Easy way to deal with pipes blocked by heavy rust deposits in non-potable water systems. Free up pipes clogged with rust using CLR (Calcium Lime & Rust Remover) from Jelmar . #plumbing #handyman #watersupply
Transcript provided for the hearing impaired:
Alright so today on Repairs101 I've got this tap that just will not flow and I looked into it and it's because the pipe that's feeding it is blocked solid with rust. So I'll just show you what I did with that.
So this tap gradually stopped flowing. So I traced the pipes and I figured it must be the mixer or the aerator since the toilet was on the same feed and worked just fine. So I removed the mixer with the intention of cleaning it since I had replaced it only a couple of years before.
It was clean as a whistle -- but it was as clean as a whistle. So obviously the problem was further upstream somewhere. So I opened the valve and... nothing.
Then I shut off the water to the building and I removed the valve stem only to see that it was rusted solid inside. I tried digging at it with a seal pick but it was as hard as iron. So I put a sprayer nozzle on my bottle of CLR and I shot some into the pipe.
Now this is a fairly safe product and you can have a look at their MSDS sheets but I would recommend, strongly, that you do not use this in any water systems that are going to be used for drinking water or in food preparation or in any kind of kitchen application or in the production of food like watering gardens.
Now you can see the CLR softened it right up. So I put a little more in. I let it sit for a few minutes and then I washed it out with clean soapy water. Then I just put the whole assembly back together again.
You know, then I put the stem valve back in, turned the water back on, opened up the valve and waited for it to clear itself.

I just had my well replaced due to it being waterlogged and it has clogged some of my pipes with rust and mud. I just wanna know how long it took for your water to build up pressure again because I’ve let it run after replacement for about 5 minutes. And still no pressure

Your sink valve is a 1/2" compression fitting. You do not use Teflon tape on compression fittings. They do not seal that way. Use Teflon tape only on NPT threads. Pipe threads only. I come behind amateur plumbers all the time and find a mess of Teflon tape on compression fittings. All it does is make it harder to remove the nut. I even find it on drain fittings under the sink. The tape interferes with the pressure seal of the fittings and actually causes leaks rather than sealing them.

Yup, thought I would also mention why put it all together to clear it instead of just the valve and line into a bowl ? Which keeps you from having to now clear the screen on faucet also.

🟠 HERE IS ANOTHER FIX: First shut off the main water source, then run a garden hose from the neighbors house or completely separate water source. Attach the garden hose to the the clogged water fixture. There are adapters available at home depot if you dont have a perfect fit. Open all connected faucets and/or fixtures, and also remove the GPM flow-restrictiors from these plumbing fixtures which will allow and backwash the collected sediment/clog out the other way through these fixtures. Run hot water through the garden hose if possible, hot water can potentially loosen up sediment and clogs better. Alternating from cold to hot in 5-10 minute intervals can also expand and contract the pipes loosening clogs/sediment up as well.

I mixed 25% CLR in a gallon of water and ran it through my cars cooling system to get rid of a nasty rust contamination. While flushing it out it melted the bottom of one of my tires into black goo. This stuff is ridiculously strong. Took me 2 days of continual flushing but I got it. It chewed through a rubber coolant hose and sprang a leak. Replaced the hose and was good for another 6 months until the rust came back. Something must be rusting internally. :( CLR is awesome stuff just be very careful with it. I would run that tap for a couple hours. You do not want to drink even the slightest ppm of that stuff. Great video!

Thanks for adding that! I have also used it on engines but had no idea about what it could do to tires! Thanks for the warning.

Repairs101 Not just tires, rubber hoses in the cooling system too. It eats through rubber really quick. Starts working on contact. Ever see what aircraft remover does to paint? That's what CLR does to rubber. Lesson learned the hard way.

Nice video. I have a problem under my bathroom sink where I have no water pressure at all. I am going to install a new faucet and have two 20" flex lines for under the sink to hook up to my water line connectors. But I hit a roadblock, the current lines leading from the faucet to the main hot & cold connectors are galvanized lines. They are straight pipes a half inch in diameter and seem frozen to the hot & cold connectors. Would you be able to tell me how to disconnect the galvanized lines from the connectors without messing up the connectors and copper lines behind them? The galvanized lines seem frozen to the connectors. I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks. I will include a picture with this message.

pro tip..if youre removing the shutoff already (well kinda lol) replace with 1/4 angle stop...those multi turns are notorious for going bad and not shutting off...you could use the old nut/comp sleeve, youd prob need some tape and dope though

@repairs101
@repairs101 9 лет назад
Marva Nelson Seems your diagnosis is off. The chances your drain pipes are rusted are very small. More than likely your DRAINS are all made of plastic (or possibly bronze / brass) and are clogged with hair, toothpaste, soap, makeup and whatever else goes down the hole. The rusted pipes shown in this video are SUPPLY pipes bringing fresh clean water to the sink. Have a look at my videos "Clogged Drain?" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qg6Y8PyeNkk.html and "Jewelry Down The Drain?" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P9OTXrif6Hw.html for a comprehensive understanding of what you are dealing with and how to fix it. Good luck!

@repairs101

Don't risk contaminating your well. Replace well pipes. Isolate house from well, pour in CLR at highest point(s) and drain then flush repeatedly before reconnecting to well.
@aurrasinger

In case anyone else has a similar question, a product called Iron Out works great and has directions on the bottle to flush a whole house water line by adding it to an empty water softner tank. Works great, stronger than CLR, and specifically meant to flush a houses pipes as well as daily rust cleaning around the house. Good stuff!
@DJDevon3
@DJDevon3 10 лет назад
Odds are the rust will come back. CLR is a band-aid. It addresses the symptom not the cause. You'll probably end up revisiting that pipe in the future.
@repairs101
@repairs101 10 лет назад
It is definitely a quick fix (and even a bit of a desperate measure). It's all slated for replacement soon, otherwise this would have been a replacing pipes video.
@Rizalreez

What do you suggest if the pipeline for kitchen use is clogged the same way?
@repairs101
@repairs101 9 лет назад
***** I might use the CLR and only use the water for washing dishes until I was certain there was no residual contamination. It may be too inconvenient for you to get all your water for cooking and drinking from bottles but my experience was that it was odor free within 10 days to 2 weeks, so for me it would be no big deal. Your only other option would be to replace what you have to with new pipes.

Interesting! I had used the CLR before for calcium and lime stains removal, but never works. Surprised it is working for such a thick rust. I have my kitchen sink clogged. I think it is due to rust in the pipes somewhere. I did put some industrial drain opener, it hasn't opened the clogging, but seems to bring up a lot of brown residues, which I think is rust. I don't have the CLR at the moment, but do you think if I pour some CLR down the drain, it would loosen up the rust? I suppose it does not hurt to try at this point, before calling a plumber. Right? Thanks in advance
@repairs101
@repairs101 8 лет назад
+Mahle77 - I'm not convinced your drain pipes are clogged with rust - they would have to be very old to be steel sewage pipes. Maybe this old video of mine will help ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qg6Y8PyeNkk.html

Downstream of faucets you don't draw for drinking or cooking, if you flush your system good you probably won't have any trouble it's not going to stay in there forever I've used this stuff on coffee makers in the reservoir and then run several pots of water through it and hasn't done anything to anybody yet

Good old well water likely. High metal content will leave a nasty film inside the pipes that builds up over time. If you have BAD water, this happens if you don't flush your system periodically. Previous well water houses I've lived in were fine. Moving to the south, my local well water is really bad without a rediculously good filtration system.
