It's been a good while since I've talked about Yu-Gi-Oh on this channel, and also it's been an ice age and a half since the last "Why I Like The Thing" video, so, hey, with how hard I've fallen back into Yu-Gi-Oh in recent months thanks to Master Duel, and the fact that today (November 1st) is actually the in-universe birthday of today's subject, that's as good of an excuse as any, right?
Anyway, let's take some time today to talk about why I'm such a fan of one of Jaden Yuki's main Rivals in Yu-Gi-Oh GX, the Cyber Dragon specializing, little brother borderline-disowning, would-be edgelord of Duel Academy, the one and only Zane Truesdale!

Hey, everyone, thanks for watching me ramble on about why I like Zane Truesdale from Yu-Gi-Oh GX! It's been way too long since I've done a "Why I Like The Thing" video and a fair bit since I've talked about Yu-Gi-Oh in any capacity here, so hey, two birds one stone, right? I really hope you enjoyed this! As for future uploads, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are coming up and most likely the next thing I'll be doing on this channel is covering that via a playthrough of Violet. So, unless I decide to do something fairly simple around my birthday (November 14th, by the way!) like a cheeky little QnA or something, there most likely won't be any more uploads for a couple of weeks so that I can kinda take it easy for a bit between the recently-completed Creepytober and the forthcoming Violet LP and get ready for that, haha. Hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween, and that your November is off to a good start! Also, DRINK WATER.

Cyber End Dragon's first anime appearance in that duel between Zane and Jaiden was SO EPIC it was made into a card, Cyber Eternal

Zane is probably my favorite character in GX. His character arc was honestly pretty interesting. Plus his transition into what the Japanese version calls “Hell Kaiser” was amazing because it showed how much different Zane was from the duelist he once was. Plus the Cyberdarks were interesting cards. Though I am disappointed that we never got to see a rematch between Zane and Syrus in Season 4. Would have been a great way for Syrus to finally surpass his brother and for Zane to pass the torch to Syrus.

Yeah, if they were gonna magically bring him back after he died to his heart condition anyway, it would've been nice to see a proper Duel between the two -- no Cyberdark cards (which were a big part of what killed Zane to begin with), just Zane's pure "Cyber Art" Deck against Syrus's Vehicroids, and a lot of it could be about who better knows the difference between using a card and playing a card (something that was so crucial to Syrus and Zane's dynamic early on).

Even though Zane Truesdale has and always will be my favorite character in all of Yu-Gi-Oh, I feel like I KINDA understood why they tried to bring him back in season four. Kids were watching, people who were rooting for him to redeem himself and return to the glory he had, the writers didn't want to end such a legacy character so callously, so they brought him back. Though, as an adult now who was previously OVERJOYED that Zane came back, I feel like leaving him to finally rest would've been the best option. Zane was corrupted emotionally after losing, and the stress of everything that was happening was gonna lead to his legendary finale. The only thing I wish I could've seen from Zane, to kinda nod to the whole "similar in spirit to Seto" thing, is to have Zane tell Syrus he's proud of him, or that he loves him. Syrus wasn't the BEST duelist (kid earned everything he got, I'm just not crazy about Cycroid deck), but he wanted Zane's approval more than anything. As far as I remember, Syrus never got that connection with his brother, and I feel like that was a missed opportunity.

This character is great, not going to lie. I get the common critisism of him being way too rough of a guy originally, but that's sorta what Season 3 is there for. He basically gets the doublesided motivation of using his edge for good and chasing a potential last glory, because it was obvious from pretty early on that he was tragically on the way out as a result of his prior mistakes of misguided masochism. Also, he uses active shock collars as throwable weapons! In a 4Kids release! That's the coolest thing since sliced bread. The scene of his last words to Jaden and Syrus is so insanely good too. Cyberlegacy forever! (No, JP GX doesn't exist, it's a myth.)

