This is what generous people do on RU-vid: share fascinating knowledge. I loved this video. I’m an immense fan of The Name of the Rose-best bibliophile mystery of all-time-but I didn’t know The Swerve and The Nature of Things (which is also the title of a famous Canadian scientific TV show, hosted by professor David Suzuki). Thank you this insightful class! 🙌🙌

I’m so happy you like this episode! Thank you for your kind words. I’m at the moment working on an episode about a book that can be called the Google of 500 years ago. I think you might like that episode too. Will be ready in a couple of weeks. Take care! 🙌🙌🌟

The Indians and the Chinese didn't forget it though. In the 13th C., Master Dogen writes about the atomic structure of things and even mentions the "countless contractions and expansions of the Universe"

@@BoldBooksandBones Thank you. Looking forward to the next episode. I have seen The Name of the Rose film several times but have never read the book. Out of curiosity, what language did you read The Name of the Rose in? I ask because I assume you speak Dutch and maybe French and heard that your German is quite good in the interview with Dr. Jürgen Müller in addition to the fact that you make these videos in English which is also very good.

Always a great pleasure to listen to your insightful recommendations and reviews. I actually came to “The Swerve “ via Carlo Rovelli: what an amazing detective story in itself, and it did remind me so powerfully of “Name of the Rose”. I would be really interested in hearing your reading of Carlo Rovelli’s work.

Dear Jane Irisa, thank you very much for sharing your kind words and for making me aware of the work of Carlo Rovelli. I just watched a lecture of him online. What an impressive man. Which book of him would you recommend me to read?

@@BoldBooksandBones the one which deals with Lucretius is "Reality is not what it seems". So a good place to begin. To be honest, my scientific education being sadly lacking, I struggle to understand his explanations of space, time and gravity, and need more time to read and re-read his books , and listen to his lectures and discussions. He writes beautifully and clearly, and reveres poetry and literature and their creators, as well as the giants of science. And he seems like an altogether lovely human being!

"il nome della 🌹" (="The name of the rose")? I honestly believe that it derives from the line from "Romeo and Juliet". When Juliet says: "Romeo..oh, why are you Romeo? The rose would still. Have its sweet scent even if we called it by another name." (Please, forgive me for this improvisation: I do not know the exact verses.). Similarly the content of a book .its value in terms of contribution to knowledge...is worth in itself ("the scent of rose') even though some arrogant/malicious/self-righteous people may consider the book as unworthy and detrimental and call it by any other name, but rose.

Il nome della rosa comes from a latin quotation of some medieval poetry, which states that "stat rosa pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus", which alludes to the nominalist school of philosophy of the Medieval Scholastica. The original phrase of Bernard of Morlaix states "stat Roma pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus" which means "The Rome of the origins exists no longer, expect by name, and we only have of her empty names"
