On February 9, 1982, Japan Airlines Flight 350 crashed on approach to Haneda Airport in Tokyo Bay. 33 years later, on the morning of March 24, 2015, Germanwings Flight 9525 takes off from Barcelona on its way to Dusseldorf. Moments after reaching cruising altitude, the plane begins to descend. Find out what really happened.

If a person is guilty, he is guilty. Whether or not he is medically unfit should not overrule the fact that what he did was illegal/wrong by law, and should not be exempted from lawful punishment. The fact that he was allowed to fly already carries the presumption that he is medically fit to fly, which includes being mentally fit. So to commit a crime under that approved state of health further invalidates the point that an unfit one is committing it. Don't you agree?

@sarahpiaggio2693 3 года назад
Yes, I think according to UK and US law he'd still be considered capable of standing trial because he showed an awareness of guilt immediately afterwards and tried to escape detection. I'm not sure it's possible to argue that he had a psychotic break and committed the crime while hallucinating so he was unaware of what he was doing, then immediately after the crash, he recovered and became aware of reality. That must be suspicious
@Amoreyna
@Amoreyna 3 года назад
@@sarahpiaggio2693 As I've gotten to deal with hallucinating people in my line of work, I got to say it's not that simple. And in this case - he wasn't just hallucinating, he had paranoid schziphrenia - so what looks like guilt may have been cause by him thinking something like he was stopped from saving everyone (the FO did manage to get him restrained and tried to save the flight) and believes he needs to hide. His actions may have been due to fear for his life and not from guilt. For Japan to find him not guilty by reason of insanity he had to be pretty bad off - it's an exceptionally rare accepted outcome of a criminal proceeding in that country. What makes it so sad, is that he obviously had lost the capacity for making sound decisions and was in need of someone to do that for him. The airline refused to remove him from duty and mental illness in the country is still often seen as a personal weakness and those with it are often isolation and stigmatized. Even worse, was that he was under care for a psychosomatic illness and no one picked up (or chose to) that he was severely mentally ill and allowed him to continue flying despite hallucinations and episodes of paranoia. There were so many warning signs that he was unfit to fly and the airline just chose to not even touch on it. That willful blindness killed twenty-four people and caused suffering for many more that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
@sarahpiaggio2693
@sarahpiaggio2693 3 года назад
@@Amoreyna Yes, clearly there were many warning signs and the airline were at fault since they knew that there was a serious problem and did nothing. My comment was about the concept of legal insanity (in UK and USA; I don't know if they have something similar in Japan). This seems to be quite a narrow definition which doesn't make place for complicated diagnoses but relates strictly to 1) the person's awareness that something is wrong and 2) consciousness of guilt. But it is true that for Japan to not throw the book at him, there must have been some glaring extenuating circumstances.
@redarrowhead2
@redarrowhead2 3 года назад
Well it's funny, because to me that is actually more evidence that he was having a psyhocitc/schizophrenic episode. The man was showing signs of schizophrenia. He misunderstands reality.

Psychotic disorders are an umbrella term for disorders that have symptoms including hallucinations. From what I know, auditory hallucinations are more common than visual hallucinations in schizophrenia. The pilot’s paranoia and un-indicated hallucination can be a plethora of disorders. It was February university exam season in Japan and we were all flying often to Tokyo to visit universities there to take entrance exams. One of my classmates, my friend, was staying at "Hotel New Japan" where a big fire took place and 20 some people died on Feb 8th. My friend survived and his father rushed to Tokyo on the next day, Feb.9th, to help him. He took this flight, JAL 350. Father survived too. My friend decided that he was too upset, understandably, and not ready to take any exams that year and waited for a year for next exam season. But after all I think they were very lucky.

There should be a lavatory on the flight deck, not cut off by a door that can be locked, preventing the captain or co- pilot from getting back to the controls. This was only possible, because of the ways that airlines and aircraft manufacturers responded to hijackings of aircraft. It would have been better to build aircraft, where the whole flight deck is entered and exited separately than passengers, and the cockpit crew have their own lavatories and galleys, sleeping berths, and enough room for an off duty pilot, incase something should happen. In years past, there was always a flight engineer on every flight, in addition to the pilot and co- pilot, so there was always at least two people in the cockpit, if someone had to use the lavatory. I suspect that the position of flight engineer was eliminated to save money.

On reflection, I don't think these cases, or the MH370 are really about depression and an attempt at suicide. I've never met a suicidal person who would be willing to take others with them. I think the decisive factor is their psychosis or paranoia. These people are more than depressed, they are deluded. As for the MH370 pilot, I think his main motive was not suicide at all, but hatred for his government. Similar to terrorist religious martyrs. I gather he had attended the court case of a charged politician just before the flight, even wearing some shirt declaring his view. This sounds like fanaticism to me. I'm sure early media reports stated that he left a note at home, I suspect it declared him blaming the corrupt government for his actions to teach them a lesson. Anyway, that's me playing amateur detective.

He said safety of my passenger is top priority. After delays and smooth flight and smooth landing, I saw him while leaving the aircraft and thanked him. He just smiled. In the first story of the Japanese airlines, this captain Katagiri was found not guilty for reasons of “insanity” right? and yet, he was very “lucid” and “clear” when he pretended to be an “office worker” to save his miserable life until he was found at a hotel with the rest of the survivors! Unbelievably disgusting man. This captain, I hope, is no longer piloting a plane; he is unfit to be and should be held accountable for his actions regardless whether he was sick or not. How about the 24 victims who perished because of him??? Their lives doesn’t count at all? Very disturbing, and sickening. What always amaze me is that people with mental disabilities or issues go to psychiatrists and yet, knowing how sick they are mentally disturbed, they continue to engage in horrible behavior. And the airline(s) continue to “ignore” this issues knowing that they are putting in danger innocent lives. These airlines are to held accountable also for tragic crashes, that’s my opinion. Because for them, MONEY is more important than human lives. Just disgusting and disgraceful. No wonder people file lawsuits, they deserve it everything they get. 😡😤😤😠

If I recall, the Captain had a code that allowed him to enter the door, but the system had a lockout for hijacking that the person in the cockpit could lock out the code for a period of time. He would have had to keep doing that, since the Captain could have reentered after the time expired. People have talked about the ground controllers being able to override the airplane's controls, but that just moves the issue. Then it would be possible to crash the aircraft from the ground.

SUGGESTION: You should do Japan Airlines Flight 351, where a boeing 727 was hijacked on its flight from Tokyo Haneda to Fukuoka, the aircraft was then hijacked, and the aircraft landed in fukuoka, where negotiations had been set. 23 people were released in exchange for more fuel. The hijackers wanted to go to Cuba, due to them being part of the Japanese Red Army (A communist group), and with Cuba being a communist nation, they could receive military training and then set their revolution in japan. HOWEVER: They could not make it to Havana, since the 727 didn't have the capacity, so they decided to go to Pyongyang. As they landed at Mirim Airport (East of Pyongyang), the Hijackers had been surrounded by what they thought were north korean officials and sympathetic crowds, but instead, this was the local police, and some actors. What they did not realize was, that the Japanese, The South Koreans, and the CIA DISGUISED Seoul's Gimpo airport to look like one in pyongyang. As the hijackers realized they were in Seoul, they had to act fast. During their time in seoul, there was a 3-day standoff. After 79 hours, the hijackers released all the passengers, and headed to the real Pyongyang Mirim Airport.