This is my main issue with him being too rough. Zane says he gives props to people who earn it but gave none to Jaden in the first episode when he dueled Crowler. Also the special school Zane went to that was taught by Sheppard just makes his personality towards Syrus especially make no sense. Zane was not like that in the school and i feel like if he was showing signs of it Sheppard would not have allowed that behavior. Also the only flashback scene we get of Zane and Syrus is when they are both kids like Zane is blaming Syrus for a mistake he made as a kid sure Syrus was inexperienced but again i'm sure if Syrus went to the school taught by Sheppard Syrus would have been at least less likely to make the mistakes he did. Syrus isn't really shown making multiple mistakes anywhere in front of Zane. And again Zane had a level of education that Syrus didn't. Also in the Dub Zane becoming Kaiser makes no sense he says because nobody checked on him like dude what in your personality showed that you would have liked people checking up on you with the exception of Alexis. He could have called the gang at duel academy as well if he really needed moral support.

Seeing your character art next to Zane Truesdale makes you look like a Yu-Gi-Oh self-insert OC, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Pretty much everything I know about Yu-Gi-Oh comes from you, but I totally get why Zane resonates so much with you. But holy crap, someone actually died on Yu-Gi-Oh? In the English dub?! Man, the GX series went hard.

Yeah, I had that thought when I put Zane's art next to my own, too, haha. Like, "Yeah, this isn't too far off, actually". And yeah, actually, SEVERAL characters died in Season 3 -- aside from Thelonious Viper, who was the central antagonist of an arc that lasted for a cup of coffee before Yubel took center stage and, regardless of which version you watch, absolutely fuckin' died, there's also the fact that Chazz, Alexis, Hassleberry, and Atticus all bit the dust back to back during one Duel (TL;DR, they were used as sacrifices to fuel the creation of a super-powerful card). The English Dub tried its best to be like, "Oh, they were SENT TO THE STARS~!", but let's be real, they were fucking dead. Season 3 was DARK, and 4Kids could only do so much to soften the edges of a lot of things in it, like Yubel's character arc and motivations (which I might make a video about somewhere down the line).

Season 3 of the GX dub had no chill and basically just decided to be super lax interms of censoring, all things considered. If anything, they actually made it darker in a way because the japanese version was really vague about the plotmechanics and implied that people dying was just a lie. Meanwhile, the solution of the 4kids-version is instead sort of a thing of "You lose your physical connection to the current world and if Yubel doesn't force you in a sucky pocket-dimension, you get slingshotted across the dimensions, which has a chance of you not re-materializing anywhere". For all we know, countless people still ended up dead in the end and the state of things is sorta dire. Actually, secondary sequel-material looking into this potential interdimensional crisis would be really neat, but dubchanges sadly have a sub-0% chance of getting proper expansion, even if they are actually good.

This is a weird thing with me and Zane I was honestly disappointed that the Hell Kaiser stuff didn’t go anywhere they were setting up with everyone trying to snap Zane back to his old self Atticus Syrus Shepard but It never happened like the direction they went in was fine but just weird that they didn’t wrap up that plot thread in season 2 I’d have had Chazz take him out in the GX Tournament especially since I’m pretty sure we never got that match up

Yeah, it's one of those weird things about GX, like, the writers definitely had a problem properly wrapping up certain plot threads or utilizing other characters that well (the most obvious example being Bastion). Definitely not a great choice to set up the subplot of everyone trying to get Zane back to his old self and then not really do anything substantial with that, especially when you consider the whole transition from "Zane is a heartless bastard who only cares about winning and likes watching his opponents suffer" to "Zane's still kind of a dick but he's a bit more chill about it now" was definitely kind of abrupt, and it's something I would've gone into more detail about in the video itself if this was in the "A Matter Of Character" series, haha. And yeah, we never did get Zane VS Chazz, at least not in the anime. In the GX manga, however, there WAS a Zane VS Chazz Duel, where Chazz (who's presented as a MUCH more serious and competent threat to Jaden, and who actually BEAT JADEN once!) lost to Zane without getting a single point of damage on him.

