We see it every run. but how good a Pokemon is Cloyster when used by someone that isn't Lorelei? Want more solo runs but in Yellow? I stream afternoons at twitch.tv/Jrose11 Edited by: SimplyAJ ( / simplyaj )
Against Lorelei when the Confusion was healed in the code it applied the effects of having your status condition cleared. As a result, the temporary modification to your speed from the Paralysis was cleared. The game never checks if it is clearing the correct stat debuff since it never expects a Pokemon to have multiple status effects. Confusion being stackable with other status effects is an oversight in the code when it comes to this.
One day, I will learn about all the glitches in gen 1. Not today, not this decade...but one day. I swear, there's always some new headassery that code can produce XD
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 hey bud glad to see you here I requested this run since I knew it would SHOCK everyone here with how fast cloyster actually is It's very versatile too n can run mimic set
@@nautgamingnautgaming9949 Idk about shocking. It finished 7th with a lower level but he put it 4th somehow. I still don't think it's better than Nidoking or Starmie but we'll have to see at the end of May!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 he lost at least a minute or 2 attempting surge over n over again and possibly more by not beelining to rival2 ss Anne rival 3 out of the tunnel n last misty Then Celadon shop into rocket hideout into lavender rival into surge n then Erika Then we obviously do koga Blaine fivul Sabrina The riskiest strategy is Blaine early actually but this route would have been close to gengar I do agree with the Ranking since I saw way more human error than I saw in the average jrose11 run
jrose, i normally don’t comment too often but i just wanna thank you for doing all these fun challenges and keeping us entertained! keep up the good work!
14:47 "I don't even know if that [Self-Destruct] would've knocked me out at full health." Koga's level 43 Weezing has no DVs and IV of 9 in Attack, so the actual stat is of 90. At 13:43 your Cloyster had a Defense of 139. When using Self-Destruct, the damaged Pokémon has its defense halved. Plugging these in the damage formula: Damage = ((( (2*Level)/ 5 ) * Power * (Attack/ Defense)/ 50) + 2) * range Damage = ((( (2*43)/ 5 ) * 130 * (90/ 69)/ 50) + 2) * [0.85, 1] Damage = ( (86/5) * 130 * 1.39 )/ 50) + 2) * [0.85, 1] 39 to 46 HP of damage So, the answer is, no, Weezing's Self-Destruct would not have knocked out Cloyster if it was at full health, but it definitely would in the first battle.
When I was a kid, I always thought that getting your stats lowered made you stronger, maybe as some sort of intentional compensation mechanic. Later I figured that was just in my head, like pressing A to catch Pokemon. Now I know that I was actually right--the badge boost glitch really was raising my attack.
You should do a Persian run! The combination of STAB Slash and base 115 speed is going to dish out some digusting crits. And Persian only has Bubble Beam and Thunderbolt for coverage, so who knows? Strategies might develop. Worth seeing if the classy cat will do good or not.
It doesn’t learn Slash until level 51, so that’s only relevant for the endgame. Which to be fair is the hardest part of the game, but availability of tools is just as important as the tools themselves. Remember the Abra run?
The Water Gun TM can be found in Mt. Moon, so really only Brock and maybe Sabrina would be difficult. Persian crits often, so it could bypass Defence Curls *_by Brock (edited)_* and evasive moves Koga loves to use. Not sure about everything else, might try it myself on an emulator and see if its not just “Pray for crits and win.”
@@SadBirbHours Not entirely. Between Growl and Screech, the Onix can probably be subdued long enough to take it out with Bite. It'd be a battle of attrition, but not completely unmanageable.
@@jaynajuly2140 Yeah I think it might run into similar problems to Cloyster in the early-mid game unless its extra special is enough for Surge. Water Gunning Misty might also be annoying and you can't get TBolt until after that. But then you get TBolt/Ice Beam/Psychic in the midgame and the rest should be super free.
