I actually didn't know the context of this movie going in but the trailer for the second made me intrigued so learning that he was a pretty awful person in his own right was a bit of a bring-down... Like at least the sequel girl wasn't created through r[ROUGH SNUGGLING OF DUBIOUS CONSENT}e and rather saved from a meth lad but still holy shit

I feel like if they had made the criminals lives much worse, it would have been much better than making the vet fucking terrible. Example for the girl, instead of having a little sister, they could have had it be her daughter which she had from a uhm... *coughs in monetization* 'encounter' from her 'father' and so she wants the money to get away. It still keeps in the concept of abused girl but without making the vet fucking psychotic. I know people can be crazy, but I also know my grandpa and even if he was old, he was still so sweet sometimes (he was a seabee) That would make you root for the dimwits 20x more and make you more sympathetic to their cause instead of making you want the vet to die more, which is arguably better story telling

Honestly, I still couldn't be bothered to feel bad for them. They literally forced the conflict to happen. I mostly just felt like the guy needed some serious mental help after I saw how broken he was. The attempt to assassinate his character towards the end also just feels weird after they backtracked by making him the hero of the sequel.

i feel like i already said this somewhere but i'm 100% sure that without the trapped girl in the basement the audience would cheer for the blind guy and that's the only reason she was added to the movie. The idea of stealing the insurance money from a blind vet who just lost his daughter (his only family) is so fucked up that is basically impossible to see the protagonist in a good light without having the "victim" (the blind man) be even more fucked up. I call this kind of situations "hanging the child" (i made the name after watching "enemy at the gates") and i define it as "a situation where the writers makes the antagonist do something insanely Irredeemable because they realized that they made him too likable compared to the protagonist"

Someone else already said that the twist with Cindy felt really tagged on to make the burglary victim worse than the burglars, so we would root against him. How would the *blind* guy even have the newspaper cutouts at 20:43? Did she make them because he forced her? Did she have them out of guilt and kept them hidden in case someone walks into the basement so she can explain her situation? And that tape wouldn’t keep someone with two free hands gagged for long. That whole setup is just unrealistic...

Many people are saying they didn’t like the twist but the twist definitely made this movie get the attention it got lol. Shifting the tone from thriller to basically horror. They get what they get for breaking in someone’s home. Especially a blind vet who lost his daughter. But after the twist, tacked on or not. It became impossible for me to root for the old man.

The error of this movie is that they never have something on hand to use it, like give the captive girl a pocket kneef, dogs are bad going upstairs so they could easily use a crowbar etc etc. When the pistol guy got grabbed he could have tossed the gun to the side or just dropping it, it would have been 2 arms against 4

Lot of complaints about the writers forcing him to be a bad guy but imo the weird thing is how there's a lot of evidence that indicates they were also still trying to make him sympathetic. I mean aside from the dead daughter blind veteran thing, they write him in a way that somehow attempts to avoid the assault of the force insemination (albeit poorly) and then at the end he doesn't try and pursue her with legal action. So instead of just committing to the deplorable bad guy who deserves to be robbed shtick they weirdly insert some "but he isn't *that* bad" stuff in there too which I think is so bizarre. I guess they were setting up for that sequel where he just becomes the terminator, I guess
