I show how to open, clean and lubricate an SPD pedal. I show examples of two different SPD pedals, one that can be opened with a 17mm wrench, and one that requires a Shimano TL-PD40 tool. I am not sure, but I think the pedal I clean/lube in the video might be made by company other than Shimano. Possibly Wellgo. But the process is exactly the same. I used marine grease (water resistant grease) to lube the inside. And for the outside parts I used chain lube (oil).

Gets right to it! Thank you for not having some big explaination or being a new anchor like other 'mechanics'. Parts are king, we don't need to see the people with long explainations. Process is king. You think they tell all the factory workers all the technology, just get it done. Go learn on your own. GREAT VIDEO! THANK YOU! TO THE POINT JOHNNY OVER HERE THE BEST

I looked at a few different videos, and this one is the clearest and best explained

I just overhauled my exact same pedals a couple days ago. But i unscrewed the bolt that holds the bearing in place, cleaned all up, and put the lithium grease inside. They work like a charm now again!

Great breakdown thank you! I have had an annoying creak for the past couple of days & have narrowed it down to one of my SPDs. Your video has given me the confidence to do the job & crucially, I have decided to delay the job for a couple of days & order the plastic shimano tool to remove the spindle properly. Cheers RJ!

Very clear video for basic clean and lube. If doing this I would suggest you remember to make a good visual inspection of the pedal body to confirm there are no chips, cracks, gauges or general damage. It would seem that goes with out saying... I'm just syain.

Great video RJ. I use "Wurth HHS 2000" Spray grease. It works well for a lot of things on the bike as it penetrates before evaporating to a thicker grease. My only bug bite is the price $$ of the "plastic" shimano tool TL-PD40. I had a friend make a metal one on a 3D printer for me.

You can find the tool cheap on ebay.

I had a creaking, thinking it was the bottom bracket. Nope, the pedals just needed a good clean!

Great job n great videos. Thanks. You may notice that there were not much grease in the pedals in the first place. The friction between the moving parts seem to be within the needle bearing itself. Anyway to take apart the needle bearing and lubricate the bearings inside?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 10 лет назад
This method does lubricate the bearings inside by pressing grease up and out through the inner part where the bearings are. The yellow pedals in the video have a cartridge type bearing. The black pedals have ball bearings with cup and cones. I am going to overhaul one of those and do a video.
@n1chr0me6
@n1chr0me6 10 лет назад
shyflirt1 For the ball bearings with cones, if you just want to lube them, can you still use this method? I.e., is it necessary to overhaul them just to lube the bearings?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 10 лет назад
For SPD pedals like this, with ball bearings and cups/cones, the grease will be forced up through them using this method.

Hi there, Thanks for the video, Question, I have the same pedals that you have in the video (no the yellow ones), they are giving me troubles when trying to release the shoes (I did not use them for a long time), do you think that some lube only will solve the problem? Thanks in advance.

Adjust the release pressure.

What about disassembling the axes itself? Inspecting ball bearings etc?

The pedal in the video has a cartirdge bearing, but here is another spd pedal that has loose bearings: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-utLU4kAHk_Q.html

Did you make a video about making a shimano tl pd 63 tool? It's a double socket axle adjustment tool and it's way expensive online.

@RJTheBikeGuy 4 года назад
I have not made a video like that. I have a video where I use a tool like that.

I didn't/ don't want to use oil externally on my mtb spd's for obvious reasons... Not sure what is "best", after washing, I used the wax based Squirt I use on my chain, then clipped the shoe into the pedal and wiggled it around to work the lube into the moving parts. What do you (everybody) use to lube the clip parts on your MTB pedals? *Update* after letting the Squirt chain lube dry for a few hours, I hopped on the bike: smooth as butter!

Is it possible you can make a tool for the SPD pedals instead of buying it ?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 9 лет назад
Probably. But considering you can get them for under $5 (including shipping) on ebay or Amazon, it's probably not worth it.

Does not lube bearings. Not really useful.

+Robert Douglas Sorry, but this is the proper process to lube the bearings in these pedals.
