Like biting into a Crunchie!

I dont mean to be so off topic but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost my account password. I appreciate any tips you can give me.

Ben - You may well be right! I only know the way I know and very rarely have used a knife. If there's a link you can give me so I could see some pictures of your work, I'd love to see what you've been doing.

@@woodcarvingworkshop1 I've only got pictures of the recent carving I've been doing these are rather crude since I've only the use of my right hand after suffering a stroke I'll ask some of my family to send me pictures of the lovespoons I carved them for wedding gifts as they are pre stroke here are what I've carved recently bear in mind that these can take me months as I only have access to the woodshop one day a week .photos.app.goo.gl/a57GDqk1uEvEmvG69 Obviously these have no where near as good a finish as I'd like or as good as yours but they give me pleasure and they are sold to raise funds for the charity Day center that has the woodshop I use .

@@benstradling7615 just seen the photos you linked, your work is superb.

Graham - I'm using Jelutong, a sort of rubber tree from Malaysia. I could have used Limewood (Basswood); both carve easily and take detail. I think a light coloured wood is better than dark because the relief is quite shallow and we need to see the shadows clearly.

Look for a distributor of Pfeil tools. The short bent skews I'm using are actually very flat gouges rather than chisels, and 5mm wide. You buy the skewed versions of these Pfeil gouges as a pair, left and right. So, you want to buy Pfeil cut '2a/5l' and '2a/5r'.

Richard - Right at the top, text just under the video: Jelutong, a sort of easy-to-carve rubber tree. You could use lime, basswood or any of the harder woods: maple, cherry etc; but not open-ringed woods such as pine.

shahramvedaei8573 - For this style of carving, you need a plain , tight-grained wood. here i am using Jelutong, but you could use, Limewood, Basswood, Brazilian Mahogany, Walnut, Birch - that sort of thing. With open-grained woods, such as oak, the small parts tend to break off, especially where the fibres are short. Hope this helps!

Wickis - The wood is Jelutong,which is a sort of Malaysian rubber tree, very stable and suitable for carving - and a light colour, best for low relief like this. You could use Basswood or limewood as alternatives.

Walnut wood is best for carving

Cecilio - I wouldn't recommend it; the grain is too open and weak. Best use a tight-grained hardwood.

Robert - Apologies that wasn't clear. There are 2 types of 'bent' gouge: shortbent, where the bend starts towards the cutting edge, also called a 'spoon' gouge; and longbent, where the bend starts more or less from the shoulder, also called a 'salmon bent' gouge. Here, I'm using the shortbent, spoon type gouge - and very flat - for cleaning up the tight recesses. To get into corners, I'm using a pair of the same, flat shortbent gouges but skewed, to the left and right. Pfeil makes very good ones of these. Hope this helps!

Sarwar - Well, there is definitely more than one way to do this! - and I'm glad your method gives you satisfactory results. I never use carbon paper because it always seems to leave the wood dirty; also because it's adding an extra step, and with a level of error in copying my accurate drawing. I certainly don't feel my method is complicated or difficult, but then I use these tools day in day out in my carving! One of the reasons I don't use a V tool is because if you look closely you'll see the apex of the V is actually a little rounded, and this can't give the precise junction that you get when chisel cut meets chisel cut. But, as you say, perhaps the softer look is what you are looking for - I'd love to see a picture of your work!
