This Industrial Design video is about adding value to a cube. I show you how to add and calculate the correct values of an object based on its initial color using the handy half way to black method.

Thank you! Your pragmatic approach of finding values in greatly appreciated in a world where art teachers insist on everything being subjective. I always thought that if a program can use an algorithm to determine accurate values there should be a non artistic approach to it, thanks for sharing!

Shading a Cube: my new Industrial Design video shows how to calculate the correct values of a cube and the shadows that are cast by the cube. I use the Half way to Black method with some prismacolor markers and pencils to lay down the value of the surfaces to create a believable image.

Thanks for sharing this. I have been wondering how to go about shading in shadows and this helps quite a bit.

Ahh it sounds so confusing! So does this mean if you choose 2 as your lightest value (as example) you would choose halfway between 2 and 10 as your darkest dark? And then halfway between the 2 and the 6 as your middle? So the lightest would be 2, the middle would be 4 and the darkest 6? Is that how it works? D: Thank you for the tutorial! I'm learning how to paint better and this is really helpful.

How do you determine the values if the surfaces are sloped rather than vertical or horizontal?
@EricStrebel
@EricStrebel 4 года назад
The value will be somewhere in-between the two, depending on it's orientation to the light

hi eric didn't the shadow of the cube is one value upper than the darker value of the cube ? at the beginning you have a 0 2or3 and 5 isn't de shadow a 4 ? I was thinking that the cast shadow was 1 value lighter than the darker part of the cube thx
@EricStrebel
@EricStrebel 9 лет назад
Geoffrey Icard I don't quite understand your question as your sentence structure is incredibly poor. The same rules apply for the surfaces and the shadow, but you can make adjustments as needed to make the image read better.
@geoffreyicard70
@geoffreyicard70 9 лет назад
sorry for my sentence. Your cast shadow value(on the ground) is the same with the darker part of the cube 5 ?
@EricStrebel
@EricStrebel 9 лет назад
Yes, that is correct, you can adjust it as needed to make your sketch read they way you feel is best based on the lighting conditions you create, if you feel you need to make it lighter to read correct you can do that, if you want to make it darker you can try that as well. Shadows tend to fade as well depending on atmospheric conditions, but they are usually darkest closest to the object.The rule is not absolute, but merely a guide.

Let's say a cube his 'true' color has a value of 3. So the core shadow color will be around 7. However shouldn't the face that is receiving the light be a 2 instead of 3? Because it gets brighter then the true color
@riccia888
@riccia888 5 лет назад
This is not true. Go outside and see the real world. For example go out in mid day and look at the uitility poles with black eletrical wires and cables when hit by light the brightest value of the black cables arent 6 but 0 because the the light is so bright. The value of 6 only apply when overcast neutral light not on a sunny day.

riccia888 Perhaps...there are exceptions to every rule, if you feel you need to bend the rules to make things work out, be my guest. Thanks for your comment and support.

This tutorial is about rendering a matte object. The electrical wires are probably made from a metallic or glossy material. These materials absorb less and reflect more of the light source and environment around them. Wich is why we see an increase in contrast. Creating a stronger highlight and reflected light. Hope this helps. (Sorry for my bad englisch)
@g43654
@g43654 4 года назад
Most electrical cables aren't matte, as PVC has a slight sheen to them. Also, because of this slightly reflective surface, there's also the Fresnel Effect that exaggerates the harsh highlights on these cables under the strong sunlight. Adding on top of it all is the curved, cylindrical nature of the wires which squeeze the highlight on the side facing the sun. Oh and not to mention any moisture/oil/residue that is on the surface or raised up due to the heat could also reflect the light a bit more.