No one actually references the fact that Zane never lost in the manga but seems to become Hell Kaiser anyway. Zane may not be as prominent as his anime counterpart but it’s important to note that his air of Invincibility actually never wavers in the manga. This give credence to what kind of role the writer wanted Zane to have in general. Cyber Eltanin completely obliterates Chaz and hes beaten eerily similar to how Zane beat Jaden in the anime Also Zane is one of the few characters mentioned by name in Yugioh Arc V and is listed as a Legendary duelist who hailed from the Fusion Dimension using some cards that he used in the origina series and some he did not. Meaning that after season 4, he continued to duel and became even more powerful and notorious. He is also mentioned in 5Ds.

Ngl Season 4 kinda ate with what they did with Kaiser and Sho, to have your deck literally diss you for just going for the OTK every single duel is great. Kaiser wanting his final duel is an awesome motivation but within the themes of GX, it feels like an unearned death. Kaiser followed only one path to power but with Sho he realized that the problem back then wasn't because he lacked power it was because he wasn't flexible or inventive enough. Like in school, if you graduate while only following academics you'll be worse off than a guy that did extracurriculars or found a passion for something. Kaiser was that guy, he only focused on being the best with the best deck and the best mastery of it. He didn't have Judai's love for heroes, Chazz's connections to his cards, Edo's motivation to be a hero. He was suffering from "prodigy burnout" and double downed on it so I liked that he was still alive after S3, he needed to learn how to pick himself up properly this time now without any of the pressures that led to him getting the edge.

Right? Like, I still hold that it was a combination of both, but we really CANNOT underestimate the detrimental effects of constantly exposing oneself to electrical shocks, especially in a card game that has already always been depicted as taking a lot of your physical energy to play at an elite level.

I really do enjoy Zane, especially from season 2 and onwards. This sounds bad, but I wished he stayed dead, the only purpose of bringing him back was to give Syrus character development (never been a big fan of Syrus tbh), but I don't think it was needed because Zane had already provided and gave Syrus closure in telling him that he was proud of him in his last dying breath. Also unrelated, although I found it badass when Zane threw most of his deck into the sky in some of his duels, the card player inside me is baffled on how Zane isn't worried about his cards flying off never to be seen again lol.

Yeah, that's what bugged me about Zane in Season 4, like, not even JUST the fact that he kinda just came back with no explanation, but also it was just for another character moment for Syrus that he didn't really need at that point, not to mention it kind of undercuts the drama of his dying moments. That, and, if you're gonna just shenanigan him back to life, you couldn't at least double-down on the convenience and make it so he didn't have the fucking heart condition anymore? Like, why even let him live if he's still got the thing that killed him???

@@SuperNerdDaniel Another thing that slightly bugged me was when Zane let Syrus keep his Cyberdark deck. I know the explanation is that the deck requires the user to constantly break their limits and Zane felt like he already reached his full potential, while Syrus had plenty of room to grow and even surpass him, but it doesn't really feel that heart warming when you know that Syrus is essentially risking his own life every time he plays a duel.

Right?! Like, "Hey, this Deck nearly killed me just now and contributed to ACTUALLY killing me (which you were witness to), but I'm sure you'll be totally fine"?? Like, NO, half of Syrus's friggin' character arc was about him feeling like he sucks at the game because he's not as good as Zane and constantly being stuck in his shadow, so why would he want to keep using a Deck that's heavily associated with Zane instead of forging his own reputation and proving his own worth with his own Deck like he'd been trying to do up to that point?

I can't be the only one who thinks the chest x-ray shots of Zane's heart that we see throughout Season 3 are pretty cool. The artists really nailed it when it came to drawing every detail of these x-ray shots,like the rib cage and the heart itself,especially the animation of the heartbeats.

7:05 I totally forgot about him and that :D, they should left out the heart disease thing :D he was like 18-20 years old. Also how the hell did he fall that much i was in country a local champions with only 3 cyber dragons and better self made deck then other with cyber dragons. I get that after top grades, life sucks is a major frickin hellish shock, but he could become a teacher, make new deck, work at McDonald’s anything but just dieing to dualing it pathetic.....i got emotional lol. He was no doubt a GRATE character, its a shame what the authors did to him.
