In 2001, the Seattle Mariners tied an MLB record by finishing the regular season with 116 wins. After a tough series with Cleveland, the historic Mariners were off to the ALCS to face the New York Yankees. But this was the end of the road for a team so full of hope and expectation. The Mariners lost to the Yankees 4 games to 1 and things only got worse from there.

It’s also worth noting that Hiroshi Yamauchi, who owned Mariners, never went to a single Mariners game while alive even when Mariners played few games in Japan.
@paraisoinformativo
@paraisoinformativo 3 года назад
MLB commissioner Fay Vincent and ownership committee were strongly opposed to the idea of a non-North American owner and did not approve the deal. However, following the strong support and sentiments of the people of Seattle and press, the commissioner formally approved the deal, under the condition that Yamauchi had less than 50% of the vote. This was a major development in American baseball, because this opened the gates for Japanese baseball players to American league teams, which had been previously denied. In 2000, the club made its first profit of $2.6 million since its acquisition by Yamauchi. And as you mentioned, Yamauchi never attended a Mariners game.

@closethockeyfan5284
@closethockeyfan5284 5 лет назад
@Harry Engel You make a lot of good points. Everything had to fall exactly out of place for that game to implode. So I appreciate your condolences regarding the Pirates. The change in format to the wild-card game screwed the Bucs more than anything. They were built to win series but not an individual game in 2014 and 2015. There is no other scenario in which MLB has teams play single games instead of series. Moreover, there was not only a disparity between their record and Chicago's in 2015, but the Bucs were second-best in the MLB. They just had the misfortune of being in the same division as No. 1, St. Louis. So once they lost the wild-card game instead of getting the automatic NLDS berth in 2015, their All-Star core (Cutch, Cole, Liriano, Harrison) imploded historically and everyone forgot the brass had built a legitimate contender from scratch. Now the largely illogical majority of the fan base is blaming the owner (who took control in 2007 and implemented the rebuild that turned around the franchise) for every loss since 1993 and crediting none of the success to him. Moreover, they maintain blind loyalty to the shell of Cutch and insist he should've gotten a blank check to play for Pittsburgh forever. It's so frustrating because the main sports media in town placate the simpletons with unsubstantiated (i.e. therefore unethical) conspiracy theories about the owner sabotaging the team, all for cheap ad views and radio listens.

As a Mariners fan, just seeing those comments again from Lincoln makes me unbelievably frustrated. What's funny, is that he (as well as Chuck Armstrong) really stopped commenting to the media altogether as things got worse and worse through the 2000's. The general message from diehard Mariner fans when he and Armstrong stepped down was "don't let the door hit your ass on the way out," and for good reason.

I would have been 6 during that 2001 season, so I don’t remember much of it firsthand (except, ironically, one of the few losses, because it was the 1st game I ever went to), but coming back and doing research on how it all went wrong is so eye-opening and frustrating in retrospect, because you can still see ripples from the greed of a few and how it has negatively affected the team and the community for so many years since.

@Fries As much as Safeco / T-Mo is a good entertainment venue and has a meticulous field and all, the "stadium that Junior built' never had input given by its players on how it should be built. A voice in saying how the stadium should be enclosed / built akin to Minute Maid / Enron Field not to mention fence dimensions really would have helped keep Junior in Seattle over him opting to want to play at Cinergy / Great American Ball Park.

Ive always wondered other than money, why have a post season ? I always think the team that is the best over a season should simply be the best team. You can win all 150 games in a season and then lose in the first round in the playoffs and it's all over coz one team went on a run at the end of the year. Does that really make them the best team ? When the Patriots lost the SB after winning every game, were they all of a sudden not the best team that year ? I'll never understand it
@Andvare
@Andvare 5 лет назад
@@scottallan7931 Because TV. Soccer has both. The regular season might be interesting, but the real TV draw is the elimination cups. Elimination cups have the do or die excitement at the last matches, the regular season might not have a deciding match, especially if one team is dominant. If the NFL, as per your example, didn't have the quite random crapshoot they call a Superbowl run, the 2007 season would have been over after 13 games, with 3 more or less meaningless games remaining. This means that the big crowd pullers for TV, the big money makers, is impossible to get some seasons. Do or die games simply makes for better TV, and with a elimination structure, you can ensure they happen. That they are random crapshoots, with outcomes that have only a little to do with deciding the better team, matters little there.
@scottallan7931
@scottallan7931 5 лет назад
@@Andvare you make good points, of course playoffs and cups have the excitement of do or die and a winner but I have seen a number of times across different sports a team finish as low as eighth with a 45 percent winning rate after the regular season, make the playoffs then win 3 games in a row and be called champions which should be for the best (most consistent) team of the year overall

