From walking in the door, to going to my asvab test, took me one week. I researched the crap out of everything I needed to, studied for the asvab before hand and now my recruiter loves me even after I have a ship date and all. It's really about how you present yourself. WildBlueYonder That comparison between the Air Force and the other branches was spot on! I've always thought that we were the Lamborghini's of the Military.

Hey man did you call/send emails first or just walk in? Because every time I call, my local recruiter doesn't answer. I'm thinking about just driving down to the office with my mom?
@khanarodriguez9318
@khanarodriguez9318 8 лет назад
+Charles Tornes it was the same for me. I sent emails, calls etc and even thru the Air Force website and nothing. I just walked in to my local office and said I wanted to join the Air Force and then say I sent an email(s) but have not heard back. And then proceed to inquire about it. Ask questions about a job you're interested in etc. or ask if you could schedule an appt to Come back and sit down and cover all your questions and get info about ASVAB scores, jobs, life in the Air Force and so forth.

hey WBY, I have been watching your videos because my son joined and was wondering what all he was doing and having to go through in BMT. I especially liked this one for telling young people to treat recruiters like a future boss and also where you talked about the eliteness of the AF. You are smart and grounded and seem to know what life is about. thank you for your time making these videos. they have given me peace. God bless!

Great video man. I went to my first recruiter and I got a 76 on the practice asvab. Defently can do better with some more studies, but he just fed me a bunch of bullshit. I could tell he was lying. He had horrible eye contact and everything he said didn't add up with what I researched... He pretty much fed me the usual SF, PR and electrical/mechanical jobs. He totally disregarded all 8 jobs I had listed on my dream sheet. I am going to see another recruiter hopefully she can work with me...

***** Hey. Unfortunately, some people can get the run around with paperwork. It can be your recruiter's doing, maybe he is new and didn't know, or maybe he knew but he just dropped the ball.. Either way, it's important that your recruiter is doing their part in getting you into the Air Force, which includes informing you of all the paper you need when you need it. This is very important, and it's important for recruiters to remember the importance of their job, but unfortunately.. there isn't much you can do but be patient and voice your concern to your recruiter. Hopefully he will pick up the slack. Good luck! A lot of people, including me, have to wade through crap before they get in

WildBlueYonder My recruiter wants me to take my asvab when i get to MEPS. I had a high score on the practice test, he said that is what they usually do. Do you know the benefits of taking it during MEPS is it better to do it then, or before? He also was pushing me to do airborne linguistics. @WildBlueYonder
@WildBlueYonder 9 лет назад
Gaining intelligence from out adversaries through using drones and satellites. (Air Force description) Is it a bus, a street vendor or a tank about to attack? Those are the kinds of questions you'll face as a Geospatial Intelligence analyst. As the eyes of the intelligence community, you'll analyze intelligence imagery from satellites, remotely piloted vehicles and other sources in order to discern the mundane from the dangerous. You'll learn to focus on the details, as they are the difference between victory and defeat.

Just an update here. For while the AF is going to be expanding a bit in the next year or so everything WILD BLUE is saying is still very valid.. Currently we will only hire about 26,000 in a year from all over the globe. That's a darn small number which means, "Why should be show an interest in you?" Remember people come looking for us; as a rule we don't go looking for them so if you are serious about joining you need to give that man in the blue suit a reason to take an interest in you.

@antares4s
@antares4s 9 лет назад
Very good points. I stress to everyone I talk with that. 1. This is a job interview, act accordingly. We don't need to recruit or have quotas. Fact is that we just don't need people like the other services do. 2. You have to impress us that you want to be here and are not just fooling around. Reason: For every applicant, we already have 20 qualified people waiting in line for every job opening. So you have to stand out from the crowd as motivated and wanting to join or we just simple move on to the next person. 3. We are highly selective and getting more so. So come prepared to sell yourself to us and then score high on the ASVAB test (50 min. 60+ preferred). Those are the keys to being offered enlistment in today's Air Force.
@antares4s
@antares4s 7 лет назад
***** Oh he may have talked to you, even acted friendly and interested in what you had to say but without those scores I mentioned your application ,may have wound up in his circular file too. Something about you had to impress him or he just went on to the next applicant. He has no quoto to fill and the AF hires only about 500 people per week world wide. Go back again and see where you stand.
@antares4s
@antares4s 7 лет назад
The ASVAB comes first, then medical but your attitude can cause me to drop you instantly if I wish. I am an air advisor with over 20 yrs service in education and training management. I want too know that you are serious about this and not wasting my time. That's the job. The fact that you scored 69 tells me you are good academic material but if you show me an attitude I can reject you for cause. I don't have to enlist anyone. The job is to screen out those who are not good AF material by just taking anyone. The more you impress me that you want to be here to more I will try to help you. No, I don't expect you to wear a suit and tie but neither do I expect you to look like you came out of a dumpster.I do judge on first impressions. This has nothing to do with ass-kissing but in showing me or others that you want this job.
@antares4s
@antares4s 7 лет назад
Please watch the attitude or you may cross the wrong person easily. Your MTI will pick up on attitude in a hurry which will make things tough for you very fast.
@antares4s
@antares4s 7 лет назад
Just be careful is all Jack. If you do accept a position be advised that it seems that practically everyone at JBSA-L has the ability to discharge you from the AF for what ever reason. Its called an Entry Level Separation (ESL) and they will use it from your MTI on up within the first 180 days,

