM07
@ChrisM07 4 месяца назад
Shaq played with superstar/HOF guards almost his entire career (Penny's injuries prevented him from being a HOFer himself but he was obviously a superstar when him and Shaq played together). On this Rockets team the most consistent guard in crunch time was Cassell, a rookie.

@ChrisM07 Год назад
@@hectorlopez1069 This Rockets team did have the personnel to beat them, when Thorpe was there they played the EC style of ball which was extremely defensive minded. After Thorpe was traded for Drexler the Rockets started playing the style that was more common in the West. They still were a good defensive team at times but their frontline was more vulnerable without Thorpe and Herrera.

Houston was destined to win in 94. It took a 7th game Overtime and 3 horrible calls against the Rockets in that O.T. for Seattle to pull it out. In 94 the Rockets added Cassell and Ellie to the bench and would've won regardless of who they played that year.
@ChrisM07
@ChrisM07 4 месяца назад
@@elbertbass9259 The Sonics in 96 had an easier path out the West in general. The Kings were practically a 1 man team (the 2nd half of the last game without Richmond validated that) and the Rockets had Chucky Brown out of position at PF while also were playing their 6th consecutive series w/o hca. Considering those things the Sonics should've gotten to the wcf and they capitalized on it. The team that lost to the Nuggets would've had a much tougher road out of the West, the majority of the players on the Nuggets had no playoff experience and still were able to exploit all of the Sonics achilles heels more experienced teams in the following rounds would've obviously done the same thing.

To you younger viewers. You cannot appreciate how crazy it was during game five. The game was on then all of a sudden all the networks switched to BREAKING NEWS!!!! It was the OJ chase, suddenly the game wasn't even on and you see a white bronco being chased down a freeway. Eventually NBC put the game on really small on the bottom of the screen. The game was secondary. Everyone was on the edge of their seats. The possibility of OJ blowing his head off on national tv was realistic. Anyway he ended up turning himself in and the rockets lost so we were disappointed at both outcomes 😮
@Plasmawarrior

I remember watching that on T.V. for a bit. You could say the OJ case started the rise of celebrity social media, although it would be before the internet. I'd like to say that Princess Diana's death was the last great moment before the internet age took off, but imagine the insanity that would have brought us if something like that Ford Bronco being put all over the internet would have been like.

@@hectorlopez1069 The George Karl-Rudy Tomjanovich era is when the matchups actually mattered with them being contending teams. The Sonics "having their number" is hugely overstated 96 was the only time the Sonics beat them convincingly with Chucky Brown as the starting PF, he had to play low post defense on the Sonics forwards which he wasn't used to doing and needed help often which gave the Sonics numerous open shot opportunities. The Sonics FG% average was significantly lower when Thorpe was there he was very psychical and usually was able to guard players straight up w/o double team help.

The Sonics weren't even the team to beat in the West at the time the Suns were with them being the reigning conference champions. The Rockets lost hca in that series going on the road trailing 0-2 and still ended up winning in the end. There was no way they were losing the wcf at that point regardless. The Rockets w/Thorpe were a top 5 defensive team the Sonics definitely weren't getting all those open looks they got in 96 where they shot over 50% in both the regular season and postseason series.
@elbertbass9259
@elbertbass9259 4 месяца назад
@ChrisM07 all the Rockets needed to do was pick up Kevin Willis for 97 and keep that championship team together for another run. Barkley was a mistake because he took away from Olajuwon. Drexler knew how to win with Hakeem from their college days, but Barkley demanded the ball when it should've gone into Hakeem. The two Chicago games in 97 are a perfect example. The first game, Chicago, blew the Rockets out with Barkley in the lineup. The second game Barkley was hurt, and Hakeem had a monster game with the Rockets blowing the Bulls out. The same could be said with the Utah series. Without Barkley, the Rockets knocked the jazz out of the playoffs in 94 and 95, but then they added Barkley, and Utah wins in 6 in 97 I really believe the owner thought he knew something about basketball and told Rudy to destroy a championship team to get Barkley just like he did with Drexler in 95.
@ChrisM07
@ChrisM07 4 месяца назад
@@elbertbass9259 You're right but Barkley wanted to go there and Rudy understandably couldn't say no. I do believe they were thinking about getting Willis first though so Rudy decided to just get them both. Having 2 ball dominant low post players caused too much standing around and "my turn your turn" offense which was probably the reason the Rockets didn't put the Sonics away immediately after winning G3 and G4 on the road.
