How are the Mariners top 5 in both the draft and international WAR acquisition, and yet here I am staring down a potential 21st straight year without the playoffs and 0 World Series appearances?
@BaseballsNotDead
@BaseballsNotDead Год назад
Mariners were extremely top heavy on these lists (think like the 2022 Angels with Trout and Ohtani but still being terrible). Guys like Griffey, ARod, David Ortiz, and Felix Hernandez give them huge boosts.
@tomf5823
@tomf5823 Год назад
@@BaseballsNotDead bad examples besides felix. ortiz never played for them and they were actually good and made the playoffs several times with arod and griffey. mariners were not terrible with arod and griffey the way the angels have been with trout and ohtani.

@@tomf5823They don't have to have played for the team. It just measures career WAR and the team that drafted or signed them. Seattle has drafted and signed some pretty good players over the years, even if they only developed elsewhere (like Ortiz, Varitek and Derek Lowe).
@tomf5823
@tomf5823 9 месяцев назад
@@TigerofRobare right i understand that. i was responding to the comment about not making the playoffs for 20ish years. If you draft or sign an international free agent who has a good or even Hall of Fame career like Ortiz but gave him away for nothing he's not helping you. And basically for 20 or so years besides Felix Hernandez they hadn't developed and kept anyone good.

It's a bit misleading when it says draft vs. international amatures, since it's only the first round of the draft. I would guess that first round players are less than half of the total WAR of all draftees.

As someone from Latin America I am against the regulations in the international market. It hurts our players, because a lot of those guys came from poor origins and those high contracts were a way to secure money even if they didn't make the MLB. The cons of adding more controls to the market in the sake of parity will end hurting poor people. MLB teams are mega rich so I don't see the problem of them spending a lot for international talents. We should be happy rather than angry that some teams were able to risk and invest money for the sake of becoming better. More money spent on players equals better salaries and better jobs. Baseball's biggest problem is actually the opposite. We have teams like the Oakland that don't want to spend. We should celebrate that there are teams like the Dodgers or the Yankees that want to spend plenty of money in the market rather than asking for punishment just for the sake of na artificial parity.
@Nick_2i
@Nick_2i Год назад
The issue is that without artificial parity, small market teams cannot function. No teams will ever be able to compete with NY and LA in terms of cash, but NY and LA cant just play each other 100+ times every season. They need milwaukee and other small market teams to survive. Allowing teams to go crazy with international spending helps poor people in the short term, but severely hurts them in the long term if the MLB is insolvent. The best way to combat this (IMO) is a solid revenue sharing system that allows poorer teams to have a bit more money to spend on player salaries.
@Mikhail-Stark
@Mikhail-Stark Год назад
@@Nick_2i The Cardinals are a team from a "poor" city without the number population of bigger cities, but they can compete many years in regular season to reach playoffs. The Cardinals are the second most winning WS team of all time. Also, as big as big market teams are compared to small market ones, the difference between them isn't big enough to excuse the Brewers for having 18 times less WAR from internation talents than the Dodgers. It speaks more about how bad the Brewers did and how incompetent they were in those years. Yes, big market teams have an advantage, but we can not ignore that some small market teams are in part culprit for being incompetent. Yes, I know that the Cardinals are an expection that can be one of the richest teams despite being from a small market, but I think that there are other examples about small amd medium market teams doing a job good enough to be more competitive. The youtuber from this video is a Brewers fan and there is a clear bias, because the evidence shows that the Brewers did a bad job even for the standard of their size. I agree that the league should do a better job in giving money in a more equal way to teams, but let it not pretend that all the small market teams are victims.
@Nick_2i
@Nick_2i Год назад
@@Mikhail-Stark Trust me I dont feel sorry for the teams who are "only" worth a billion dollars, and i agree that the brewers are entirely to blame for their problems Still, the Yankees are worth 7 times as much as the marlins. That is a gigantic gap between the high and low value teams. The cardinals are also an old team with a VERY widespread fanbase. I grew up near Chicago, and I was surrounded by a lot more Cardinals fans than even Sox fans. The only way to get teams like the Marlins and the A's to spend big money is to revenue share and have an inforced salary cap floor like there is in the NFL
@SuperGalaxy
@SuperGalaxy 11 месяцев назад
@@Nick_2i there is a revenue sharing system already, and most of the teams that are part of it just pocket the money instead of using it on free agency.
