The Green Burial Council has been the most active with using this term but it has been around the funeral business for a while...butterdishing. What is it and why would it be used?! Kari the Mortician explains!

So interesting, this whole vault thing facinates me. I'll never look at my butter dish the same way. Honestly our cemeteries aren't collapsing everywhere, I assume they just add dirt and grass seed when needed. I have visions of sink holes everywhere, they don't look like that. I only know of one guy whose car wheel sunk into a grave but honestly why was he driving over the graves!

Why not pour "construction sand" around an above the body for 6 to 12 inches which compacts easily, then compact the soil to grade level in lifts. This will prevent the grave from collapsing. If you want contact with natural soil, use a screened soil with good compaction characteristics.

In 2019 I watched a veteran friend of mine buried in a National Cemetery in a standard metal casket covered by a composite “butter dish” burial vault. The vault was able to be placed over the casket manually by two men. I know that previously, all burials at National Cemeteries here on Long Island NY used standard concrete burial vaults with a concrete lid and required mechanical equipment to be placed. A more cost effective method to achieve the same result?

I bought a plot near my parents. And in that section it is very active with burials going on almost daily. And I went to the funeral home office to tell them that the two graves next to mine was very ditchy. In other words it was sunken in big time. And I saw other graves that were sunken in also ? And it is required to have a vault on all graves in this cemetery. So I'm not really believing that vault prevent sunken graves ?
@KaritheMortician

THey do not always. Sometimes you have roots and such that eventually decay and you get sinking or animals create tunnels that collapse.

@@KaritheMortician My mon was buried in 1984 two spots from a mature tree. My dad was buried on top in 2019 no problem never any sinking. Grave next to mine (My future neighbors who died like five years ago had very serious sunken graves) have no trees nearby and the ones closest are saplings. If this was facebook I post a pic. But you get the idea I think. I still want a vault for myself, just in case some developer wants my space 100 years from now. They will have to work hard to move me out lol.

Butterdishing? That's a new one for me. It sounded like something you'd only find the definition for on sites like Urban Dictionary. Here in New England, some cemeteries allow Orthodox vaults, ie. a vault with a hole in the bottom. Just backfill around the box, set the lid in place and let nature go to work. Grave collapse avoided.

If the religion requires a vault, where the casket is placed in the vault, and covered up, than the "Butterdish" wouldn't work. In the Jewish faith, this holds true, as the body isn't embalmed.

Hello Kari, I haven’t commented for awhile but when I saw the word butter dish you got my attention real fast. My parents preplanned their funerals sometime in the 1990’s. Both my parents paid for vaults that were called butter dishes. My dad passed away before my mom in 2014. My sister did not want to pay extra for a cement vault so my dad was buried in a butter dish. This has really upset me. The butter dish my dad was buried in is not how you explained it. It was made of some type of steel or metal. They put my dads casket on the bottom of the butter dish and then put the top on. Then the workers used two steel or metal straps and pulled them really tight around the whole butter dish. They then lowered my dad into the ground. My mom passed away in 2016 and she told me before she passed away to cremate her. I know it sounds crazy but I was relieved my mom wasn’t going in a butter dish. I can’t get the butter dish out of my mind. I keep thinking there is nothing left of my dad. Have you seen this type of butter dish vault I explained? It looked very flimsy and not made very well. I also live in Michigan. I live north of Detroit. Thank you for all your videos. You have a very interesting page.
