This REALLY works. In fact, it works so well that, as you said, you can get lightheaded. It works even better to watch and do it with someone else. A lot of the stress and fear comes from feeling alone and out of control with this problem. Thanks for the video!

Breathing exercise starts at 2:40 …..Thank you SO much for this simple yet effective video! Short story: I was at my then Drs office and a nurse was going to take my BP, I knew my heart rate was faster than normal because of the stress of being there, so I started taking some deep breaths to calm myself….she flat out told me “that’s going to raise your BP”…😟😑 Sadly I listened to her. Now, thanks to your video, I know better 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I saw one of your videos about the breathing technic from about 2 years ago, so I tried it. I checked bp first and it was 165 over 73. Then I did some breathing and it was 158 over 77. So I did more breathing and it went to 124 over 75. So I guess you just need to do the deep breathing for a while, maybe 5 minutes +, before checking the BP. I do have a habit of breathing rather shallow and even find myself holding my breath for short periods. Thanks for your help. Just so you know, chiropractors and naturopaths have done more for my health than any medical doctor.

It still amazes me how much you can lower your blood pressure just by taking a so minor amount of time of your day to breathe deeply. When I first heard about this, I thought I would barely get 5 -10 points. I can get easily 20 points off my blood pressure in 5 mins time. Amazing.

Similar to the Wim Hoff method, which I do - takes me exactly 14 minutes to do three sets, just as Wim shows. It's been a big benefit to my life - stronger lungs, more oxygen transfer, lowered BP, and a nice calm feeling!

I was doing Wim's sets as you described, with breath holding of 1 minute, then 2 minutes and finally 3 minutes at the end of set 3. Did it for a year and then unexpectedly had to have open heart surgery with triple bypass surgery. I'm convinced my lungs were in great shape for it. I don't do those anymore but do something similar to Dr Story's vid. Cheers!

Thank you so much Dr Story for your breathing video, I have been following for about a week now and today I thought I would put it to the test. I checked my blood pressure before and checked again after the video and I had gone from 126/85 to 116/75. I have never had such low reading before, my doctor has said if my diastolic doesn't go down to 80 he will put me on medication because of my age. I am 68 and my diastolic can sometimes go as high as 90 but I don't want to go on medication. I believe if I exercise regularly, eat healthy food and follow along with you every morning I should be fine. THANK YOU! I can't thank you enough.

I’ve tried a Tai Chi, Buku breathing method: 1st breath goes down and raises the stomach (like a coil spring: and/or a baby breathing); the second breath goes up into the upper chest area (like you do); and the third is a normal breath. In the nose and out of both mouth and nose (tongue on roof of mouth. It helped a little; but I’ll your method a try. You made an excellent case! I always suspected it was a key factor.

Adam, you might be a cyclist. I notice a water color painting over your shoulder of a rider cresting the climb of the Madonna del Ghisallo not far from the city of Como in northern Italy. I live in Italy and am a cyclist, I've done this climb several times, once just before the passage of the race called Giro della Lombardia. Even as a rider with 35 yrs of constant practice I've developed high blood pressure, despite my healthy life style, weight etc. After reading the book "Haywire Heart" I have begun to understand that a tremendous amount of intense exercise over decades can lead to cardiovascular issues, such as Afib, which I suffer with. As well as high blood pressure. Who could've guessed?! Thanks for your videos.

VAGUS NERVE is the parasympathetic nerves that slows down the heart rates and control the blood pressure . now SYMPATHETIC nervous system is the other that stimulates the heart for all emergency response (fright, flight, fear etc ) which causes palpitation and raises the blood pressure and same thing is done by ADRENALINE by your adrenaline gland from your adrenal medulla . DEEP BREATHING causes the palate pushed up and stimulates the vagus during yoga practice. same thing happens by messaging th e CAROTID ART NECK (CAROTID BODY ) which can control as quick response for atrial fibrillation (now uses a electric vibrator in USA) in INDIA emergency practice. carotid message needs a practice for a doctor because in USA medical practice is all part by part. hence a gp (primary care physician ) forgets how to do it as EKG reading done by paramedics than a doctor ! so it's good to see ADAM is giving a practical yoga breathing exercise for the general public to BENEFIT FROM THIS PRACTICE. THANKS ADAM !

