Trees looking very healthy Alyssa and fruit set is promising. Hopefully they’ll ripen in summer so there’s a maximum chance of sweetness. The fruit is ready to pick when the calyx (where the fruit is connected to the stem) raises. While to go yet. Good planning in protecting the trees from wind chill. As an addition, you can use light throws over the plastic or over unprotected trees on very cold nights. Bureau temperatures are measured at 4 foot high so there would be ground frosts for sure on 1C and 2C nights. Light throws are cheap (less than $10) at supermarkets or discount stores. On cold still nights they won’t need pegging. They can be left on for days especially the temps don’t rise over 13C. It’s important to peg the plastic enclosures tightly to keep as much warmth in as possible. Having the netting over the 1st one will provide some protection but the throw will be better. The throws will be invaluable on sensitive trees like Rollinia and Hog plum. Any tree that is showing leaf damage or loss now, it’s essential to protect them 1st. The last black sapote looks like a seedling. Seedlings are the best way to go. Have more vigour and are generally sturdier. The Tahiti variety is obviously most cold sensitive probably originating from the island. Varieties are specific to a location and perform well there but out of that region may not do as well.
Hi Brett Thanks for nice words 😊 Good luck with your seedlings trees, hopefully they growth well for you . You work hard with all your fruit trees 👍 Thanks so much for watching 🙏
I have been growing mine from seeds & one of them got stolen by a cleaner while I was at work last year, they clean for my mother & they also stole one of my Hibiscus plants which I grew from cuttings,my dad got a cutting off his great aunties old hibiscus plant at Byron Bay probably about 46 years ago after I was born & grew the plant from that. I have been growing more black sapote seedlings from seed from last year & they will be finally planted in the ground by next year when I move,I think that the trick is to keep the black sapote seedlings out of a spot where they're going to get burned by frost because I just I have lost a few black sapote plants that way !
