If you'll like to know more about our sales process please give us a call @ 336.800.8883
LookUp Aviation www.lookupaviation.com
I've been asked several times; what's your sale process at Lookup Aviation? I'm taking the opportunity to answer that question in this video.
If you're looking to purchase or build your on airplane, a Sling TSi, NGT or Sling High Wing, first you give us a call or simply fill out the contact form here www.lookupaviation.com/contac... and we'll definitely give you a call back.
During our conversation, we get to know you a bit, your journey as a pilot, what you currently fly etc.
Assuming you are now building your plane with us, we would send you a price sheet which will also have the structure payments that goes like this:
- 30% initial deposit: this goes towards buying and shipping your airplane kit
- 30% second payment: once your kit arrives it's time to start building. We also place an order for your engine.
- 20% third payment: Your engine is ready to be mounted and we order avionics
- 20% final payment: Upon completion and delivery of your aircraft, you will then make the final payment.

First of all, I think that the Experimental plane market especially with a Builder Assist program is the wave of the future for GA. There is no way the current used GA market is sustainable and there are very few new planes coming on the market that are even somewhat affordable. If you compare a brand new Cirrus SR20 ($640K) and maybe the Sling TSI that is comparably equipped for under 400K, the Sling is the way to go. The biggest question is with the Builder Assist and I would recommend putting together a video of the build process from start to finish, with dates and the times the builder had to spend at the factory. It would provide a realistic window on what someone may have to go through so they could plan accordingly. For some people, it still may not be realistic for them. But for those of us who don't want to spend 3-5 years of their weekends (and the entire use of their garage), the Builder Assist is the way to go.

Spent the better part of today working through the parts inventory checklist of my newly acquired RV-14 (tailwheel) empennage kit before watching this video. Sling doesn't offer a model that fits my mission, which is respectable cross-country speed and occasional "gentle" aerobatics. I considered four seats, but came down on the fact that I'd be hauling around two empty seats a vast majority of the time. And, I'm back to wanting acro capability. Even spins are prohibited in the Sling. If I were looking at you for built-assist for any project, I'd need to know how many projects you've assisted in, and customer feedback. How many projects has your outfit assisted in and completed?

As a new GA pilot, insurance is fairly expensive even for an experimental. I Tried to purchase a RV 9A last year (way less than a 4 seater) and it was a downer. Best is to partner with 3+ potential owners to share fixed expenses. That would lower costs somewhat.

The FAA plans to introduce a new category of aircraft called the "Light Personal Aircraft" (LPA) in 2023. It will be comparable to other 4-seater aircraft, and allow more weight, more thrust, more speed and more...everything. LSA would continue as a subcategory. LPA will probably require a full PPL. FAA is even looking at allowing LPAs to be used for limited charter services (air taxi). If the current proposals stand, LPA could cover much of the smaller Part 23 certificated airframes, including the Sling. The real benefit is that instead of using part 23 for certification, LPA will use Industry Consensus Standards. Those are standards created by builders, then ratified and published by the FAA. The FAA is not involved, other than advice and using their power to make the standards "regulations". This means Sling could "certificate" their planes using a much simpler regulatory process, and they would no longer be experimental. It would be similar to the existing LSA process, so a shoe-in for companies like Sling. The goal is to kick-start GA out of the grave. Congress forced it. There are only a handful of modern aircraft designed this century. Even the gubbermint realizes we need more, and that existing Part 23 regs are locking out new competition. So long as Textron doesn't kill the proposal (you know they are trying, right?), we might see a resurgence in the market. Why buy a Cessna when I can get an LPA certificated Sling?
@Jschreck5
@Jschreck5 Год назад
Would this apply retroactively? Or would it be for planes (such as the Sling TSI) that are completed after the LPA category comes into existence?
@FamilyManMoving
@FamilyManMoving Год назад
@@Jschreck5 It's a process certification for construction, using standards that industry create. The FAA reviews the standards, then makes changes with industry where required, and finally publishes those in the Federal Register. None of this has happened, and because the new category will depend on the standards not yet adopted, older airframes will not be covered. BUT...there is a chance they allow a process to certify/"reconstruct" existing frames, but only if the process is documented in the standards. I do not know if this is proposed, but I have seen other such industry-leaning standards include them. I will suggest that any airframe built with personal labor ("homebuilt") instead of manufactured entirely by industry, will not be part of the new class. Even if it looks just like it, and has the same model number. The Icon A5 has a certificated version, and a sport version. It's all about the process.

I have questions, but I've been hesitant to call you guys mostly because I fear I'll end up just wasting your time. 1) When is the right time to start? My timeframe for wanting a Sling TSI is probably 2 years away. I'm a student pilot about to take my checkride. And I want to get my private and instrument rating in a nice slow Cherokee 140 before I add 150 kts TAS to the mix. But my goal is cross country flying. And the Sling TSI seems like a really great fit. 2) What is the base level of instrumentation that comes in the kit? I know that I don't need a full glass panel like the mojosling has. But I do want to not have a vacuum pump, and I want a GPS and probably an autopilot. Is any of that part of the base kit? 3) If the plane costs >$300k and the kit and components cost $120k, are you saying that build assist costs over $180k? Or is the >$300k include more than just the build assist costs? I have a ton more questions. But these are the big 3 that keep me from calling you guys.