Maybe they get past the Yanks if they keep A-Rod, but at that time Texas shocked the world by giving a contract that only the Yankees would’ve offered, long before the Red Sox and Dodgers joined them as biggest spenders. The biggest kick in the nuts though was seeing the long suffering Angels pass them in ‘02 for the WC after they blew the division to the A’s to win their 1st and only WS. 21yrs later they remain the only team in MLB w/o a WS appearance thanks to the Nationals(fka Expos) winning it all in ‘19.

Originally, I am from Seattle. I go to college in Illinois with several Chicago kids, mostly all Cubs fans. When they won in 2016, the first thing I asked each and every one of them was "are you finally willing to concede the Mariners are the most cursed team in baseball?" This is a team that last made the playoffs when I was 4 years old and in preschool, and right now I'm a 5th year student in college. A baby born on the day of the last Mariners playoff game would be month and a half way from being legally able to vote in the US (and they're definitely not making it this year). To be honest, it's one thing if the team was a regular season juggernaut but couldn't win in the playoffs. But since that 03 season, the Mariners have had 5 winning seasons (07, 09, 14, 16, and 18), and 4 of them they had genuine chances to be a playoff team (all but 09). What happened? The A's either got hot and stole the Wild Card spot, or they played spoiler against Seattle. To be honest, I hate the A's more than any other team, including the Yankees and Angels, even though I respect the hell out of their general management (ownership not so much). The 07 team blew a Wild Card lead in August, the 14 team was eliminated on the last day of the season because they had a great rotation but one good hitter (Robinson Cano), the 16 team started well, tumbled horribly in June, and went on a hot streak only to be eliminated on the second to last day of the year, and the 18 team blew an 8.5 game lead in the Wild Card standings, falling from 24 games over .500 at the time in July to 16 over at the end. This is the first time they've tried to attempt a legitimate rebuild where they tear everything down in a while, though, so I have some level of hope. Not much, though.

Lou Pinella was a great manager, but he had a flaw; he coached using his gut, not analytically. I’ll give a couple of examples how this doomed them in the postseason that year. First of all, he started Jay Buhner who spent almost all season on DL. A move done out of loyalty. Secondly, I remember a game against the Yankees where he had Edgar Martinez try to steal a base. Edgar is my all time favorite Mariner, a hall of fame DH, but probably the slowest man on the planet. Out at second, rally killer. Went on to lose that game. Man, it’s amazing that I remember all that nearly 20 years later.

Analytics are to be thrown out of the window during the post season. Just look at how many World Series wins the Athletics, the Rays, and the Pirates have despite those organizations employing "Moneyball." They don't feel like spending extra money to complete their pitching staff and fielders. There are tangible numbers to use from playoff games, but often times you just see players defy expectations from the numbers guys and lead their teams to victory.

As a Pittsburgh fan, I've had my fair share of losing and then some. But even the trauma of countless games with scores like 20-0 (against Milwaukee), 17-2 (against Chicago) and 15-1 (against St. Louis) can't compare to the utter heartbreak I felt when we were eliminated from the postseason. I had never known what winning felt like, and then that feeling was suddenly destroyed. On the bright side, my favourite ever line from a newspaper article only existed because of a horrific offensive showing one night, where (I'm paraquoting here) "Better contact was made by Jalapeño Hannah [one of the Pierogi Racers] than any of the batters, when she whacked another Pierogi over the head with her purse." I wish I had cut this out and framed it, as I can't seem to find it anywhere online (so I can check the real wording), but I will forever cherish it as only a die-hard fan could.
