In this video, we talk about a mechanic that can merge multiple creatures into on to pretty interesting effect: Mutate. Mutate allows you to cast creature spells that target other creatures you control. Mutate was originally introduced in Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths and is a ton of fun. I’ve made a tawnos the toyamaker deck from brothers war, and I’m not sure what happens after tawnos copies the creatures that is mutating. Would the copied mutate creature also mutate onto the same creature along with the non token one, or would it just come in as the normal creature (not mutated).

ok say I turn a land into a creature like Lavaclaw Reaches which has an ability to make it a creature, could I mutate on to it? If I can if I choose to mutate underneath will it become a land again at end of turn?

Does endless sands work with mutate? Let's say you have 3 creatures mutated and you exile it with endless sands. Then bring them back with endless sands all of them would enter the battlefield separate?

Older video, but I'm hoping I might still get an answer: If you were to exile and cast for free, example with Etali or the Auspicious Starrik, would you still get to mutate? I'm guessing no. Also When it says "for every time this creature mutated" do you count all the previous mutations or just the ones coming after?

I am working a commander deck with Mutate with Ramos, Dragon Engine and I have a question if you can answer it. I have Volo, Guide to Monsters in my 99, If I mutate and lets say one is a Elk Beast and the other is just a Beast, does Volo, Guide to Monsters ability still work? and would it work if was an Cat Nightmare Beast? I hope that all made since. I am sorry if it did not.

No. If any of the creatures have any of the same type volo doesn't work

How does Mutate work with supplement form or other targeted spells with other effects, would it copy the spell for each mutated creature or would it only make a copy for the top creature? I’d assume it’s for each creature but it is still one creature so I’m kinda lost on that one.

Once you’ve mutated a creature, all the cards are considered a single creature. If you cast an aura, it only modifies the creature one. If you copy the creature (with Clone or similar effects), the copied creature will have every single ability of the creature regardless of how many mutate creature cards were involved in making that creature.

@@HamHocks42 sorry for the follow up question, but there is a card called Growth Chamber Guardian, it has two instances of its name on the card. Would it be search for the card placed on top or would it search for another Growth Chamber Guardian like the card states?

How does a creature that mutates on top of paradise druid keep hexproof? The text says paradise druid has hexproof. Any card on top is not a paradise druid

Great question! When a card references its own name, the rules text recognizes the card name as a variable that can change. If the card name changes, such as with mutate or cards like Witness Protection, the game recognizes the change and treats the rules text as if it showed the new card name. In digital, the text will actually change, but that obviously can't happen in paper. Witness Protection isn't a great example because it strips abilities, but I think you get the idea. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
