Chris Arpin shows how-to achieve uniform orientation when painting with silver and metallic colors. The key is to apply last a drop-coat (control-coat) that is 2x the distance from the surface as regular coats and applied with reduced pressure to avoid dry-spray. Colors featured are a base of 6013 AutoBorne Silver Sealer and over that 4103 Aluminum Coarse.

Nice job!! In only 8 minutes you, not only demonstrated something more useful than most other videos on here but also explained and demonstrated it very well! I haven't painted in 25 years and I'm taking on shooting my Jaguar next month with a hi pearl Ferrari color (grigio silverstone - what a color!) and I was having some concerns about tiger striping and mottling. Even just picked up a W-400 Iwata myself in 1.3. Hope I have my shit together after my hiatus, thanks for a well done video!

I've struggled with metallics quite a bit during my ten years of painting, due to a lack of proper training in the booth. I'm finally getting better results thanks to videos like this. The next one I do I'll use this technique and air adjustment and see how it goes....

Great job explaining something that makes metallics doable for the hobbyist. Question for you: Painting a car with metallic panel by panel has always been the easiest for a hobbyist but has always been discouraged because of differences in the metallic look between the panels. How does this work if you just spray the panels for coverage, then assemble and drop coat the entire car for uniformity? Seems like a solution, have you done it? Thanks for your help, Rob

What clearcoat do you use as a high gloss one over a midnight blue metallic paint my truck is a older truck GMC Canyon SLE 07. Don't know what clearcoat is best for it. I saw in past from someone else on RU-vid saying don't sand metallic paints. My older truck was metallic painted too but just a bright silver metallic.
@CreatexColors
@CreatexColors 3 года назад
We recommend a gloss 2k urethane clear. Createx paints are compatible with any 2k urethane clear. While we most often use PPG EC550 for a quality, high gloss finish, we recently sprayed C-800 ICON Clear with good results, spraygunner.com/american-icon-1/. Thank you.

In this case you lowered the pressure and doubled the distance between the panel and spray gun.This caused the paint to be darker and go on smoother"velvetlike". if you raised the pressure would that cause the paint to go on lighter but produce a rougher finish? Thank you.Nice video though on videos it is so hard to see the difference but you described the difference well.
@CreatexColors

The drop coat is at reduced pressure, increasing the pressure creates texture / a rough finish. Thank you.

So we sprayed a metallic paint and didn't pay attention before we cleared and after clear there is tiger stripes what's the best way to getvrid of that Do I re prime the pannel or do I sand down the clear and respray color?
@CreatexColors
@CreatexColors 3 года назад
Depends. Best may be reapplying AutoBorne Sealer followed by metallic color. If the striping is not too bad/ noticeable, you may get away with just applying a few more coats of metallic color after sanding the clear flat with 800-grit. If in doubt, reptile then reapply the metallic color. Thank you.

Can I add 20% more reducer to make it lighter on a 2:1 mix
@CreatexColors
@CreatexColors Год назад
It would be better to lighter the concentration of metallic by adding more 4050 UVLS Clear as resin will be added as the color is extended, providing better film formation compared to over-extending with reducer which can negatively affect adhesion and coating integrity along edges, difficult areas. If you wish, perhaps make a test panel comparing extending the metallic with 4011 Reducer vs. 4050 UVLS Gloss Clear. We prefer the 4050. Thank you. www.uvlsclears.com

Hi, i had problem because this is my first time doing metalic color, and i didnt spray drop coat..now, my panel have uneven and splotchiness.. How can i getting rid of them ? Thank you
@CreatexColors
@CreatexColors 3 года назад
Depending upon how uneven, if just a bit sanding the existing finish flat 800-grit sandpaper followed by another 2 coats of the metallic, then a drop-coat should work. If very uneven, it may be best to re-apply AutoBorne Sealer, followed by metallic coat, www.autoborne.com. Thank you.

It depends upon the condition of the existing paintjob, however, yes, we'd always recommend starting with AutoBorne Sealer so the ground coat has good adhesion and any minor scratches are filled-in. Thank you.