@@DabottIe of course, Misty might also barely attack it so there's at least a chance, and Starmie's high speed may give a couple of critical hits on Tackle! I agree that after those two the rest should be a breeze
I'm just waiting for an, "If it uses a bad move this turn, we'll be able to finish it in one-" (foe misses Leer) "-we win." (Jrose gets a Gen 1 miss) "…" (next turn, foe critical one-shots)
Starmie has a more shallow movepool lol since it cant run physical moves like cloyster can I do like it's speed and special though I do think it's lack of versatility and lack of base hp will be starmies downfall
@@nautgamingnautgaming9949 I mean, it can learn thunderbolt (dealing with lorelei and gyarados), psychic (bruno/agatha), surf (some of bruno/rival), and ice beam/blizzard (lance and venusaur). It's versatility in terms of typing is incredible, and alakazam managed great with a worse base attack stat. The most obvious special walls happen to have STABs that it already resists, and most of them have terrible physical bulk, so a 75 attack stat doesn't seem too bad. It even learns multiple solid ice and normal moves, so he has the option to juggle when to learn moves for specific encounters while not sacrificing that type for the rest of the run. EG, start E4 with psychic, reflect, surf and thunderbolt, using reflect to weaken some of Lorelei's bulkier mons' physical attacks and Lance's aerodactyl; replace psychic with blizzard after Agatha, and replace reflect with double-edge after Lance for the rival's alakazam, having used tri-attack for pre-E4 special walls and ice beams as necessary. Between reflect, great speed and special, and super effective attacks against almost everything, I think it'd probably either outspeed and one-shot or outlast any late game mon that really threatens it (dewgong might be tricky due to not having the opportunity to set up reflect on an earlier pokemon and having take down, but iirc it's hard coded to rest on turn 2 anyway? not sure what level starmie would need to be to one-shot it with thunderbolt). Early game, Misty might be a slog, and Surge is probably tricky what with starmie being weak to electric and having no super effective moves (or even good neutral moves, honestly; might be worth delaying that one even if it means backtracking without fly latter), but once he gets to Celadon he can make a beeline for ice beam and psychic, and then starmie has super effective moves against all the remaining gym leaders except Sabrina, for which he can use tri attack; base 75 attack isn't *that* bad against a combined hp/defence of 100, especially with a decent crit rate and psychic resistance. That said, I kinda hope Cloyster keeps its ranking; mah boi could use some more accolades
@@nautgamingnautgaming9949 Starmie learning Psychic and Thunderbolt is a huge advantage. In the end, you don't really need Physical moves. 75 Attack is also not bad at all if you MUST use a physical move. It also has Harden for the Badge Boost Glitch, which helps the aforementioned attack.
@@bryanc1772 but it should start with water gun AND tackle, if bulbapedia is right, so it should destroy brock easily and play a fair match against itself against misty
I'd be interested to see Mr Mime, but Electabuzz/Magmar/Jynx is the trio that are linked. So I'd be interested in that three-way comparison. Mr Mime, I'd be interested to see whether it's better than Hypno. Hypno being slower but with higher Special
The moment I got into competitive and pokemon showdown, Cloyster became my favorite pokemon in competitive. Shell smash, focus sash, rock blast and icicle spear with skill link and any unsuspecting opponent gets swept. Absolute legend
Except that is so common that Cloyster has no chance. Just like those Last Resort Sandstorm garbage strategies. Have something like a Lucario or other good Pokemon with priority moves and the strategy no longer works.
@@MediumDSpeaks At this point, who doesn't look at Cloyster and expect the setup, though? Coming from someone who is a bit of a Cloyster fan themselves.
@@FamilyTeamGaming people who literally do not know... that's what *UNSUSPECTING OPPONENT* means. It is SO fucking easy to forget once you know niche knowledge just how niche it really is, and that until you learned it in niche conditions, that you had no idea to even think that that rare information existed, so we often forget when we get new vocabulary words for example, that most people don't know the meaning when we use them, particularly in niche communities about specific interests that have internal terminology that everyone knows within the community but makes 0 sense otherwise. The Cloyster thing is just one example among every one of so many complex myriad strategies in all different playstyles and formats and generations of competitive single or VGC pokemon. Sure I know a lot about singles Gen 7 OU or early Gen 8, but put me in today and I won't know SHIT about whatever the current different strategies are despite EVERYONE who regularly plays knowing. But likewise, every year or so when I come back to pokemon I can reliably fuck people up with old strategies like cloister or breloom or whatever other goodies are in my AG teams that newer players of the current meta have never learned or completely forgotten. So, again, *UNSUSPECTING OPPONENTS*
Vids are great dude, love them. Pokémon is the one series I know in and out and I really enjoy trying to guess ahead at what tricks and strategies you'll use. It's a fun little game, sometimes I'm able to guess correctly and sometimes you come up with some wild trick or a brand new exploit that I never knew about beforehand.
jrose combines the purposefulness of a speedrun with the chilled out, why-the-hell-not quirkiness of challenge runs. Every pokemon is different and the strats are super fun to watch, particularly when he comes with one on the spot like the Emerald Ditto or Shuckle runs. It's really great.
