Join flower farmer and florist Georgie Newbery of Common Farm Flowers as she sets up her dahlia tubers to sprout. Snow forecast but she carries on regardless as her Flower Farmer's Year pushes on whatever the weather. With lots of tips and tricks this is a great clip for practical ideas for propagating dahlias as well as managing greenhouse and poly tunnel space when a cold snap is forecast.
Georgie offers a special dahlia workshop both at the farm when the dahlias are in full flower - you can find out more about that on the website here www.commonfarmflowers.com/col...
Georgie also offers an online dahlia workshop, which you can access from around the world. The recording of the most recent workshop is available to buy until 22nd March 2023 or you might be interested in booking onto the next online session in November 2023. www.commonfarmflowers.com/col...
If you're booking a place on our workshops or demos the website will ask you to choose a delivery date - any date will do! And if you can't join our sessions live then you are still very welcome to book as we send the recording and notes of the workshop out to everyone afterwards, so you can download the session and refer back to it as and when you need to.

It has been so wonderful here in North Alabama zone 7b. We have had an early spring and I am so scared we are going to have a freeze. I have already been gathering up everything I need to protect my plants just in case. I am so glad we can leave dahlias in the ground here with protection. I don't think my back could handle digging them up every year. God bless Georgie

I love the rhythm of propagating but certainly understand the lure of leaving them in the ground x

I'm amazed that your lifted dahlias look so healthy, just piled in baskets. In Surrey I put in slightly dampened vermiculite but found quite a few had rotted. Mind you I had to lift in late November when it was still very damp and mild, no frost.

They keep well the way I do it - I avoid vermiculite, newspaper, anything other than the earth they are lifted in. I think v worth making sure plenty of air circulation.

Can't wait to watch the Live at 5. I'll have to change my alarm on my calendar because I had it for Wed. I to am looking to do flower farming when I retire which I have a few more years because I'm only 56. I want to get things established by buying things while I'm still working that will make certain tasks easier as I get older. I also am trying to get perennials established before that time. I know that you talk about the shrubs and trees that you put in your arrangements but have you ever considered talking just about them on a video by themselves? 🌱😊

Funnily enough I have a full perennials for cutting workshop coming up later this spring which might be helpful for you Martha. xxx

Today was D-day (dahlia day) for me, too. I had to laugh at your Barbara Woodhouse instruction to Teacake. 😉 X

lol - hope you didn't freeze too hard last night? I woke up at 2am and nearly went out to the greenhouse to check but all ok - an inch of snow but not frozen x

Thanks Georgie a fabulous clip and great food for thought at the end . I am more of a hobby grower who sells a few bunches in the summer. I work full time in financial services but want to do more when I partially and then fully retire. Have you thought about a flower farming for retirees course? Do you cover saving for retirement on your main workshops ? Looking forward to tomorrow.

Great video! How do you keep the ink on your labels from rubbing off when you are sprinkling water on them? Are they paper labels or coated to protect the writing?
@theflowerfarmer
@theflowerfarmer Год назад
A good thick sharpie on good thick Kraft labels lasts just long enough for the job x

This was so helpful. Will you plant out the tubers after you take cuttings or only plant out your cuttings?
@theflowerfarmer

Depends how many rooted cuttings I get x

where are you located what is your zone?
@theflowerfarmer
@theflowerfarmer Год назад
south west UK - Somerset - zone 8 - though we have long slow springs and long slow autumns - I don't love the zoning system as I think it's too much of a blunt hammer when micro climates can be created by a small hill or flat land to a sea a hundred miles away x

@@theflowerfarmer I understand but from Zone 4 in Quebec to 8 in UK big difference
