Leave her for wanting the guy that claims to be dating her to take her out on an actual date like any decent boyfriend would? She’s not asking for her own private Boeing 757. She just asking for normal fun dates and fun activities like vacation, dinner out, and movies. Their parents are to blame for not paying for their college and therefore condemning them to this boring miserable life, but if these minor normal expenses are taking such a toll on him, then he probably majored in one of Dave’s favorites like “German Polka History” and should’ve chosen a different major and needs to make a career change. All of the business majors his age that I know do all of those things and can easily afford to do it and don’t go into debt to do it. They eat out all the time, go to the Bahamas, buy brand new luxury vehicles, and own houses and luxury condos and max out their 401ks. No woman wants to live such a boring life. I’m a man and I wouldn’t want to live that life either. That’s why I myself majored in business and do all of these things for me and my wife and our kids and it doesn’t put any stress on my finances at all.

Life is boring and miserable without those things. How could any parent put their kids in a position to where they wouldn’t be able to do anything fun or provide for their girlfriend and condemn them to a life of misery as soon as the graduate?

I think it's much more fun being debt-free and at least trying to build a financially comfy retirement vs eventually declaring bankruptcy, fighting with family/relatives over money, and/or cops serving you papers because your creditors are breathing down your neck.

It is fine to value these things but not at the expense of prudent financial planning. After bills are paid, investments are paid into and I pad a little extra into emergency- I am free to plan a vacation or have fun.

No woman wants to live the boring life he’s advocating for.

So he should just do nothing and not apply himself so they end up living in a trailer and then have even less money to do anything fun? What kind of boyfriend or husband does that to their girlfriend or wife? And it’s not just about her. If they have children, it’s his job to provide for those children. Hahah okay bud keep living in your fantasy life. Vacations aren't cheap. Eating out, occasionally, might be fine but we don't really know the fine details of the situation. They could both have medical degrees and have a ton of debt with not a lot of income yet due to just starting out. Who knows? Maybe the girlfriend has the useless degree you mentioned and makes peanuts but is demanding to go on expensive vacations. Did you think about that?

@@TheFlyingZulu Actually parents should in fact pay for their children's college. They should have a college fund set up way before the child is ready to enter college. Unfortunately a lot of parents are backwards and throw their kids under the bus and have poor financial habits. I understand some parents may not be able to do such but for most it is expected. You should want to make sure your child is cared for and debt free.

If someone like a parent or relative wants to help pay back a student loan, thats fine but don't stand back and expect someone to pay the whole thing back for you. As far as the call goes I agree with the caller's concern. Vacations are NOT a "normal" expense. They are a luxury and should be postponed until any outstanding debt is paid off if you want to live a financial stress free life. And I am sure the caller and his girlfriend have been on dates after a year of being together. He wants to limit them until his debts are paid for which is something any responsible would do.

The only tangible thing he said she disagreed with is a lack of desire to aggressively pay down student loans, which are currently suspended. HES the one who feels shame an anxiety due to having a manageable student loan debt and feels guilty for spending on entertainment, which is pretty out there. Those are his emotions, not intellectual arguments for financial success.

But you don't know how the other side would have looked. Imagine you had your fun and spent your money. Then when you're in your 30's and 40's you're struggling when you were supposed to be and feel comfortable. What's needed is balance. Not to be at both extremes of the financial scale.