Jrose I dunno if you'll read this but every night for over a year now I've listened to your videos because I struggle to fall asleep without some kind of noise. I appreciate your calm voice and lack of music or loud surprising noises and wanted to thank you for helping me sleep :)
I am sure I speak for all of your fans when I say we're thrilled that you are putting out videos more consistently. You are one of the few youtubers who still has passion in his voice and generally seems to enjoy what he does. Keep up the fantastic work man!
I can’t believe I’ve been watching your RBY runs since that first Magikarp video years back. You’ve become the only RU-vidr who’s videos I instantly click on when I see them. Keep it up. No matter how many hiatuses you take, I’ll always watch this channel
I feel having an editor is really helping out JRose a lot with stress and workload. Great job. Still waiting for 'How fast can you beat OR/AS with Mega Rayquaza actually'
Optimizing the cloyster run can take off quite a bit of time just because of how much was lost between second to 6th gym. And rushing to surf would probably help a lot too.
I'm surprised jrose knew about that mechanic cause I sure didn't Also I think paralysis underflowed with bad boost glitch because of a crit n caused the speed debuff not to happen
I just want to say that I'm really happy I found your channel. These videos are so therapeutic for me, and really enjoy all the gen 1 love. So thank you for making these! 👍
It wouldn’t be too great on Cloyster actually. The special attack boost would be canceled out by the special defense boost since special is one stat, so shell smash would be +2 speed and attack with defense down. Maybe you could get away with hyper beaming everything since it would basically be a swords dance but the defense drop would hurt
@@mussolini2525 I have no idea tbh. I thought it was one badge boost per move used but I could be wrong. I’m trying to think of a move in gen 1 that raised more than 1 stat to test it out on.
@@zentazym1 it's one per stat change I'm pretty sure; I know abilities that activate on stat change in newer gens activaste multiple times against moves that change multiple stats. This is why in competitive you always switch in your defiant and competitive mons into parting shot.
I really appreciate watching and rewatching these videos whenever new ones come out and occasionally learning something new about Pokemon. Thank you, I look forward to seeing more!
I love your videos and am very happy that “wait and see” is panning out. I have one piece of criticism for this video and possibly moving on- Do not reset when you freeze an opponent, every time you choose ice beam over surf on a neutral to both Pokémon is because you go for the freeze chance. I understand that Erica is a different case because super effective, but it is still an advantage for ice type Pokémon. Just like in other videos when you reset because of a lucky crit. How lucky is it when it comes from Jolteon or Mewtwo, or eventually electrode? Just my opinion. Love your videos keep making them!
i agree with the sentiment that gen 1 crits aren't truly "luck." they scale off of a stat that can be both trained and altered at will, meaning that the level of control the player has over causing them is high enough that I would consider it more strategy than luck. in electrodes case its not impossible to run into a situation where its crit chance is higher than the accuracy of some moves, but a move hitting would never be cause for reset in this kind of run.
@@Namingway248 it’s based off of base speed, not the speed stat value. So it can’t be altered. Still i agree that a crit shouldn’t call for a reset, but these are his vids and he wouldn’t be satisfied with a crit win if he was on the ropes and he thinks he could do it better.
You could effectively treat the freeze chance as another chance for a "critical hit" of sorts. With base 70 speed, Cloyster has a 13.67% chance of getting a critical hit on any move. With a 10% chance of freezing on ice beam, the probability of getting either a freeze or a critical hit on any ice beam is about 22.3%. This is about the same chance that a Pokemon with base 115 speed gets a critical hit on a move. Those odds aren't bad.
I don't feel like reseting when he gets a freeze is that big of a deal. He was able to beat Erika without a freeze anyway, and leaving a gym leader up to a 10% chance isn't really what Jrose likes to do.
