Koopas have been a staple of Super Mario games since 1985, but how fast can you touch them in every mainline Mario game?

Hi there! I'm j0rts, and I like to explore mostly pointless things in video games while playing them in weird, unconventional ways.
Despite my name, this channel has nothing to do with jorts. In fact, I've never even worn a pair of jorts in my life. I just find the word fun to say... j o r t s.

Wait a minute, how did you not pause to note that in Super Mario World, if you go left, you can almost immediately touch a shell-free Koopa, and if you go right you can almost immediately touch a shell without a Koopa? We found that Koopa's missing shell!

6:14 Lakitus are technically Koopa variants. I know you said later in the video that you wanted normal Koopas when possible, but I'd still say they're a lot more closely related than Electro Koopas at least. lol

I never noticed how absent koopas are from 3D Mario games... did Reggie just conclude that they're too finicky? It's easy to accidentally cause a mess with koopas in the 2D games, maybe it's worse in 3D

@@ericriley1985 Reggie has been the head koopa implementer in all Mario games since Hotel Mario. He sits in the corner of the room while they're designing levels and yells at the devs when he wants to see a koopa on the screen

I think you should count super Mario 64 ds as a separate game, because enough changes are made that it can significantly change the result from the original game. I’m pretty sure the koopa you were originally looking for in super Mario 64 is there in the remake.

You know, I always wonder why koopas are so rare in the 3d game. Like sure there must be a lot of limitations when developing but why? There’s so much you could do with koopas.

Perhaps it has to do with shell kicking? In 3D, kicking a shell in the direction you want is way harder, so perhaps they reduced the amount of Koopas you encounter so that shell kicking doesn’t become tedious. Just guessing though.

@@pengil3 I thought that too, but I do like what they did in Mario 64 where you can surf on the shells. That suits 3D really well.

@@pengil3 Yes, game design wise this is probably the case, mario levels while seeming rather straight forwards are usually VERY instrincally designed to the smallest details from spawn time to enemy positioning. Designing a level in mind with a random projectile that goes anywhere depending on player input is a lot easier to make fun if the player has generally the option of pushing it left or right. But once you involve multiple dimensions you as the designer have to incorperate this feature or leave it out.

I remember the first time I played Mario Galaxy back when I was a teenager, I ragequit the game when I saw that the Koopas walked on 4 legs. I was a very big Koopa Troopa fan at the time... It's frankly quite embarrassing to think about. 💀

I had my most horrible video game rage ever with Super Mario Galaxy too: slinging the Wiimote around and almost destroying stuff in the living room … after repeatedly failing at the Bouldergeist Daredevil Challenge. SMG will _never_ come close to being my favorite Mario game.

For the record, in the Mario Sunshine segment, there is a shine on that lone island. A gold bird flies around the island and if you spray it with water for a bit, it'll give you a Shine Sprite.

What even fewer people know about SMB2 is that doki doki panic WAS developed as a Mario game, then because it was deemed too different, was reskinned and released as an unrelated title - before Nintendo deemed lost levels too hard for American audiences and re-reskinned DDP as a Mario game again.

You can touch a koopa much faster in SM64 by getting the chain chomp star, entering that star, and getting the koopa over by the goombas you tried first.

Koopas were actually originally going to be the first enemy in SMB, but the devs thought it was too hard of a first obstacle, so they created goombas.

we also later learned that doki doki panic started life as the real mario 2, but was then reskinned as another game because it was "too different for the japanese market", while it was reskinned BACK INTO mario 2 because the japanese mario 2 was "too similar for the western market" i miss iwata
