NOTIFICATION SQUAD: The video starts at 07:52. Am I right though? Is it just me or do 9/10 TV shows and films in Japan kick off with someone walking across Shibuya crossing?! Sorry about the wait for this video folks - I've been working hard on Journey Across Japan: Escape to Fuji! For more details on the upcoming series you can check it out here (www.abroadinjapan.com/escape-to-fuji). It's going to be a lot of fun and it kicks off in the last week of October! The only question remains, should we bring back Dr Jelly? Hmm...

I cannot think of another place on earth that that would be the case. It says a lot about the level of morality common in the people. Mind, in other places, the done thing would be for someone to pick up a left-behind valuable and hand it over to the owner of the establishment for safe keeping and that's generally a done thing in the UK where I live unless you're in a busy city I guess.

Can definitely relate. Especially when you're biking around (great for exercise) you can just park your bike on one area which may be full of your belongings on the basket and go to a convenience store for some drinks or the bathroom and see your stuff in one piece once you get back. Make's traveling around the city by bike less stressful and more fun overall, helped me a lot on losing weight as well.

It might be the Bri'ish culture of 'banter', that is basically offending your friends. Maybe it can be translated to American English as 'roasting', but 1) I'm not a British-American culture pro to claim it certainly enough; 2) AFAIK British banter seems to be less funny, more offensive and less aimed at the potential audience to appreciate the joke you make, thus making it more sincere and wholesome IMO. When you banter, you just tell your friend he's a strawberry cheesecake-eating fatso for the sake of saying it, not for the societal credit and dominance points you'd get from publicly 'roasting' him.

I know this is a super late comment, but I've been binging your content recently. The last point you made about how Japan has made you more appreciative of things really resonated with me. I was born and raised in America, but ever since I was really young I've always had such a high regard for my possessions, especially my electronics. Maybe it was because I was shown Totoro and saw the original Toy Story in theaters around when I was a toddler, but I have also felt a sense of "life" in the things that I own, leading me to treat them with a lot more respect than I can imagine the average person would. It's just always been pretty normal to me to treat objects with a sort of reverence, so it's heartening to hear that there's more of a culture of that over in Japan. I've always wanted to go to Japan, but your channel and others like yours have been a big inspiration to really make a serious push to go. Keep it up and I hope you're still enjoying life over there. Thanks for doing what you do

As a native Japanese I have to point out that when you put a sheet on your futon, you tuck it under on all four sides, otherwise the sheet comes loose from the sides as you move about while you sleep and you are essentially sleeping on a bare futon, which then completely takes away the whole purpose of putting the sheet on in the first place, which is to keep your futon clean and free of germ that comes off of your body. Keep up the great work nonetheless, Chris - from a big fan of yours.

when I was a kid, I treated objects like living things. Anything I played a lot with, I treated them like they were my best friend. But my family and the people around me found that weird and broke my stuff or they'd get stolen. I lost a part of myself since then, but hearing you tell me that parents tell their children to treat their objects like living things really brought it all back. I watch Japanese vtubers and they also add kun and san at the end of objects. It's really endearing and funny. Great video btw, watched until the very end, as always!

One day I decided to sing a 'thank you song' I made up to our family car - to express my gratitude for carrying my family around. I thought that our car would feel hurt that nobody appreciated what it did. Then my dad came and was utterly confused by what I was doing XD

"What does Japan smell like?" is a silly question, but one of the most memorable things from my trip there was walking past an alley and getting hit by the incredible smell from some tiny noodle shop. And this happened multiple times. It was mainly the cognitive dissonance, coming from a country where alleys do not smell like that, that really cemented it in my mind.

As David says, the aromas of various cuisines stick indelibly in mind. So much so that if a "Japanese" restaurant where I now live does not smell like Japan, I won't eat there. However, Japan can also smell like a cloud of diesel thick enough to close your throat as buses idle at a rest stop. Or incense drifting across the neighbourhood from temple grounds. Or a natto fart rising from a sewer grate as you wait at a traffic light. Or various minerals borne out of the earth on vapours rising from an onsen. I could go on and on....

The idea of every object having a life force has some truth to it. Every man made object was made with some sort of hard work, sacrifice, and passion. Same thing when it comes to other objects found in nature every thing was made from a certain process it didn’t just pope into existence. So I guess Japanese ancient culture realized that and people in Japan subconsciously carry this thought. Still it is a really good lesson to teach to kids. Makes you more attentive and caring towards your surrounding environment.

Exactly. Even if it's mass-produced, somebody did design it, design the molds, choose material and finish, designed the interface, software or whatever. In western culture, people seem to bash things without thought, be it an item, show, or even another person on the internet as if they aren't real somehow (seriously, they are, and they have feelings too just like you!). In Japanese culture, people seem to be more mindful each others' and just about everything's existence.
