I pushed around half ton newspaper bailers for the Globe in my twenties to pay for my own education at night school. I didn't miss one day of work and took every shift I could get. When the newspaper guild got outsourced the year I started learning about it I applied for the apprenticeship. I had to wait 4 years to get called. Almost didn't think I would ever hear from them. I worked my hands to the bone for dozens of shops, some appreciated me some only cared about who I knew or who I didn't know. The first 3 years were very good hard honest work. The last couple years became a free for all. They would constantly tell us the school was not the same as the hall. You don't qualify for what the hall offers until you graduate from the school. I had no health insurance. Cobra pay sucked and pisses off to this day. Pro tip, don't get used up by those who will deny you were ever there. SAVE YOUR PAY STUBS AS EVIDENCE! If they miss giving you a paycheck call the school and show up at the shops office refusing to leave until they hand you what you earned. I guess I am still a bit jaded by some of the bs. Careful who you put your life on the line for. You expect a license carrier to protect life and property but some of those guys were so crazy you wouldn't believe the things I saw during some of the hazing that happened. Hahahaha ok I'm done commenting. Still grinds my gears tho!

I just got my score back from my interview, they said anywhere from now til 2 years i will get chosen hopefully soon since i told them i have close to 2 years experience

You can always reinterview to get a better placement on the list, but I would also keep contact with them to show you're serious, good luck!

Go to an open shop if you need money. You can test for Jman in 4 years instead of 5.

just did my interview for the inside wireman and construction wireman apprenticeship at RJATC with 666 in Richmond, I start as a electrical helper this tuesday until i learn if i got in or not

The process for local 48 here in Portland has been super fast! I got results from my aptitude test the same day. I have my interview in two weeks!

applied for the jatc in albany ny , 25 looking to get out of the auto industry wanted to get my lineman certificate after i graduated in 2014 but the college i was gonna go to had a 2 yr wait list so i said screw guess that is not for me

Working to get into local 3 here in nyc and it’s harddddd. Basically they’re not taking any applications I had to write them a letter with my contact info and wait to see if I hear back. Meanwhile I been working in the field on the weekends for like a good few months now and even tho I still suck I know what most of the names of things are and how to do cable work and then how to do finish connecting the outlets/switches etc.. but not a lot of hands on work as I’m just a helper. I bought my own tools and all that stuff. Anyways I’m not giving up but for some reason it’s hard to get in these days. Btw I’m doing residential work only and it’s what I’m trying to join for. I’m mad I didn’t get in sooner straight out of highschool I’m 25 now

Don't be mad man, things are just a little weird right now, I just started working again I was off for almost 5 months, if things start picking up locals will start opening up.

up north is TOUGH for a long time you had to be a neighbor, son, nephew or some how connected to get in. down south is easier to get in and transfer after a while

also. I started at 28 some guys are in their 30's and we have a guy in his 50's. the experience you're getting now will put you ahead should you get it. so keep at it brotha

i hear you bro, i just had my interview with local 3, almost 2 weeks ago, haven't heard anything back yet, you got any insight on what/when they get back to applicants? Also, do you know if local 3 does reinterviews?

Im a 3 year college student for Finance and Supply Chain Management. Currently work as Logistics and Quality Control for an electronic components company. I’ve realized that I hate desk jobs and even tho I like school and learning I cannot work in an office. I want to plan and do this for sure. Im in Florida, I think we have those options here as well. Which specialization would you say is easier on your body as an apprentice? Also what state are you in? I have no idea what the pay is. Currently I make about 19 hourly but again I hate the desk lol

I hear you! I worked an office job before I was an apprentice and I hated it as well!!! Now if you head over to Reddit and go to the IBEW sub you could 100% get accurate answers there but I will do my best. I looked up local 349, which is out of Miami and it looks like a 1st year starts at about $19 an hour but I don't think this is official numbers. For my local they have residential and commercial broken apart but in a local near you, you may just have them combined. Personally commercial is easier on your body imo because it's more relaxed but you do have to lift more heavy things and there is more "danger" to commercial as you are dealing with higher voltages, more industrial equipment and so on. Residential is more fast and more just go, go, go, go pace but you aren't lifting as much so I guess there's a flip side to each. I am in Michigan, so our scale is different but if you have any more questions let me know, or like I said the IBEW subreddit will be more than happy to help you with questions, I am on there often, whichever path you chose I hope you enjoy it! @@ElectricDad 349 first year rate is about $19. they only care about the contractors though. they will work you to the bone and don't let you know the agreement and the contractors take full advantage of that. if you get with a good shop or journeyman you'll be alright for a while though

What's the difference between residential and inside? Also, does the union pay different depending on which one you choose?

Residential = housing, condos, apartments things like this Commercial = Office building, restaurants basically everything that isn't housing of some sort even though dorms are usually considered commercial. Depending on the local, some locals don't split up residential and commercial, my local does and commercial pays a decent amount more generally.

What should I say during the interview when they ask if I’m afraid of heights? I’m a bit scared with heights but I’m willing to step out of my comfort zone for the job. If I say I’m scared I’m guessing they won’t hire me.

Honestly I wasn't a fan of heights either, still not that's something you will probably have to face when/if you get in and build up to. After a little bit you just don't think about the heights anymore since you're on a big platform. I don't think it will come up but if it does I would say exactly what you just said, not a fan but willing to step out of my comfort zone.

I got accepted by IBEW but rejected them. I now make 2x as much money as my union counterparts.😎

@@ElectricDad thanks, owning my own tools definitely helped me get there. Almost 20 years ago I got laid off from a lumber mill and got retrained into a new career. I went to night classes at Bates tech in Tacoma WA. Unfortunately the instructors where with the IBEW and they refused to teach. Every night they would come to class put their feet up on the desk and say "join the union it's the best you can do" I hate them for this. I got accepted into the union but at last minute went my own way. Hated the union ever since. They tried to rip me off my education.
