There are so many rude people on here geez. The guy clearly is trying to improve his life and move forward, otherwise, he wouldn't be calling. Yunno not everyone has the same opportunity for education nor being good at public speaking. It's REALLY common to overuse words such as "like", "um", "just" when nervous public speaking.

Break up. If you don't agree on money when you're in a relationship you'd definitely not agree on money with you're in a marriage. And it's a lot harder and far more expensive to leave a marriage. Just because you've been dating for a long while doesn't mean you're bound to that person. She can keep doing her thing and he can continue with his, but they can't keep being separate like this when it comes to their finances. Especially when marriage comes around. Their problems are just going to be amplified.

She can keep doing her thing and he can continue with his, but they cannot keep being separate like this when it comes to their finances. This is especially when marriage comes around. Their problems will be amplified." Not really. If she is doing her own thing and he is too, they can have separate accounts and pay into a combined one and actually, this will benefit him (if he is a breadwinner). When she decides to separate, she can just keep what she earned. This actually does work, more often than does not and really, even if the marriage falls apart, it is no big deal. I would estimate that more people fall into depression because they know they do not have $ than because they lost someone.

I was married for 24 years and then divorced. My current GF and I have been together for 30 years. It works because she knows that if she wants to leave she can, but she is not going to get alimony, half my assets, or my house. She was subsidized for many years because I wanted her assets to grow. I helped her with her investments and now our net worths are about equal and we share expenses equally.

I GET being nervous and stumbling over your words. This is why I practice a lot of conversations and especially conversations where I should be conveying a fair amount of information in a short period of time. (It doesn’t need to be a word for word stilted script, just practice the convo a few times!)

Pleasantly surprised Dave mentioned having a Chihuahua instead of kids as a legit choice people might make. He does such a great job of supporting people, even if their choices aren't necessarily the ones he would personally make.