@@Purple-Popcorntm I don’t think you’re wrong and the results aren’t that different, I just feel that freeze in solo runs are an advantage of using ice type attacks that should be factored in. Either way it’s not too big a difference
Everytime you battle Bruno, that damn song plays in my head, glad you finally acknowledged it! Interesting run, better than I thought Cloyster would do. Thanks for all these great videos Jrose, they make this old genwunner's heart happy :)
Glad to see Jrose is getting back into the habit of more frequent uploads. Of course, now I want to see a collab between Jrose and Scott's Thoughts. Randomly roll from a list of pokemon neither of you have solo'd before, and both of you have to race to see who can get the fastest run on in game time.
Exeggutor starts with just trash moves. It's barrage only I think. I've seen people do the run and it is basically closer to Abra. Starmie seems to be a bit slower than Mewtwo/Alakazam levels. It only has like...two slowdowns.
Between ice being my favorite type (I've just always been a winter person) and shellder/cloyster being my first ever shiny I have SUCH a soft spot for cloyster. This was a fun run to watch!
You’re like the John Madden of Pokémon runs. You have a way of getting your audience excited about the smallest deviations to the same game and the background music - perfect! Keep it up!
Jrose, thanks for all the content you've done since the first episode of this serie, I absolutely love watching every one of them. Keep up the great work!
Just when Easter couldn't get any better, one of my fav RU-vidr's blesses me with an upload! Thanks for all you do Jrose and happy Easter to all who celebrates it!
Also, I can tell that the video production and editing quality has gone up the last few videos, really great to see, even though the old ones are still great as well. Glad you finally got an editor to help you with these.
Dude you are literally playing on my phone all the time. Your content is so damn good. I love getting uploads when these come out because I know I am going to be fully entertained to the end. Your commentary is on another level. Keep it up man
I've found this channel recently and wow, I've found Gold, amusing challenges and I'm even learning about glitches that I have no idea of their existence. Very good job dude.
Hey, Love your videos. I have bad mental health problems from work and the pandemic (I work in health care) and every time I see a new video of yours I get insanely happy. Also, your rationale for the badge boost glitch makes perfect sense after playing this game to death as a kid. Your takes on the game are greatly appreciated as an adult.
God bless you and get well soon we appreciate the work you do in times like these for us as a world but remember to do things like therapy and talking with friends about everything going on. God loves you and is fighting for you and know that you’re an incredible person and are worth the world in His eyes. Watch out for yourself too and much love ❤️
Hey just wanna say thank you for getting us two vids out super quick in succession like you had said. I genuinely enjoy these. I like Pokémon in general but as you’ve said gen 1 has a certain nostalgic jankiness that just makes for a fun time to watch
Even before you said it at the end of the video I immediately noticed the work the new editor was putting in. The way they laid out Cloyster's stats at the beginning of the video was so clean! I can't wait to see what future runs look like.
34:45 maybe your speed was dropped by paralysis, but still boosted enough by badges to tie with Lapras? Or as the critical hit ignored stat changes, maybe it overwrote the debuff from paralysis? I dunno, just spitballing
When stats are changed in gen1 (I think at all, though it may just be because badge boost messed with speed too? Someone should test without the speed badge) it ignored the -Speed from paralysis
@@velvetbutterfly It would make more sense for it to be because of the badge boost, apparently a speed/attack boost of any kind removes the negative stat effects of paralysis/burn... Apparently in this case though it was related to confusion being lifted and removing the negative effects of paralysis for the turn, explained in more detail by another commenter
Thanks for doing these challenges man. They're fun to watch and no matter where in the series you always explain so everyone can understand it essentially.
Jrose I just want to say man Ive been following you for a few months now and I must say just between your fantastic narration, level ego, and brilliant approach you are one of my favorite things watch!
Ha, me too. I got back from the ER about an hour ago after experiencing anaphylaxis for the first time lol. I hope next weekend is a lot better for both of us
first minute and the editing inprovements are already so notorius and I love them, hope you continue doing runs and getting better at this (even if you already are one of the best content creators on this plataform)
When you outsped Lorelei's Lapras, a weird quirk of Gen 1 showed itself. The speed drop from Paralysis vanishes sometimes, but I can't quite recall the exact circumstances. You must have triggered one of them, though. This problem is well-documented and actually pretty relevant in competitive Gen 1.
Generally it's when you boost your own speed. I'm pretty sure stat drops are reapplied whenever the opponent modifies your stats, so maybe all the growls made his speed so low it underflowed?