If you Google sling tsi price you will find what it used to cost and what in costs now. Thank I flatiron but it's about 25% more now than it was 2 years ago just for the kit, engine, propeller, and all options. 120k might get you a standard kit with engine and constant speed prop. 2 years ago you were looking at about 220k fully compete with parachute and best builders assist You're looking at about 135k now with quick build, engine, constant speed prop. For parachute, paint, interior upgrades, and glass panel can cost another 120k. So about 250k just for everything you need fully loaded....then the builders assist. Lots of information online to determine the costs.

I think you're being too conservative with the costs and what you charge. The kit, engine, prop, interior, and paint would probably almost 200k....so don't sell yourself short.

@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 2 года назад
Couple of points. The plane has some good qualities, much cheaper to fly than cessna and I presume cirrus too. But at over 300k plus living away from home for weeks at multiple times, it's just not as good value as it could be. Could you work with Sling to get them to make a composite version instead, with a near single piece body, that's better looking, more aerodynamic and much quicker to assemble and certify. If they have a good business model in making a superior plane for 200k all done, that's a vastly better value than a life quest experimental at over 300. That could be 10 or 100x more sales. It's night and day, it's a no brainer, it's a given, it must be done. In the meantime, is it technically allowed for your company to buy the kit, build it and use it a bit and sell as used experimental? Because this whole quest play time rivet thing has to go. It's bad business. It's a massive unnecessary hindrance. Call up Volkswagen or Tesla and ask if it wouldn't be better if customers came and lived at the factory so they could build 51% of the cars themselves while their hands are held. Work with Sling, work with FAA, whatever it takes. The kit industry must die except for ultra low volume novel designs. If a business is engaged in series production with employees then the kit process is a massive anchor they are swimming with on open seas. And then if you want to really succeed get a small turbofan engine developed. A few good men, seek investment, suddenly 500m$ factory and lycoming is going out of business.
@Austinmediainc
@Austinmediainc 2 года назад
Come on Dan, do you not think any of these kit manufacturers have tried??? Its the FAA and the 51% rule....if you have 2 pieces to put together you're not doing 51% right? Well that's the rule. Big market already for kits, ask Vans they've sold 10k + kits and it will take you 1-2 years to get one. There are people that will skirt the rules and build it for you. In Canada and other countries you can have a professional build it for you. That being said it will probably cost you between 75k and 125k for the labor depending who you use and what they charge.....$100 an hour for 1000 hours....well you can do the math. There are many more other things to consider with experimental. You can use any engine, avionics, and make any other custom change you want, you can't do that with a certified airplane. It will also cost you double for the exact same parts because they are certified. So when you compare 300k fully loaded with the performance and options almost fully built to 600k plus for something with less performance and half the options and technology I'd say that's a pretty good deal, but everyone is entitled to their opinions.
@scottmiller4711
@scottmiller4711 2 года назад
Wow, you are all over the place with this comment and it appears you need to do more research on working with the FAA and ASTM standards. There are a ton of videos out there that address those topics as well as the "Glacial" pace at which the FAA moves to improve their processes. Regarding cost...first off and chisel this one in stone "Aviation is an expensive hobby" don't get in unless you can afford it and then some...You think the cost of his plane could be $100k less than he paid. Do you realize he has almost $200k in just kit, engine and avionics? Remember my first point about Aviation. You want it done fast then you are going to be using Builder Assist and guess what that is going to cost you because of the labor and expertise. What makes you think that it would be cheaper and better to build the plane out of composite materials? Cirrus Aircraft are composites and they have one of the most expensive airplanes on the market. It is much cheaper and easier to provide cut and drilled aluminum "in a kit" than it would be to build a composite shell and then ship it (especially from South Africa). Sling, Zenith, Vans (with the exception of the SLSA RV12), etc. are not aircraft companies they are kit manufacturers. Go look at the FAA's aircraft registry website and you won't find one Sling TSI (there are only 20) that was "Manufactured" by Sling. My bottom line here is that the Experimental rule has opened up aircraft ownership to many more than if it did not exist (but there are rules that govern it). It is a great thing and if Sling decided to go into the Aircraft "building" business the cost of their TSi would be north of $500k completed...remember my first point!
@whisky3k294
@whisky3k294 2 года назад
You want a single piece , all-composite shell, easy to certify, more aerodynamic, and you want it cheap? You sound like someone without a basic understanding of the aviation industry. "Bad business"? "Massive unnecessary hindrance"? You're free to avoid all the "inconvenience" of building your own plane and buy a new one from Cessna or Diamond. Just add a 200K-300K and more to the Sling price. Cirrus? Put aside a million. If you don't want a experimental kit plane, don't buy one. I don't understand why a whole industry "must die" just because it doesn't suit your needs. Shouldn't that fact that other people are buying the Sling kits clue you in that the kits are obviously meeting other people's needs? I get that you want cheaper things, but I also don't know what you expect a random RU-vidr to be able to do. FYI, you are not required to get the build-assist. You're free to buy the kit and build it all yourself in your own garage if "living away from home for weeks at multiple times" is yet another "massive unnecessary hindrance" that you simply cannot put up with because you expect things to be served to you on a platter. As for your armchair business consulting...if you have everything all worked out, I suggest you draft up a business plan and find investors yourself. If you can really guarantee to put Lycoming out of business, you won't have a difficult time finding investors. You just have to put your money where your mouth is.

What you have failed to communicate here is that you can only buy buy a brand new factory assist build experimental airplane with cash. No bank is going to finance in Aircraft that doesn’t exist as in no airworthiness certificate. No factory is going to build your aircraft without you making payments. Kind of the chicken and the egg problem. So you’re really stuck with financing somebody else’s used aircraft, pulling cash out of your 401(k) or a HELOC loan on your house.