A physician once reported that those studying to be physicians are required to study physics. Yet physics don't seem to penetrate medical thinking. There are at least 3 categories of blood pumps in the human body. Several years ago medical science admitted that calf muscles act as auxiliary blood pumps while a person is walking or running. Thus, the heart rests more while a person walks rather than while the person sits. The principle function of the heart is to REGULATE THE DIRECTION OF BLOOD FLOW. But if one actually THINKS in terms of physics, the most powerful blood pump is the diaphragm/lungs combo. When the diaphragm draws air into the lungs, the lung expansion mechanically forces blood away from the lungs. The blood will try to go in every direction. (The heart then regulates what directions it allows the flow.). But the lungs apply actual physical pressure to all the arteries and veins in the chest. When the diaphragm pushes air out of the lungs, blood is sucked back into the lungs (The heart controls where the blood is NOT allowed to be pulled away from.) When a person breathes shallowly, more blood accumulates in the area above the waist and below the neck because the blood flow only has a particular amount of vigor. However, when the person breathes deeply on purpose or while exercising, the diaphragm/lungs pump very vigorously and increase the blood supply to the brain and increase the blood supply to the feet. The principle FORCE in the circulatory physics comes from the diaphragm/lungs combo. Breathing deeply results in blood bring reduced in the trunk and increased in particular in the legs. By moving more blood to the legs through deep breathing, the amount of blood in the arms is reduced. The distributing more blood to the legs distributes less blood to the arms. Thus, the blood pressure in the arms goes down, and the blood pressure in the legs increases. This can be tested. Breathing shallowly, take blood pressure at the ankles and the arm. Sustain the deep breathing for a period of time. Take the blood pressure at the ankles and the arn. One ankle might have a different reading than the other, depending on how much blood has gotten moved. It is rather likely that without gravity not much blood would reach the feet. The heart function does guarantee a certain minimum blood supply to extremities. Deep breathing is like sending big waves of blood through the circulatory system. Shallow breathing primarily supplies blood to the internal organs. I took biopsychology at UCLA. LOTS of parasympathetic functions can be consciously controlled, if one bothers to practice controlling those functions. My 14 years of university study, including 3 graduate degrees, taught me different 'facts' than medical school teaches. There definitely are other cultures that have VERY different attitudes toward breathing than does the USA. Cardiologists don't much want the extra work of treating the diaphragm/lungs to improve circulation health. However, dismissing the lungs as merely being oxygen exchange sponges is in error. The lungs are also bellows. There is a backwards and forwards movement in the veins and the arteries. There has to be because when the lungs expand and squeeze the walls of the veins and arteries, the blood is compelled to move anyway it can. Logically, shallow breathing creates less challenge to the heart valves. Deep breathing would challenge the heart valves by increasing the vigor of the push and the pull of the blood against the valves and out of and into the lungs. I believe the heart is taught as being almost all muscle, so there ought to be a range of pressure that should strengthen the heart valves and a range of pressure that will weaken them. Personally, I am NOT convinced that blood pressure regulating chemicals allow adequate blood supply to the brain. Maybe medicine has to rework its analysis of blood pressure to allow people to keep more of their toes and more of their mind by not prioritizing the heart so completely over the oxygen needs of other body parts. Industrialized nations also discourage reclining except for sleeping. Ancient people reclined much more than moderns do. I don't know about the relative value of your format. Eye minded viewers might be distracted by the Socratic method you use of lecturing while you walk. I found my attention drawn to studying the place rather than processing the words. However, the more important words seemed to be delivered while you were seated. Do I am commenting for the alogrithm and maybe stirring up some additional comments for you. But I am not 👎 or 👍 because I agree with you that deep breathing is beneficial, but we might disagree about why. I believe deep breathing in and of itself increases circulation. Anyway, best of luck and good health and prosperity in your career.

Thank you so much, Dr Story, for your advice on breathing and foods. Was not feeling good and checked my BP on my late husband's monitor. T.he systolic had reached 180, which was when I lookef for and found your Ytube commentary. I had not seen the Dr and was not on medication. When he saw me today, it was 119. I told him about the beetroot and the spinach. He was very pleased --- called me Popeye!

Using your breathing technique since July 3rd! An interesting out-growth of your technique has been a feeling of a slight rise in my temperature. After 1 round of 30 breaths, I step into a COLD shower for 4 minutes! A GREAT beginning of my day! Purchasing a blood pressure monitor on Aug. 3rd. Will keep you posted on my progress.

@@paulnice100 Check Dr. Story's video on his breathing technique. In thru the nose: expanding the chest, massively! Exhale thru the mouth: exhaling out all the air, leaning forward slightly, massively! 30 REPS! This creates slight dizziness and tingling of the fingers and toes also, this creates a perceptible slight rise in body temperature. When I step in the shower, to prepare for cold water, the shock is somewhat reduced. I monitor my 4 minutes under a cold water shower by the sweep hand on my watch!

I had to laugh because I just watched your other video on this and I was like...if I do this everyday for the rest of my life I will get off this low dose medicine. Then I get to this video and you were like NOPE! LOLOLOL I'm actually doing other things like eating healthier and getting back to exercising to make sure I don't stay on this medicine. Its been 10months up until then I had "text book" normal BP. But the stress of last years start with both parents in the hospital at the same time for a month, working 2 jobs and only getting ~4hours of sleep per day for over 2 yrs has taken its toll. And my BP is only slightly elevated but my doc doesn't want it to get higher so I got on the medicine while I work on getting back to my former healthy lifestyle. All this to say, I appreciate these videos and the technique you are sharing and I cant wait to do this daily!!!! And see how it helps along with everything else I am doing.

This works for if I do it twice in a row and then take my blood pressure. It lower my pressure. Presently I don’t do the breathing every day but I will try it daily to see if I don’t have do the deep breathing twice for it to lower my pressure to normal, 123/80. Thank you for your video.