My recruiter is awesome the first time I called, I had to leave a voicemail; but he called back the next day. We had a 2 hour conversation answering all of my questions, informing me on things I need to know ahead of time, and just casual conversation about school and stuff. He even call me to check up on things sometimes. When he schedule meetings to take the practice ASVAB he make sure it's good timing for me. I thought it would have been completely different since I'm a girl.
@antares4s
@antares4s 7 лет назад
A lot of recruiters are motivated about what they do and want to be helpful. But somewhere along the line you said or did something that told him that you were serious and not just wasting his time for time is one thing he does not have. As for your ASVAB this test is critical so study for it. The better you do the better your chances of being offered enlistment and or the job that you might want. Remember our minimum is 50 with most applicants scoring a 60 or better on that AFQT section. These scores are super critical. The higher you score the better.

I have not had the best of luck with Air Force Recruiters here in San Antonio! The recruiter that contacted me took about 2 weeks to respond, and when he did he 30 seconds into the phone call he disqualified me on being 7lbs overweight.even though that was my guess..I weighed myself and I need to drop 4 lbs...no big deal..but He was so quick to hang up and before he ended the call he told me I might want to consider the Army or Navy because they Take ANYBODY...What??? I am still looking for a Recruiter that is willing to help me in this process. No I am not your typical 19 or 20 year old female..I have experience and would appreciate a Professional Recruiter that wants to take time to help in jump starting my career in the USAF. My search continues #FingersCrossed

Which recruiter did you go to Sillia? I too am in San Antonio and spoke with Staff Sergeant Blue off Potranco here on the NW/W side off between 151 and 1604 and he was really helpful and felt like he actually listened. I had a bad experience with one off Ingram and left shortly after cuz I felt like he was more interested in getting back to his computer. Currently trying to join but have to lose a little weight but I suggest checking him out. Good vibes and lots of information to provide on Air Force jobs
@antares4s
@antares4s 8 лет назад
+Sillia Savage The AF is very tight on those DOD weight/height requirements. We won't even consider you if you are within 5 pounds of your maximum allowable weight. Other services do wiggle around it a bit but the AF won't. Until you meet those requirements you most likely will get the same response. As the AF only hires about 500 people per week world wide, we simply just don't need the people. Drop the weight first then apply.

jwilliamz07 Hey! If you want, you can. Or you can go on RAP, (Recruiters Assistance Program) after tech school. This will allow you to go home for free and basically have paid leave (without it coming out of your actual leave). The catch is- you'll basically be working for your recruiter while you're home. But it's still a pretty sweet deal.

