I'll have to try this as I have a rider and farm tractor that needs a seat. But one of those is really bad, missing a big chunk of foam. So this got me thinking to try expanding spray foam to fill the gap, then trim out that over spray. Then I'll do the duct tape and plastidip as shown. Thanks much for the tip.
@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight 4 года назад
Just be aware that although spray foam will definitely fill all the space - it may not be that comfortable to sit on. Maybe get some regular cushion style foam from the craft store and cut it as close as you can to the shape needed, then let the tape and plastidip cover the rest.

If you have any big chunks missing you might try filling them with spray foam and then covering that to fill the void.
@jafinch78

Keep us posted. Reads like directly into the foam with a few layers lasts for years in the last video I watched regarding. The gentleman didn't use tape... and used the yellow. I'm thinking I might custom make a Ford seat with the blue since looks close enough. I'll test with a repair seat first before I try to coat a whole seat thought. Thinking can trim some space foam maybe or similar foam and glue with the plasti dip also to fill in any voids if needed. Would be nice to get a space or cool gel foam layer under somehow. I also received some Silicone Oil to test with Type 2 Silicone as I am wondering how performs to thin and set. Then I'll try a dye also as that was my original plan to test to make a Ford blue seat. Thanks for sharing!
@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight 4 года назад
Sounds like a cool project- if you do try all that report back and let use know! Also if you want yo coat the whole seat blue look online for the aerosol version in the color you’d like- might work better for larger coverage, although it will take 5/6 coats. Check out the channel Dip Your Car for more plastidip diy how tos!

@@GanderFlight Repairs worked excellent. Two seats on lawn riders I leave outside also. I just repaired the latest investment, a Craftsman that seems to have similar parts to the Poulan Pro other then the engine, hydro and deck along with those specific related parts. Anywho... for the Craftsman, I wound up trimming some foam to fill in the cracks since I remembered to this time. Seems to be doing well other than I'm using the same can of PlastiDip and definitely thickened up even with saran wrap under the lid. Didn't apply as smooth to look so great, though good enough and I'm more worried about performance and my seat not wet. facebook.com/james.analytic/posts/4247637905297979 The Type 2 Silicone thinned with Silicone Oil test was basically a failure compared to the thinned with Mineral Spirits. Reads like cures with the Type 1 Silicone. Thinking I can add additional plys on the inside of tires with the silicone however not thinned and also using PlastiDip. Thinking I'm going to try impregnating the Kevlar material, that I have from some Kelvar Arm Sleeves, withe Type 2 Silicone since I have a bunch of and need to use before expires. Thinking the PlastiDip will work great also and most likely be tougher. Figure the Craftsman tires are going to be my candidates to test the method. In regards to the Ford seat; I'm sure will work great, though thinking I'm not going to get to this season.

@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight Год назад
I gifted that mower to a friend and its lived outside - held up decently for all the weather exposure. What I 'd do differently -- I'd still sew it up, but then Id get some big gap spray foam and fill the void. Once that was cured I'd trim it to the shape I want and then put the plastidip or flex seal over the top.

Have you given any thought to using a waterproofing membrane such as Vycor, typically used in construction for roof and windows, as a substrate over duct tape? Has a rubber like feel, self adhesive, and a higher mil thickness. Just curious, working on a tractor seat repair now, and need to span some cracks..
@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight 10 месяцев назад
I haven't. The plastidip is pretty well waterproof if covered wide enough. I would however put some spray foam or other material into the gaps before sealing it.
@marypetrino2011

Would you use this technique to repair torn vinyl seat cover in a car?
@GanderFlight

I haven't tried it - but give it a go! If it doesn't work I don't see the plastidip damaging anything since its semi-permanent!

Why not use fiberglass cloth instead of tape. Put a coat of dip and while wet put cloth on then add additional dip as needed. That way the tape does not release over time.

I wonder if using spray foam under the duct tape, to fill the missing foam, then removing the duct tape after the spray foam has cured, then plasti-dipping would have worked? Might not have ended up with the appearance of the duct tape under the plasti-dip.
@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight 2 года назад
If I were to do this again I definitely would have used spray form or even pieces of regular foam to fill in the gap and then covered.

Not finished watching, but you think fishing line would make a difference in the stitching?
@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight 3 года назад
I would think that would work well too. Ive since also tried using spray foam and I’d definitely do that again. Stitching up the seams and then jet in some spray foam and cover with plastidip would make a great repair.

@@GanderFlight It depends where. On the back where you did it, probably ok. Mine is torn where you get on and off, and this is not a good solution for that. The plastidip curls as you slide across it, losing more and more each time. I know because I tried this on my Kubota. The seat is a high back that is over $300, so I'm trying to save it.

I was loving this until you resorted to putting duck tape back on. That won't last. The glue under the duct tape will end up a gooey mess just like the one you cleaned off. Only this time it will be buried under plasticoat. Might look good this summer....

Plastidip - you can find it at the hardware store. Comes in the open can type and also in a aerosol can.
@eddielane9569
@eddielane9569 3 года назад
It would have been better if you would have continued to seal the void with the plastic dip until it had been filled in instead of putting on the duct tape because the duct tape will eventually pull loose and then you will be stuck having to do it all over again.
@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight 3 года назад
That would have been a TON of plastidip to fill the voids. If I were to do it again I might fill the voids with hunks of upholstery foam or even try spray foam although that would definitely be firmer.

*Removed duct tape, attempted repair, failed, put on more duct tape, tried to save face by disguising duct tape* Sorry but this seems like a total waste of time. If you were going for aesthetics it didn't work out. As far as functionality, the owners original repair would have done just fine. Cover it with couple strips of tape and put the seat cover on.
