Are you spending too long painting each mini? In this video I dive into the tradeoff between quality and quantity as it applies to painting warhammer or DnD minis. Let's figure out where we are on this continuum, and if maybe we belong a notch or two in either direction!

There is never too long to paint a mini I could sit perfecting blends until my hair is as long and luscious as Brent's. Edit: Why Brent is the mini painting Bob Ross 1. A great hairstyle that makes them recognizable 2. Calm informative tutorials that help the viewer relax with their soothing voices 3. Wholesome animal moments whether it is cats or Bob's baby squirrels 4. Good at what they do and can do it quickly 5. Settles for imperfection 6. Just nice people 7. They both give good advice that helps others learn

I started measuring my time for my 40k Harlequin army and it takes me around 3-5 hours per model. I once sat down with my friends for a Discord paint session and while I was busy just getting the base coat right they were finishing full batches. It was a bit disheartening to say the least. I think when it comes down to the question how much time you should invest in your minis you need to distinguish whether you want good looking models or a painted army. Because even though I have one of the most elite, low count army in the game, I'm beginning to get tired of painting the same paint scheme over and over again. I couldn't fathom painting 120 guardsmen to the same standard. I'm definitely not the type to sacrifice on quality though. After all I take big joy from the feeling of accomplishment of watching my minis on the shelf. So one lesson I take from this is to focus on small skimish type games for my next project or on single models entirely.

But I only work on it 1 maybe two hours every other day or so. I have the time, just not the focus or motivation. Your comments in the first of the video reminded me I am not the only one that spends as much time as I do. I don't have to feel guilty I am not pumping out quantity. I used to be overly obsessed with trying to get stuff done and my old armies unanimously wound up hideous and I didn't like it. then I got so burnt out on the cycle of obsessing and hating the finished product that I stopped painting and became a lowly "Tin boy", which I also really didn't like. Now, I relegate myself to painting as best I can so I can be proud of the finished models and just keep a minimum of 1-2 hrs of painting a day and for me I found that wasn't fast, but satisfying (and also exhausting when you choose to have Space Orks and Imperial Guard as your two main armies. Yikes, haha)

I love finding shortcuts. Painting hordes of skeletons the same way I paint space marines is painful, but at first I didn't realize that the slog wasn't a result of the models, but rather my approach. So now, instead of doing the whole prime, basecoat, layer, wash, highlight routine, I just spray them with off white, put a heavy wash on them or use Contrast paint and drybush them. Good looking skeletons, without the sanity shredding boredom!

This video popped up at just the right time. Next week I start a new project. Painting a Drunagor all-in set, with a goal of 15 minutes per mini average, or all 150ish in under 40 hours. The plan is 3-tone zenithal (black/bone or grey/white) > assembly line, mass Speedpaints basecoats > drybrush highlights > mass quick spray varnish (maybe) > wash and/or extra touchups > final mass varnish > done EDIT:90 minutes to 2 hours to get a base coat you were happy with... eeesh. Normally if a mini takes me more than 90 minutes to fully complete I'm angry about how much time I'm wasting on it.

This video paired well with one of Miniac's latest videos about changing his painting process so he could enjoy painting more and have more fun. At the end of the day for the majority of the people in the hobby that's probably the most important thing. Just also important to realize that challenging yourself, while sometimes scary, can be really fun too! Also while I'm sure there's more to be done on all the models you painted, I thought all the faces on the human characters looked good, and really elevates the model.

Great video. Myself, like many I believe, started with $150 GW boxed games of 50 miniatures. This was so overwhelming because I also started by trying to match the box art. This left me playing the game for 1-2 years with mostly grey plastic or even worse, never playing the game for 2 years while I fell in and out of the struggle of painting everything in the box before I ever played the game. (eventually finding out that I had put 100's of hours into painting a game that I didnt even know if I liked!) Very recently with my 4th boxed game I am starting to really see the benefit of having some paint on a model vs none or, a quick and dirty paint job vs no paint job or no game. It's taken about 4 years, but it's starting to click.