I have been waiting for almost a YEAR just to get an opening to MEPS. My recruiter seems like he cares about my future, but he seems extremely unprofessional. I scored fairly high on the ASVAB and I have no medical situations preventing me from joining. The first time I tried for MEPS, my medical docs expired (after two months of waiting for an opening) and I had to sign them again while being put back on the waiting list. The closest I've gotten to an opening to MEPS was when my medical docs were accepted and I picked a date to go, but then my recruiter "forgot" that I needed to fill out a reference form. I then filled it out, turned it in, and a couple days later I was asked to retrieve my driving record. Shouldn't he know to give me all the information I need (paperwork, etc) before I further this process? Now, after everything was settled, I tried once more. Now, my credit score was preventing me from going. There was debt on my social security from when I was a minor (18 now) and thankfully I had it removed. Now I need to write a "plea bargain" to let me in, my medical docs AND driving record most likely expired, and I'll have to be put on the waiting list again, just for MEPS. Is this normal? Is there such thing as a bad recruiter? I have a feeling I'll be here for another year just trying to get in.
@bigzachful
@bigzachful 8 лет назад
I'm going through the same thing right now. My recruiter seems to be using fear as a bargaining tool to put me wherever they want when I get to MEPS. And then I lied to her about me never being on medication. I had grew up on ADHD meds and I just told her and she is telling me after all this waiting that with "all" the waivers she will have to put on for me I will most likely be devlined. And this after all the excitement she had for me to get in. The telling me to not talk to the navy or army. And the promising me it's in my best interest to wait. I have been waiting for almost a year now. And now it seems I'll be waiting another 6 months to know if I'm guaranteed to get in. I feel I screwed up by lieing. But then again, I never really know untill I went to Mel's and kept my mouth shut. It could have worked out great or really bad with a dishonorable discharge of they would do that. But I was told by a lot of people to keep my mouth shut on all this. Even before I withheld information, she has me waiting so long. I think I'm not speaking with the best recruiter for me. There is only one in my area.

Hi Amn (should be ranked higher now) Simmons appropriate the actually more accurate video than most. That was one of the most accurate videos I seen on youtube.com talking about the recruiting process and do appreciate it! I'm currently an Air Force Recruiter and yes you are correct. We are every busy and that's why we prefer appointments. 100% of us do care about are people, but because we are so busy it may not only seem like it. However, we do care and will get to each individual as soon as we can. We want to interview and answer everyone's questions; with a straight forward answer! Honestly, we not in the busy of telling lies. There is too much information and videos on the internet to even attempt to lie in today's world. For example individuals like yourself making videos, but like I said earlier accuracy. Someone people do post videos who really don't understand the process and post false information. If it seems like we aren't in your schools or don't respond to you immediately is because we are really busy. As far as other branches of the military we are about 5 to 1; if not more. Meaning there are about five other branches recruiters are covering the same area that one Air Force recruiter is covering. We are also doing one applicant's entire enlistment process; interview, paperwork, scheduling the process, the whole deal. While some branches break it into recruiters doing different parts of the process. Lastly, we are doing school visits and other types of marketing events by ourselves with often very lower expenses, because we rather spend our money on equipment and quality of life for good reason...we have the best!No matter what we are still Airman in the United States Air Force that embody the Air Force Core Values; Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellences in All We Do! Great post Amn Simmons good luck in your career sure it with be a great one; Aim High, Fly, Fight and Win!

+poppunkpizza I think that's possible... You can have an understanding with your recruiter that you don't want to leave until a certain date- and so they'll give away any job you might receive to other people until you're ready to go. I'm not 100% on this- you'll have to double check with a recruiter, because if they have a job for you- you might have to ship out, ready or not.

Hi! I have a question about my job in the Air Force. I spoke with a recruiter today. I asked her about the jobs that were available. She asked me what my choices were. I explained to her that, after looking at the Air Force website, I found 4 jobs (3 were medical-enlisted and 1 was personnel). She stated those jobs were really hard to come by and that I should wait until I meet with a job liaison after I get to boot camp in order to pick my top 8 jobs. I have read and viewed several videos now which say this is not a good idea and that I should have a job secured prior to leaving. Is this the case? I have only had experience with the Marine Corps and Army (family members are in those branches) and they are telling me to secure a job prior to leaving for boot camp. I know the Air Force is way different from those branches. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you in advance!
@WildBlueYonder
@WildBlueYonder 8 лет назад
+Christina T. Hey Christina, well you have three choices. 1. Wait around for a medical job (which are indeed hard to come by) 2. Secure a job before you go to BMT 3. Go to BMT with an "Open Aptitude", which will place you into any job in one of the four categories. For example, if you pick "open general", you can be placed into any job in the "general category". You won't have a choice in what job it is, and you'll be pretty much forced into it whether you like it or not at the completion of BMT. I would suggest that your best bet will be to secure job before you go to BMT. This way, you can at least pick your poison and know what you're getting into. Good luck, and let me know if you have any more questions

