Today's video will be short and sweet. I'll be reviewing how to order author copies of your book from Amazon KDP. As an author you have a few options:
1. Order your book from Amazon.com and pay full retail price
2. Order proof copies at cost, but they have the "proof" band on them
3. Order author copies that you can use for marketing, giveaways, or book fairs.

The lady commentator suggested not to buy retail as Amazon's analytics would report this, and it might appear as if you're trying to artificially boost your sales figures.

I was thinking the same thing! My husband just bought author copies for a book fair he's doing but when he told me how much he had to pay I said it would have been better for him to purchase them retail as with the royalties he gets back it works out cheaper!

Hello, I’m hoping you can share some insight as to whether or not authors can receive copies of their book ahead of release/publication. My intent is to share these copies with media outlets for review ahead of release to hopefully build anticipation for release. Would this simply be the the proof copies? Thanks in Advance!

With KDP you can order proof copies before the book is published (they will have a band printed across that reads "proof" ) or an author copy after you publish. You can print copies with a local printer to send out ahead of time if you only want them to go out pre-release. If you do a print pre-order via IngramSpark then you can order early copies that way was well. Best of luck!

What's your advice on book formats for your launch team? I was planning on sending physical copies to them for free in return for a review on Amazon but now I've just found out that you can only order author copies once the book is live. I want to give anyone who reviews my book the full quality experience of the finished product but how can I do that if only proof copies are available pre-launch?

Hi Charlie, Great question. I do a print preorder for all of my books via IngramSpark so I am able to get author copies ahead of launch and could send those to my launch team. You could so go to a local printer to have copies made to send out early. I send my early reviewers a digital copy (eBook or audiobook if it is available). Most understand the book may not be printed yet. You can always send a physical copy after the book launches as a thank you. Best of luck!

So I just bought two author copies to send to my book buyers who bought in my sales funnel, but because of the way I have it priced on Amazon, it will actually be cheaper for me to buy the book on Amazon instead of buying author copies. Recommendations? Still go through with author copies or just buy and ship to their address using Amazon?

I would double check how you are pricing the book. Unless you have a very expensive shipping option selected or are making very very slim margins on the book, you should always save by ordering author copies.

Yes, author copies look just like one a reader would buy. Proof copies have the "not for resale" band printed on the front.

I don't believe so. I think before the book is published you can only order proofs but I have not tried this recently so they may have changed

Hmm im not sure about adding other items to the cart to see if shipping costs will go away, I haven't tried that. The cost of the book should just be printing (and shipping).

The cost is different for everyone based on 1. The print cost of the book 2. The shipping speed you set. You can go in and add to cart and see what the shipping options are.

In this case I think you need clarification from the publisher, it sounds like they sent you the retail link to pay full price

Hi, I just published my first novel as a KDP paperback. But in India, they don't have printing facilities, so I had to choose the US as the primary marketplace. I want to have some author copies, and to do that, I've got to choose the same marketplace as the primary marketplace, right?

I get that they aren't going to add an author's purchase to the "Bestseller" total #; however, do they limit how many the author can buy? Ex. Quantity 50 for a book signing or book fair..?

I just put my book on KDP yesterday and read you can order up to 999 copies/order. My question is does Amazon send you a form at tax time to claim earnings, or do I need to keep good records in a separate bank account?

@@tiffanylindsay2904 Amazon does send a 1099. Yay! If you order any author copies you need to keep a receipt if you plan to claim that as a business expense.

Great one. I have a different question, I’m in the process of doing my first hard copy of my first paperback. Do you need to use different tools for the same manuscript? I’m having issue with my cover too as the design is over the bleed line 😓

Not sure what you mean by different tools. But your paperback needs to be formatted differently than your ebook, KDP has tempaltes you can use to input the book into the correct format. Same goes for the cover, they have templates to use to make sure there is enough bleed/trim. If you are having issues, I suggest checking out Formatted Books. They do print interiors AND covers and they make it SO easy: formattedbooks.com/?ref=31

Check that you are logged into the correct account. Some authors have a personal Amazon account and one for their author activity. If you log in with the wrong email it would be empty

You can upload to KDP Print and they approve the title within 72 hours, from there shipping can take a week or so.

No, you can't do a preorder for Amazon KDP print, just a pre schedule. Once the book is uploaded but not published or scheduled to go live you can order proof copies, they have the not for resale band on them. To order author copies the book needs to be published or prescheduled.

Yes, if a store wanted to stock your book they would purchase it through their distribution network. Ingram is one of the largest. Yes, you can order author copies as many times as you would like/need. I think they limit the orders to 100 (or 500) so 20 at a time should be no problem

Yes, that would be your proof copy. Go through the upload process all the way through except don't hit publish. Instead hit save. From the bookshelf you'll see your draft book and you should see the option to finish set up or order a proof copy. Best of luck!

When a customer clicks the order button in a book funnel, where does a paperback book come from?

It depends in where you are sending them to. If you are sending them to a retailer website, their POD service will send it. If you send to your own website you have to manage inventory and shipping or work with a drop shipper to do so

Thanks for another helpful video. Have you had difficulty with your author copies being defective? Every author book I have ordered has come from the SC plant and they have had several issues... Purple tint to print, printed crooked on page... Pages stuck together. They have taken my information and I'm waiting to hear something back, but in the meantime I'm on hold because I can't get books for a book signing. Have you ever had that issue? If so, what did you do to resolve the situation? Thanks. I really appreciate your videos. 🙂

Hi Juanita, I've not have those specific issues but I seem to have problems every time I order author copies from IS and they print out of Fresno, CA. Boot prints on my books. Shipments that don't get from the warehouse to USPS. Book pages falling out. Seems each company has their own weak spot for quality. If you have already photographed and documented this then I would wait for their process to resolve and get some makegood copies. In the meantime, if you need more copies I would suggest ordering more to have in time for your signing. Best of luck!

No hope 😭😂 my friend has a book series and a chairty and i have become an admin for her, so she trained me up to use kdp to order books, she showed me the ridiculous way you have to do it by having to open uo kdp EVERYTIME 😂 i was like instantly NOO! You can set up the book and order a proof copy before it is available on sale for anyone to buy. You can only order an author copy without the band printed around the book once the book is live. So readers could buy it and if you spot issues it is already out in the world

When you preview the eBook when you upload you can download a copy to your computer so you don't have to purchase the digital copy, no. If you want a print copy then you just pay print and shipping cost for an author copy.

Congratulations on your new book! Are you looking at the drop down menu next to the paperback version of the book on your bookshelf? That's odd if author copies aren't showing, they usually have the option right below the printed proofs option.

how does selling paperback works after publishing ? do u need to order copies and then list on amazon seller or just publish on kindle and its done. as why would kindle pay for printing each copy? new to this pls help.

If you use Amazon KDP the paperbacks are sold as print on demand. If you want to sell signed books directly to readers then I'd suggest setting up a shop on your website. I DO NOT recommend using both KDP and Seller Central.

@@1MKWilliams kdp doesn't take print charge from me for each copy they sell? As it shows printing cost on pricing page . Why would kdp do it for free ?

@@rayhankhan2280 the royalty is the retail price less printing and a distribution fee to amazon. I have a ton of other videos all about Amazon KDP if you want to check them out

I believe the limit is 100 or 500 per order.
