I once heard a quote that said," The moment you give your kids a smart phone is the moment they lose their childhood."

Totally agree but - the problem I have is that EVERYTHING i do is on my phone. Need my kid's favorite recipe? On my phone. Schedule a Dr appointment? On my phone. Ordering groceries? On my phone. Kid needs school supplies? On my phone. Need a plumber? On my phone. Refill prescriptions? My phone. I don't know how to not be on my phone in front of my kids when it's replaced everything: yellow pages, grocery store, department store, home improvement store, pharmacy, etc.
@richardraymond8
@richardraymond8 3 месяца назад
You can still get yellow pages, write the recipes down, call the doc. All of that is still feasible it's just something that makes things so much more convenient.

I have always said that an important element of resisting technology is to offer your child something better. Children are looking for connection, so talking to them, playing with them and doing activities with them will help. Also, as they approach middle school, They will want to connect more with their peers. We made our home a place where their friends were welcome, as long as they followed our rules. We gave them plenty of opportunities to socialize in person. Lastly, they saw mom and dad put their phones away at dinner, when we had friends over, Or in some cases, for the whole day. The one element of this is not being discussed is instant gratification. It’s important for your children to know that they will not always have their wants and desires met instantly, and that nothing horrible will result from that. I don’t envy parents trying to navigate raising children in this age of technology. It is a rough job!

True but they need to be on technology like the rest of the world for their future. Isolation is not healthy either in our new world. It's like saying..."ah, don't learn to type" 40 years ago.
@ineedhoez
@ineedhoez Год назад
@@JustinCase780 how did you get that from what was posted? Nothing in that comment suggested that a kid will be isolated or technologically illiterate
@JustinCase780
@JustinCase780 Год назад
@@ineedhoez Read it again..."resisting technology" Young people need the full technological engagement to pace with the world and to have a future. Parents trying to live in the dark ages will regret it when they see their kids fail in life being illiterate on standard platforms which everyone in their generation will embrace worldwide.

Preschoolers do NOT need exposure to cell phones, tablets, or laptops. Nor do they need to see their parents excessively using 'devices'. Preschoolers need lots of personal contact with parents, siblings, & extended family. They will benefit from trips to a public library, especially their programs for youngsters. At home, they need to see their parents reading, plus have time with adults reading to them. Preschoolers need to hear classical music. Trips to parks provide exposure to nature and fresh air. The same can be said of museum. The vastness of culture, life and loving communicative relationships will prepare kids for a great future. Begin with authenticity. Technology can come later.

This is SO helpful! I especially like when he says to put the phone down when the kids come in the room or at least inform them that you're finishing up what you're doing on your phone.

Technology is a pacifier, specifically the phone . We use it when we’re bored , tired , lonely , etc . Also creatively lies just outside of boredom. If they always have the instant dopamine rush , they’ll never go for the other .

@@deadaccount2048 Well, one can't guarantee anybody about having kids, but I hope you will, and hope you do already are thinking about how to be a good parent, already now as a kid. The best parents have always done so. Promised themselves how they will raise their kids one day, with love and wisdom. You indeed should think a lot about your future and the future of your own family! All the best wishes - nobody has the right to steal your future and your dreams. Be active and be brave! We’re raising our children as close as possible to the way our parents raised us. We were kept busy with school and sports that the little free time we had was used to go out as a family. We are teaching them to use technology as a tool to make our lives easier. Nothing more. They only see us use it when it’s necessary. We do not have social media and never spend hours on end just scrolling through nonsense. But nothing is guarantee so we can only hope they’ll be able to use technology devises wisely.

Kids don't need a phone until they are driving and even then, they can have a flip phone. This is what we do. If they need to use a phone and/or app, they use mine for their project and then give it back. And find other families to be friends with that share similar values. That way they can interact with peers that aren't addicted to phones also.

My girls are 14, 12 and 9; and almost all their friends have phones. I'm thinking when they are driving they get a flip phone to call home. When they are up and out they can buy their own smartphone. They're Flippin expensive too!! Also - read "Simplicity Parenting" by K J Payne- excellent guide for Parenting with simple values.

This is what my parents did. Didn't get a smart phone till college and didn't get cellphone till like 15-16. Use a walkie talkie if they go out nearby and you want to still get in contact. If I wanted to contact friends call them using the house phone.

Even if your kid doesn't become a professional computer and programming expert, it is a skill that will be useful for any person in the future, if we don't screw up the planet totally. Instead of allowing small kids passively sit at war-games, you can limitedly teach your kid simple programming principles. (There are good instruction books for that.) You can supply them with language, math, history, geography, biology, and society-building programs to learn from, take an interest in the topics. Of course you as a parent need to give them lots of time. A simpler house, simpler car(s), simpler holidays, simpler but good quality everything, will give you more time for family. Then it is also easier to involve children to do things with you - from really early on, even babies can be there when you do household chores (they will disturb more than help in the beginning, but that's part of the process, it takes time, let it take time, speak a lot). Always together as much as possible. Sing, play, cook, bake, read books, color, draw, invent stories, use board games in no competive ways, use hammer, saw, measures, crochet, knit, sew, dance, ... make "expeditions" to learn things, to parks, libraries, museums, beaches, woods, start hobbies, in all weathers. For a stable mental health: Be silly many times every day, as today's children need a lot of daily kind laughter. If you notice that you are not interested in such play with your children, then you have driven yourself too hard and are too tired! Warning!!! As a parent you have to be aware of that risk, don't let yourself be exhausted, something has to give - how can you simplify your life, so that joy of life, joy in your kids can return? Today's kids need to learn to laugh, joke, play from their parents - school is too earnest and too much sitting and be quiet, working mechanically, it is not good at all.

My kids didn’t get cell phones until they were going into 6th grade. Their friends had them in 2nd grade. They weren’t happy but I wanted to limit the exposure to things they don’t need to see as kids. I’ve set time limits on my phone but I do struggle to put it down when I’m in the middle of a text. Do you tell the person you’re texting that you have to go when if you’re in the middle of a conversation? Same issue when on a phone call. I have been better with putting my phone down when my kids talk to me but I don’t know how to put the other person off.