I really like how your videos are often more "musing about hobbying while some hobbying goes on in the background". Very relaxing and interesting, definitely provokes my thoughts. I also like how you bring up how you are willing to just "go for it" without planning too much, and are willing to simply redo things or change colors midway through. I've previously had a more perfectionist mindset when painting (I must get it right the first time!), but I've been hearing your voice in my head when I realize I don't like something, and I've gone through with changing it. I'm in the middle of my biggest project ever (the older Leman Russ model) and have had to make many do-overs. Magnetizing it is difficult, and at one point I had put two layers of basecoat down only to realize I didn't like the color -- so without stopping to plan, I made a decision to mix some paints and achieve the perfect color. Two more basecoats and while it looks very different than my original plan, I love it! Thanks for your efforts and passion. :)

(And whenever something looks pretty good, but not perfect, I hear in my mind in your voice, "But that's ok. There's a lot of other minis to paint, and this one looks good enough to play with.")

(These look great Brent, I love the *pop*!) I very deliberately decided to paint my army in sub assembly because of the sheer amount of units I want paint. It's to save time and not swap paints every two minutes. It's fairly obvious that if you're painting grunts, you want to cut back on the details, if nothing else for your own sanity and to avoid burnout. Not so much for a perfectionist and this is where you need to let go and not paint that bolter or rifle in sixteen colors and blended NMM effects. Just block in the colors and wash it. You should also respect what it is you buy. There's been a lot of 'shame collection' videos recently and there are people who have too much money to spend and don't appreciate what they've hidden away. For me something like a character model or an expensive single model, like a Primaris Chaplain, is something precious and special (even if they're monopose and all look the same). You should treat something like that with a modicum of respect and give it the paint job it deserves. edit; My favourite model is the pipe smoking alchemist, he has so much character to him! The dark elf you painted is missing warmth in the armor and it'll probably take a little bit of blending rather than a wash.

Agreed! For a nice/ expensive model I'll always want to give those the time they deserve. Some of these mage sculpts are awesome and deserve a 'real' paintjob, but since they're cheap 3d prints I don't feel so bad about cranking out a quick copy first :-)

For me, I realized was doing little to no painting because I was so hard on myself to get it "perfect". It would take me a week or two for one unit, which would burn me on painting for awhile. However, once I started doing simpler paint jobs and simple bases, I realized I was happy making sure there wasn't bleed over and some basic highlights. The main help for this was my own frustrations, but also coming across your chill approach and Uncle Atom's videos on the similar subject. Now I'm painting up my game pieces to the point they have some character, but I'm still able to punch through a unit or a warband/posse for smaller wargames like Pulp Alley, Dracula's America, etc.

It depends. If I want to get and army done by a certain day so I can play, I tend to spend all day, going for quantity (but still some quality) for a few days. But I prefer to just sit down in the afternoon and put on some music or a video and just take my time painting making sure I do a super good job, but only doing one. If you just want to add more to your army, or just enjoy painting while not having to have them painted for a certain time it feels much better to have a great model rather than ten okay models.

As an automotive detailer, I love my APC (all purpose cleaner). Super Clean smells soooo good (as cleaners/de-greasers go). Nice to know I have another reason to use it.

Novice painter here. I've painted roughly 15-20 minis altogether. Currently painting the zombicide set (need those zombies for a DnD campaign). I typically spend 2-3 hours on a mini. I still have a lot to learn but for my current skill level when I look at a mini after 3 hours of work I'm happy.

Sometimes the question is "Are you painting miniatures or are you painting armies?" I started the hobby painting 15mm Armies. The answer is 15minutes per mini. I have kept project records in a spreadsheet since 2005. 28mm minis -Troops -30-45min. Characters 1.5-3 hours. But the new trend towards plastic kits has added time. A space marine can take about 15min to assemble. Thanks so for your videos!

Great video as always Brent, I do tend to try and paint as quick as possible. Thinking about it, I would benefit from slowing down to focus on techniques and trying to improve. I enjoy this channel because you can actually see your painting improve more and more as if we are on the journey with you.
