J.P. Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon told the Wall Street Journal that he was fed up with Zoom calls and is ready to get workers back to the office. A recent survey by Korn Ferry shows that one-third of workers would turn down a job offer that requires them to work full time in an office. I don’t want to hustle. I don’t want to collaborate. I don’t want to hear about your weekend. I want to log on from my home office, never see a soul, never commute, and still make money. And during the pandemic I thankfully found a job that works with that.

Employers demanding people to come back to the office just don't get it. There's no point in workers wasting 5 to 10 hours a week commuting through rush hour when we can just get our work done at home. If I have to go back into the office full time, I'm just gonna change my job. I'd rather spend the 5 to 10 hours doing anything else besides sitting there in rush hour. Edit: I left my job at Chase that was underpaying, and demanded people to come in the office. Place I left to offers 100% remote, pays way more, and asks me to do less work, and doesn't have a toxic culture. Almost everyone I worked with wants to leave Chase. And funny enough, Dimon was trying to force everyone back in the office 5 days a week. JPMCya 👋

Let people decide whether or not they want to come into the office. People should work to live not live to work.

@@craigbowen4659 The cooperate bully types also want people to come in so they can get their supply and lord over them "in their place." Yeah, half the problem is toxic office politics which is shut off 95% - 100% at home. Without worker drones all huddled together in an office, these office psychos can't hold "court." So now, the best they can do is semi-bully people back to the office, but most aren't stupid enough to fully do so....they still gotta make that office life "appealing", and they're not going to achieve that by being their normal, wretched selves away from the office, trying to persuade others how "wonderful" it is, and the "economy." Won't someone pleeeese think of the economyyyy? They are whining for a simple reason. The little guys keep them filthy rich by partaking in things from gas, hotel, travel, etc. They NEED "their inferior pawns" to be where they are, and when the inferior pawns don't cooperate, they suffer. The thing with these mental freaks is the added bonus of not being able to empathize, adapt, or see into the future long term, and see what's working. All they care about is money. If their money isn't coming in as it once was, and if it's not benefiting them by means they know, it's bad. That's it. That's all they know, and the only foresight they can possibly think of is: Get back to square 1. How? They don't care, but get back to square 1. It kills me how these CEO's, and people like them who thrive off of toxic workplace interaction are talking as if they will end up forcing people to return to the office whether they want it or not, and they are soooo sure that people will blindly return to their place, which reeks of slave-like undertones. They are 100% right when they say psychopaths/sociopaths saturate the top in the cooperate world. These personality types are too dense to realize that their demands, and cocky assurance that complete strangers will just blindly follow their demands to benefit their greed turns most people off, and disgusts them. Which I guess is a boon for the rest of us. Let these CEOs show their true colors, so people can get the heck outta dodge. These personality types not only want the "trickle down" to help fuel auto, gas, food, travel, it's something else entirely. In addition, these kinds of people get no dopamine supply from Facetime, Skype, chat rooms, phone calls, texts, Zoom, etc. It doesn't provide the face to face contact they crave. That's the main issue here. It has been found and studied that these personalty types NEED real-time, interaction to get their "fix" so to speak. They NEED to be the ones looking over hundreds of people at work and feel like kings/queens, they NEED to actually place their hand on your shoulder, smell what fragrance you're wearing, hear your footsteps in the their same place of existence. They NEED to be able to see the outfit your wearing, compete with your outfit, copy it, tear it down, and make little snide remarks, corrections and banter. They NEED that face to face competition you get surrounded by crowds of people. They NEED to get their ego boost by holding court, and making examples out of people, or reprimanding others in front of the right people to get their fix. They NEED those over glorified social lunches to brown nose, gossip, or look down on their underlings. Yes, technically, this can all be done virtually, with a hella-lotta spine-bending work, but it's just not the same as in real life, and the effort to try and halfway replicate this virutally just isn't worth the squeeze. And besides, home is private domain. Once you think of trying to start treating people like trash, try and dole out abuse, and set up convoluted demands in people's own home over the internet, and things are DOCUMENTED to the letter, things can get REAL ugly, REAL quickly. So these types of horrible bosses aren't going to risk that, they want you IN their domain in real time. And when certain people don't get this interaction, they LOATHE it. THAT'S why they want their supply (people) back to the plantation. Another thing is this, a tank full of human sharks eat each other alive. They NEED more placid-mannered people to bounce off of, and they are too stupid to realize they are chasing them away, and not only that, the more placid people have a MEANS to get away from them. I encourage people to work from home, or own their own business. The old business model of hundreds of people crammed into a building to make some trickle down b.s. work is asinine these days. WFH simply works, and it took a freaking pandemic for the world to realize it. Oops.

