thanks Rick, me too, it's like a box of chocolates you never really know what you're gonna get till you bite into the center and reveal the art within.

I love fossil walrus ivory and all the different colors it can have, especially when it has rich browns and caramels and creams. I really like the small patches of blue of this one, especially with this convexed fluting, it just looks so nice and "fluffy" like a pillow made of clouds with small breaks of blue sky peaking through lol. Beautiful work, Kyle! I'm just curious, but when do you think you'll be making your next Bowie or hunter style knife? It seems all the people coming up on your list wants one of you beautiful daggers (I can't blame them lol) , that you haven't been "able" to make much else. Not a bad thing! I'm just curious is all. Also, do the clients on your (no doubt, very long) waiting list get to choose whatever type of knife they want along with its color/material theme (I.e. mono steel or Damascus, hot blued fittings or stainless, wood or ivory or micarta and so on), or how much of that is usually left up to you? Is it usually just them asking for either a dagger, Bowie, or a hunter etc. and then giving you free rein and artistic license over everything else, or? I know it's different for each maker, but I always find some of the less obvious sides of knifemaking very interesting. Thanks as always for sharing :)

Man it sounds like you get that you understand the art aspect. I just started a bowie Saturday, I decided to squeeze it in for the Little Rock Arkansas Show next weekend. Josh will be filming it with his new camera (he loves that thing). I have different clients some say I want a bowie and I make whatever I want others want to co-create the piece and have a lot of input. If it's a custom order I let them guide the way they want the build to go. After emails back and forth I sketch up what we agree on in writing then send it to them and they approve of sketch then I begin the build. Lately I have customers send a photo of a previous knife and say I want that one. I only like to make one-of-a-kind pieces so I mixed them all up a bit. Great questions!

Thank you Kyle, I'm making a kind of hybrid Bradyized Japanese Smoked Brisket/ Sushi knife for my 36 yr. Old step son and his wife. I've been in his life for 28 years and many of those were very rough we are good now. This knife I'm making is the most important thing that I can ever think of making for him to let him know what he means to me. I have plans to make a matching set for the both of them, but this one is just for him, and completely different than the set of kitchen knives. I am using 1084 for the blade, it will be 15"x2". I'd like to try my hand at tri color Mokume Gane for the embellishments. My question is: I'm sure I can not afford Ivory to attempt that beautiful work like you do. Do you recommend a particular wood? Should it be stabilized or not? Are you familiar with Makume Gane? I'm trying to learn more about it but cant find much. And where in the world do you purchase your little engraving type tools. You'll always be my hero kid, well adult kid. I'm 55 so your a kid to me. I'm never going to be as good as you, but I'm going to strive to walk in your shadow. Thank you Best to the Family

Im sure Kyle will have a more in-depth answer than me but i would try some African Blackwood or ironwood they are both naturally stable and very strong woods. there are plenty of others though. ive made some mokume gane and it is one of those things that can be super easy or super difficult. James Binnion makes some insane mokume i would look him up on IG. Good luck making knives man. welcome to the craft!!

Obviously It didn’t happen this time but have you had that buffer catch one of your handles slam it into the wall and then spend the next day and a half crying?

Yes but not the wall, the concrete floor!

Hi Kyle, I have a big question that I have about a knife I am currently making for my step-son would it be better for me to email the address on your website or leave a long comment? It pertains to this video. Thanks, Brady