I am highly interested in joining the Air Force because I find it to be the most fulfiling in the intellegence area rather than any other branch offered. I want to continue my education in Med. As of now I am a pre med student. My recruiter asked me what job I was interested in if accepted into the AF and I responded, Surgical Service Specialist. But then she told me that wasn't possible which totally dicouraged me and even considered searching for another recruiter. I was talking to my cousin in another branch and told me to be persistent with her, but I feel like I'll annoy her by doing that which I don't want to do because I am REEEEAALLLY interested in that job. But I again, I feel like if you're willing to serve them/country and scored high on the asvab the lease they could do is accomodate you on the job of you choice. If you want you me to give it my all and excel in my job, I think the smart thing to do is try and work with me on the job I'm asking for. If I'm given a job against my will, like any human, I will react and proceed differently and I don't promise my best. They have to make it interesting for their future employee. Correct me in my way of thinking if I am wrong I am new to this whole thing. Whar do you think I should do? Thank You +WildBlueYonder
@WildBlueYonder
@WildBlueYonder 8 лет назад
+Sheeyla Pimentel Hey Sheeyla. Glad to hear of your interest in joining!! Well.. You're going to have to look at it from a different perspective. Yes, I absolutely agree with you that you should have the job that you want and the job that you would perform the best at- but that isn't always possible.. especially in this day and age with the Air Force. The reason why your recruiter said that it would be impossible for you to get that job is mainly because medical jobs are in very low demand in the AF right now, and we don't have a lot of job openings coming down. This being said, if you go into the Delayed Entry Program, you'll probably wait around and never get the job you wanted. But that doesn't mean you don't try. I would recommend putting that job down on your dream sheet as your #1, and then put similar medical jobs on there too. Finally, go open General so you have a fair chance of landing a med job. I think you should fight for what you want. Don't let them give you just any job! But still be fair and respectful! Good luck, and let me know if you have any more questions
@sheycooks2859
@sheycooks2859 8 лет назад
+WildBlueYonder I'll look at other Med jobs but that one will definitely be my #1 goal job! Is there any way switching jobs once being in the AF from the one I have choose to the one I want? Is that allowed?

@WildBlueYonder
@WildBlueYonder 9 лет назад
Jacob Bandeen About a year before you actually finish college, that way you will have time to go to MEPs, take your ASVAB, and finally be placed into the Delayed Entry Program. (everyone is in the DEP until they receive a ship date and leave for Basic) sooo instead of graduating and sitting around in the DEP, you can spend your college days in DEP instead.

Hey WildBlueYonder, again, another off topic request but as I tell people (mostly friends and coworkers) that I am in the process of joining the Air Force, they make comments about taking showers throughout BMT. Hopefully I am not the only one asking about them, but could you maybe make a video elaborating on the shower topic.
@JesseAllenJr
@JesseAllenJr 9 лет назад
Andrew Kittler What exactly is your question? You will shower naked with 25 other men/women. No one will be staring at you, everyone will be focused on trying to clean themselves as fast as possible because you dont have alot of time to waste. If you are self conscious, it's time to either grow up or choose a different career lol. You will shower everyday with your fellow airman, preferably. ( dont be that stinky guy who avoids showering because hes afraid of water )
@andrewkittler4537
@andrewkittler4537 9 лет назад
Jesse Allen By me asking a simple question that means I am self conscious? I didn't make any indications that I am "afraid" of the water or being "self conscious", just simply inquiring about what the showers are like based on some of the stories I have been told whether or not they are true... So thanks for the response, but you really didn't help at all.

You failed to clarify what information you were looking for. I made no assumptions about *you*, I referred to the thousands of recruits who *have* been insecure and afraid of water in the past. If you would communicate your intent more clearly, you'd get a response more fitting to your liking. And you still failed to clarify in your second comment what you want to know, so no one knows how to answer you.

here is the deal. Recruiters are there to do a job "recruit qualified people". They screen people to weed out people early on that do not meet standards. Such as Criminal Records, Over Weight, too low ASVAB score. Even if you kill it on the asvab dont mean you will get that dream job. The Air Force is a constantly moving organism and needs change, today they need cops, tomorrow they need aircraft mechanics, next week PJ's. etc. If you not heard this yet. hear it now. "Needs of the Air Force Comes FIRST" The recruiter gets weekly list of numbers of types of jobs they need find people to fill. They are not going to give you a computer tech job if your scores are not dialed in for that type of job, that is what that test is for to identify your weakness and strengths. Also due to the wait in line to get in, people waiting on a specific job is going to have to wait EVEN if promised job chances are you gonna have to wait MONTHS. If you show up and say I want join and I want to leave ASAP you going to have limited choices. LIke Crew Chief, or Cop, or Transportation Mechanic.. Basically the openings that are left. I joined in 1990, waited 11 months and really didnt have a specific job till I was at basic. My job luckly transformed in the years as I was in into something I enjoyed prior to joining and now in retirement continue to do it in civilian life. Recruiters are evaluated on making goal, (getting X bodies in the Air Force). Some are willing to work with you some are not interested as they have low hanging fruit elsewhere that is less work and can meet goal. Recuiter really doesnt have leeway on much. They are just screening applicants to weed out folks who cant qualify so not to waste their, or the folsk at MEPS time. I work in a Federal building the 1st floor is the MEPS station, every morning I see folks lined up ready to go. Ironically it is the same MEPS i processed through. I joke with the kids as I enter but tell them Basic Training is just a mind game, dont fight it just go with flow and get through it..