It depends on the job title and responsibilities, Andrew. Office workers who never face the public have no reason to return to the office, even on a regular basis. There are too many start-ups with cultures working remotely that will give many employees a choice. As a native NY who no longer lives in NY, the culture on Wall Street doesn't necessarily translate elsewhere, though why anyone would want to be a slave in a cubicle on the 40th floor of a skyscraper on Water Street is beyond me. Things will even change for the legal profession. Remember, the 2021 law school graduating class will have, in many cases, spent 50% of their time in law school in a remote setting. If they will be able to pass the bar in such a setting, it will speak volumes on their ability to practice law in a remote setting. Remember, most attornies don't spend an inordinate of time in court.

Glassman 153: I hear what you're saying about the legal field. The days of being a slave to the law library have been gone for a while. Thanks to WestLaw, lawyers, paralegals, etc. can sit at home and do their legal research on the internet and draft briefs and other papers on their word processors. Even trial attorneys can work this way. Of course, matters like witness interviews, conferences, hearings, trials, etc. still require appearances. That said, and as you note, those kind of activities do not entail an inordinate amount of time.

The work from home trend is here to stay. I think there is no chance most workers will be willing to go back to the office. Even if you want your workers to come back to an office location, there is a market for those workers. Other companies who offer them remote work options, will be more attractive and that is where workers will go. You can demand workers come back to an office all you want. The market will decide otherwise.

Then let people work from home so there’s less cars on the road, which helps with gas prices too. Also, if I need to work overtime, then I'm more likely to when I work at home; because I'm not thinking that I need to get home. I live in Colorado. Our winters are hit or miss with weather. No killing the environment. No $30-40k for a new car every few years. Time to exercise more. I eat better. Sleep better. Have more quality time with my spouse. Now being forced back into an office. My old job was only 10 minutes from home; that would have been better, but I hated that job. Point is...for a lot of people, it's the commute more than anything. We are now saving money in car insurance, gas, tolls, take out meals, car maintenance and sharing more time with the family. Although people is working for longer hours, I think it's a decent trade off, as at least you are in the comfort of your home. We are less exposed to traffic accidents and can buy decent houses and not ridiculously expensive shoe boxes of a home/condo. Companies are also saving by not paying the extra hours, no sick leaves, less cleaning services, utilities, etc. We now have to figure out the taxes. A hybrid model its the perfect setting that benefits both parties.

What about collaboration and work with intercontinental partners---for example many businesses in US do collaborations with European partners----it may not be possible to meet EU partners in office face-to-face as that will require overseas travel and may not be very cost-effective for week to week interactions---we used to do these over Cisco Webex before pandemic, and now with Zoom....so employees will now have to do zoom calls while seated in office? they can do them just as well from home--makes no difference. it saves costs associated with commute, gas (whose prices are probably going to rise over the next few months due to inflation !)

Depends on the job. Some jobs are much more productive collaborating as a team. Other call center and menial task jobs can be productive remotely. Bottom line; how a business functions is determined by ownership and upper management, not entitled underlings who are afraid of accountability. If an employee prefers to work at home, then that is their choice-find another job. If an employer wants people at the office, that is also their choice-find another employee.
