How "Sibling Rivalry" Shows Chazz Princeton That Power Isn't Everything (Yu-Gi-Oh GX)

I actually meant to get this up yesterday, but unfortunately, there were a few editing snafus (and a couple of copyright claims) that I obviously couldn't ignore, so I had to take another day to sort all of that out before this went live. Hopefully you like it! The next video will hopefully be up somewhere in a couple weeks (on the regular Tuesday, with any luck), and probably won't be about Yu-Gi-Oh, so stay tuned to see what that is! This episode was definitely great for Chazz's development as he not only proved his worth as a duelist to his brothers who disowned him by winning the duel, but he did it with monsters that were deemed weak and showcased that power alone isn't enough in dueling. Of course Seto Kaiba wasn't worried. He's a pro duelist that knows an amateur when he sees one. Slade Princeton wasn't going to win the duel against Chazz despite having powerful monsters and limiting Chazz to weak ones, since Slade doesn't know how to utilize those monsters properly.

Chazz is the best! 5:27 Also dang, Zane appearently pulled 4 of these things and decided to either be super disrespectful towards his cards or just wanted to give the scrubs more friends.

Sibling Rivalry is one of my favorite episodes in GX. Not because of how good the plot is, (I’m partial to episodes of Season 3, actually) but because of the stipulations of the duel between Chazz and Slade giving my brothers and I the idea of doing this type of duel. I remember the first time my younger brother and I did this, the stipulation was that we chose the deck our opponent used, and funny enough, I had chosen for my younger brother to use an incomplete Cyber Dragon deck he was in the middle of building, and he had chosen an incomplete Dragon deck I was in the middle of building. That was the most fun duel I think I’ve ever had.

When it came to my favourite Chazz episodes (maybe even the entire GX series), it's this one and 'The New Chazz'. Me personally, it's just fun to see a duelist being forced out of his comfort zone and running an entire deck from scratch with a new overarching theme/strategy - and somehow making it work! To paraphrase Kaiba, it's revealing Chazz to be a First-Rate duelist by his winning with a fourth-rate deck. Couldn't also help but think that this episode served as a template/wellspring for future stories like it, like Team 5Ds' duel against Team Taiyo (who played the 400 ATK, 300 DEF Key Mace and built its entire strategy on keeping it alive for a hard-to-achieve summon), or Yusei's duels in the facility (one against Bolt Tanner, another against prison Chief Armstrong) using 'weaker' cards given to him by other inmates. Hell, Yusei's whole 'no card is worthless and I can find a use for any of them' schtick is a reflection of his upbringing in the deprived Satellite; and it reminded me of Chazz's incredible resourcefulness - a talent that just didn't show itself when he was coasting on cash at the start of the season. I also think that the makeshift deck wasn't just something thrown together out of whatever cards Chazz thought was best out of what was available; I actually think they were all working in concert with one another in a way. From the cards we see, Chazz was looking to stall for time until he can turn the tables against Slade (via Ojama Delta Hurricane and later Chaos Necromancer). It's not just Unhappy Girl, Dark Door or just the high-DEF Soul Tiger; Castle Gate (one of the monsters discarded via Painful Choice) can't be destroyed by battle. Copycat is a solid option to turning the dragons' strength against themselves by taking their ATK stat. And Relinquished seemed to share the characteristics of both by absorbing a monster's attack points (Copycat) and being partially indestructible (like Castle Gate). In soccer/association football terms, this is a 'sit-back-and-play-for-the-counter' plan. A more heartwarming observation in hindsight: When Chazz deduced who was behind stealing all the keys from the main characters in episode 39, he says that he knows of the culprits by revealing that the Duel Spirits (of the cards he used in that duel against Slade) spied on his behalf. It is quite possible that Chazz actually kept in touch with the haunted spirits, even when he is visibly annoyed with them; he kept their cards as keepsakes! That said, I kinda wished that Chazz's cards that he used to climb the North Academy ladder (in episode 24) outside of Ojama Yellow had a little more recognition or call-backs. I mean monsters like Skull Knight 2, KA-2 Des Scissors, Gyaku-Gire Panda, Disk Fighter and so on. They're the first cards that really forced Chazz to up his game, and like Ojama Yellow they had a front-row seat in his character development. Then again, none of those other monsters offer the comedic elements that the Ojama Brothers can.

You know, I can kind of relate to Chazz in this episode. Whenever I try to do a Little Cup battle in Pokemon GO, I realize that I barely have any Pokemon that qualify because I always power up and evolve my strongest Pokemon. That's why I don't usually bother with that format.

Heyo this is one my favorite episodes form season one. Legit was so cool to see that power didn't mean everything! And since then I was a fan of MANJOUME THUNDA. It even got to the point where his deck has been a staple of my dueling next to buster blader. If you ever want to duel someone with the rouge decks hit me up

The franchise is at its best when the stakes are around the level of getting the last cookie

Throwing away Cyber Dragon is pretty bad, but is nobody gonna bring up RELINQUISHED!? That card nearly single handily beat the best dualist of ALL TIME!

On the "take over the world" plan, one person on tv tropes pointed out how in the world of Yugioh, pro duelists are basically an equivalent to star athletes, so the plan was to have the brothers have success in politics, business, and the main form of entertainment.

A fun fact that was lost on the dub: not only do all of Chazz’s monsters fit the 500 ATK point cap, but he reveals that everyone of his monster cards actually has 0 ATK.

Man this was one of my favorite episodes! And the beginning of Chazz being my favorite Yugioh franchise character (before then it was Joey Wheeler). Still is my favorite in fact.

I wish Chazz hadn't won with a beatstick since it goes against the point he was supposed to learn. Then again, using a card like Relinquished and taking Slade's monsters would've also gone against the lesson. But if he had won using Magic Cylinder, that would've fit the theme of the duel 🤔

Fun fact: In the dub, instead of saying Chazz can only use monsters less than 500 attack points, Slade instead said 500 life points. Looks like Chazz needs to dig deeper in that one...

To be fair the dub likes to use other card artwork for background cards because there lazy so it probably wasn't actually a cyber dragon I'm more concerned that someone threw away relinquished! Legit that creator of the whole game boss monster