@italianmusic001gia
@italianmusic001gia 8 лет назад
Talk to your recruiter first and express that. To join special forces you need to be physically fit and you will be administered a fitness test to see if you are qualified for it. You will have to get a job reservation into the special forces job you want before going to BMT. The recruiter will clear those doubts
@kylerheron9328
@kylerheron9328 7 лет назад
Well, for 1, Special Forces is actually it's own thing. It's the Green Beret. Common mistake, just don't go into an air force recruiter office saying "I wanna do special forces" haha. also, the air force has several special operations forces. PJ, CCT, Special Tactics, etc. just let them know when you talk to then and they'll tell you what can be done. however, it's super competitive, and it requires a LOT of dedication. just be prepared. (I'm not talking from personal experience, I'm speaking from research I've done, things my brother - who is in the air force - has told me, and information I've gained from talking with recruiters and other air force officials.)

It's more of the opposite. Air force is more like a Prius and the Army/Marine are more like Bugattis. People drive Prius because it saves gas but there's no pride in driving one. Just like the Air Force, people join because it's the most relax, best living condition, and easiest branch but I wouldn't have much pride in telling people I'm an Airman. Enough though a Bugatti gets about 8 MPG, you feel proud to drive one. Just like the Army/Marine, people join because they're the toughest branches and living quarters sucks but in the end, they're proud to call themselves Soldiers/Marines.

Dany Gonzales Hey Dany, well, the fact that you already have a physical test scheduled shows that your recruiter does care about you. If he didn't, you'd probably never hear from him again after the first time you spoke with him. Very few recruiters don't care, and those are the ones who would've thrown your file in the trash as soon as they saw that you weren't an easy fit. The fact that you have a GED, you're single with dependents, AND are 34 means that your recruiter does care- and he/she probably went through some hoops for you :). I would suggest to just keep your head up and make sure you're meeting all the requirements to join. Good luck to you sir!

studpum Trust me, a recruiter will feel better if you show up unannounced than if you just keep emailing him. The process can be frustrating, I had to switch recruiters twice because they wouldnt keep in contact. But you have to suck it up and prove to them you are an adult and ready to take the initiative to make things happen. Pack up what the recruiter asked you to send him, and bring it to his office. He wont be upset, and you dont need to feel guilty or rude. He will be glad you showed up. If all else fails, contact another recruiter and inform him of what is happening and he will reach out to your first recruiter. Hell, I had to have the COMMANDER of my recruiters squadron actually get on his ass about communicating with me. We havent had any issues since.

+antares4s Yea I was kinda thinking the same but he's been working a bit with me as MSGT to myself rather than recruiter to myself if that makes sense. Plus I'd hate myself for not even trying.
@antares4s
@antares4s 8 лет назад
You must select at least 4 jobs plus an Open Area for which you qualify. The more jobs you select the more options you have for they can only offer you jobs that you circled or that Open Area. This probably what he is referring to. As to you getting any of those jobs if you wash out, he has no way of knowing what will be available if anything that you selected. That puts you into the Open Classification which means that the AF puts you where they have the greatest need within that Open area. Right now that means Security Forces for they are very short handed because of deployments. I still recommend starting over with another Recruiter as this one isn't working in your best interest as far as I can read here.

Basically recruiters and MTI's are not long term AFSC's. Recruiters are simply salesmen for the Air Force. Personally, they couldn't give a rats a$$ about you. If you don't join, tomorrow they'll sign up another swinging dick! They have so many quoters to maintain their job, and consequently will promise you the moon. If you want a particular field, but the air forces demand is low, they'll try to steer you into something else. They all lie to your face. And you wait and wait and wait and wait. I know USAF '68-'72 Sgt. (E-4).
