I would pay this guy to call me every morning and tell me a story.

I feel like all of Christopher's stories could be some good movie scenes... If any Hollywood movie producers are watching... this guy is hilarious.

You also solo it from the rear, for center of gravity reasons. So... it has the most complete instrumentation. Fuel controls/shutoff is usually (always?) only in the rear as well magnetos, though I have seen mechanically linked mag switches up front. What is interesting/mildly hazardous about old planes is that controls are not very standardized, sometimes between different years or models of the "same" plane. There is a variation of the Piper Cub that has the fuel shutoff on the other side of all the others, that uses the same knob and same location as carb heat. So, you pull on carb heat on downwind as you reduce throttle only to be on final and maybe need a little throttle to keep a margin over the trees. But the throttle just makes squeak noises because you cut off the gas. Good times.

Ah, man, if I ever bump into Christopher somewhere I hope I can buy him a beer, Coke, whatever his favorite drink happens to be, and spend a little time chatting. It’d make my day.

I’m loving Chris, his stories are good and very interesting what was happening during my time as a kid and now I’m wishing I was him.

This is me Dwight not my beautiful wife Cindy……….. when Chris tells a story it’s like my granddad telling me a story. I’m listening with both ears. My dad instructed new cadets to fly Stearmans in WWII . Oh bye the way, she is my wife at the time. Anyway you are so lucky to be able to learn flying from your granddad. If I had been in your position in rural Pennsylvania I know I would have set something on fire but I was in the suburbs of Philly so I’m sure I would have crashed into something big or caused some big national news crisis. I love your great stories Dude. No pressure, but I will have a great day when you can tell me something that went on in Athens or on the Florida Everglades or in some college in Alabama, or in a cool rental Mustang in Arizona, etc, etc, etc. I don’t want to miss one!!!

I haven’t heard that in forever…. “You could fall in a bucket of ice cream, and still come out smelling like 💩💩💩!” …. I think my grandfather said the same thing to me lol.

Christopher: I grew up in Georgia same as you did. My dad worked for Lockheed in Marietta just outside Dobbins and had a good friend who had a Stearman. The man’s name was Jack Couch and he also was an engineer working for Lockheed. I’m wondering if that rings a bell. He flew from a little grass strip called Gunn Field, in later times we saw his Stearman over at Peachtree-Dekalb Airport. Anyway I love your stories and think you could publish one hell of an entertaining book/screenplay if you wanted to. Live long and prop ‘er!

now these were some amazing stories

My grandpa got 3 or 4 speeding tickets after he retired. He bought a brand new 1983ish Chevrolet Silverado, 1/2 ton/2wd/long box, two tone grey, loaded with power windows, nice black velour seat, all the options. Well after a few years, after he bought a nice FWD Olds 88 for Grandma(really for both of them to drive long distance). That truck was now 7-8 years old, told her the engine was "using oil and low on compression". I'm thinking that 305 V8 wasn't fast enough, he swapped in a hopped up 383 V8 according to my uncle, knew a guy who built him a good street worthy engine, kept the a/c working. I remember riding in his truck, it was a bit loud when he floored it, it shook a bit at idle, it looked stock as a rock with the rally wheels and camper cover on the bed. When he matted the gas those tires squealed and you were thrown into the seat, man was it fun, grandpa scared me a bit a couple times on I-81 flooring it from the on-ramp to who knows how damn fast.

Dang, Christopher is a man of all trades.

My last flight with an instructor in a glider before my Solo was a pretty funny flight. I had worked a thermal all the way up to 2000 meters and my instructor said allright, i think you are ready for flying alone, lets loose some altitude so we can get you back in the air alone, i already checked around us for traffic during thermaling, go ahead an pull full elevator and push full left rudder! I of course did that without delay, did a perfect figure we call "Törn" in Germany, and as soon as i entered the nosedive sideways out of stalling i could see nothing but the canopy of an LS4 which had been thermaling below with a friend of mine looking at me quite frightened. Me and the instructor both pulled full elevator until we leveled out, and he said, well if you werent ready before you surely are now, lets descend with spoilers this time ! :D was quite the story at dinner later, especially with the other pilot recalling to see both our faces, he said we looked very funny, so scared :DDD