Nah, it’s because Cloyster snapped out of confusion the turn before. Apparently the game only has one command for removing status effects and it doesn’t understand that confusion is stackable with things like burn and paralysis, so when confusion wears off by itself it also cures the stat drops of the aforementioned status conditions.
This run was so all over the place that it was actually entertaining and a nice change of pace over your usual highly calculated style. As always, can’t wait for the next one
We want butterfree! I can’t tell you how much I enjoy these videos… grew up playing these games over 20 years ago and I went and did a play through of pokemon yellow not too long ago just because of your videos!
So great to see you back uploading consistently :) I sincerely hope you have newfound motivation to post, so many of us love you and do need your fantastic videos to make our days better! I'm looking forward to seeing you use Starmie, it's my favorite pokemon and I hope so much it's going to end up top 3! Maybe even beat Mewtwo, who knows?
Love you and your channel man. I found your videos when i needed them most last year. So glad you are posting such quality content (hopefully at a consistent turn out too)
yay jrose vid, perfect timing. also have you considered doing these in a premiere? so people in chat can react “live”? love your stuff, dude. happy Easter and God bless.
I just found this series and this is great! I'd love to see a run with Tentacruel and possibly Hypno as I believe they may have potential to dethrone Mewtwo due to typing and available movepool at the right points of the game
26:42 Don’t the tail whips mean that you could go for _even more_ than six withdraws, since the tail whip brings your defense back down before it reaches the maximum?
I was gonna be like "Well, Cloyster isn't very good offensively until it gets Shell Smash" Then I remembered "Oh yeah, in gen 1, Withdraw works like Shell Smash"
I'm confused by the final placement. Mew, Zapdos, and Articuno all had lower times and did it at a lower level. Gyarados was one level lower but 2 minutes faster. That much similarity comes down to rng. but the top 6 are all clearly better.
For the Zapdos... it was the Brock fight and Bruno... yeah Zappy had trouble with Bruno. Moltres was most likely due to the fact that it had Fire Spin as the only move it could use until Fire Blast and Fly, but it did get Agility so we could abuse the glitch. Still that early game and having to rely on a 70% accurate attack to get much done hurt it in rankings as it added a ton of RNG to the mix. Articuno was the most solid of the three. It abused mimic and was tanky enough to abuse Amnesia and Recover. It bodied everything but Agatha... and that becomes a problem. Pokemon with purely special movesets need either Amnesia or the ability to abuse the Badge Boost Glitch to be able to make her consistent. The top of the top are pokemon that are attempting to do this at as close to MINIMUM battles as possible. Gyarados... couldn't... he actually needed to go back and grind. Jrose is also attempting to fix his human error of taking on a few battles a bit too early which cost him time. Done perfectly, I think Cloyster actually saves more than enough time to outspeed Mew by a minute. Hope this helps with the understanding.
"Cloyster is one hell of a beast. But someone on Mewtwo's level?" How about Snorlax? In gen1, he's one hell of a beast able to bolster an insane movepool, self boosting tricks, great attack, super resistant. It's slow but it's not a big deal for him as he has 160 base HP. If anyone can dethrone mewtwo I think it's him.
@@marcustulliuscicero5443 walled is a bit strong. Rest will help a lot, and headbutt is a 70-base STAB. It won’t be even close to Mewtwo, but it’s likely to be one of those Pokemon who just needs Rival 1A and a couple other trainers to handle Brock. Still, clearly not a chance. If every Pokémon outspeeds, snorlax will likely be in a tier with Slowpoke. Maybe Molteres or Poliwag. Good, but way off the best.
I knew Cloyster had the right stuff. How about it's brother Dewgong? No insane defense or Withdraw, but it has higher special, can learn Body Slam and starts with Headbutt, and you can always get the badge boosts from Mimic?
I disagree. It has a bunch of things going for it that makes it well suited for powering through Gen 1. Starting with Aurora Beam and Headbutt alone make it a monster in the early game.
What a amazing run. Cloyster is a really great pokemon, I knew that ice pokes were going to be good at solo runs, but holy moly I wasn't expecting that level of destruction.
Always love to see your videos! I'm really hopeful to see a Starmie run, I really think that it will put in a solid performance. Also, I think that you outsped Lapras while para'd because you got something like 10 or 11 badge boosts during that battle, which really amped your speed.
