Hey JC! Long time fan of your channel. This old video is the gift that keeps on giving! I just watched it all the way through to get ready for my upcoming six week visit which is only two weeks away! Thanks for the tips.
retirecheapjc Hey JC. Thanks again for this video (and all your videos). I’m 2 weeks into my trip and still in Bangkok. My Columbia PFG shirts are my “go to” shirts for when I am out and about. Well worth the money. Thanks again.
Hey JC i can see you are really living the dream i really enjoy your videos keep up the good work you have answered a lot of things i have wanted to know thanks.....
We now have machines that you get filtered water for 2 Liters for 1 Baht! Hydration important with or without alcohol consumption. Alcohol just adds to the problem. Luckily we have coconut water to help get back those electrolytes!
Thank you so much for this very useful information. I was very ill in Thailand having contracted celitis from a bite. The only downside mind. Loved the place so much I want to go back.
Freeze small bottles of water, and place on hot spots. Sleep with them , and use for pets also. Place in plastic bags, and use a thin cloth To wrap. Place on your seat, like a pillow.
acajudi100 And where will you freeze these? :) In your hotel room? The freezers in the small mini-fridges aren't big enough. Maybe if you have a house or apartment. What is even better are the "wraps" that have blue ice and are flexible. These usually are used for sports injuries etc.
I will be 73 in October, and not on any medication or medical problems. grandma did the same, and lived to be 106 in great shape. You can die at any age.
One way to deal with the heat which i see you didn't mention and it really helps to people who like there beer, When order a beer don't drink out the bottle, ask for a glass and ice,
Many thanks for this excellent presentations: you are a natural for TV. You packed in a huge amount of information into a very small space, and did it with a mixture of charm and intelligence. You also have a calm manner, but your delivery is pacey too. Oh and by the way you are a nice guy which makes it even better.
I brought half a dozen neck coolies on my trip. Locals were curious about them and gave most away. As far as clothing, Columbia is ok, but I switched over the Eddie Bauer.... especially since I have an EB outlet nearby here in FL. I've notice many locals, especially in Bangkok wear long sleeves. A good practice if you can get used to it.
@chronicreader Yea I had the same problem a while back in Laos. It was so hot there I duct taped plastic around any thing I could in my hotel room to try and keep the cool air in. Chiang Mai is like going to the Mall compared to that!
must admit JC the way you present things. brings the idea of perhaps living in thailand if not permanently, at least a year or two. a good prospect. anyhoo regardign coconut water. weve got this here in the states. it IS pretty good. i must admit. while working a 14hr charity race here in tn, i went through maybe a half dozen 16oz cans of it. and guess what it IS a prduct of thailand. :)
great and informative video. I have start using your advice already, especially my wife, can't stand Thai's heat! Keep up the good work, and the video.
That is exactly right. In open shady areas or around the sea it is cooler and much better than inland with no air movement. Use the air cond only when needed or the contrast is too much. I notice I do not feel the heat as much as people I see who have just arrived so I guess we do get used to it. Thais don't sweat at all!!
Thanks for making these videos JC. I appreciate all of the good information. We're planning to visit Thailand for our first time in a few months, and hopefully retire there if all goes well.
Hi Mr. JC. Thank you for sharing. I loves all your videos. It is so helpful and informative. You were very careful in choosing your foods. You ate the sliced fresh Pineapple. And you make sure to stay hydrated. These are some of the things that help keep you from getting food poisoning or sick. Fruits has strong acid that kills bacteria. One sweet Orange eaten after a full stomach does the same. I love Thai green Papaya salad. It is one of my favorite Thai food. I think the sticky steamed Rice often goes with steamed Duran fruit with Coconut cream and sugar. It is South East Asia most favorite dessert. But it is not good to eat during the Summer months. Best eaten in the Winter. Foods are so cheap in South East Asia. I loves street foods.
ukniko I know what he is doing. It is you who don't get it. I am only praising him for promoting Thailand. What he did do help expose Thailand and it's culture to the world. And you don't see that? You think he is bad because he is doing something for himself? You should be picking on those who does nothing for others and doing bad to other. What is it you have against this man? I don't get people like you.
ukniko I make nothing from any product, service or business mentioned in ANY video and never will. The member site income supports the maintenance of the sites and our charitable contributions. The dues don't even go to me but to Thais. Interesting how people project things as if they really know what they have no clue about. But that's OK. It is the world we live in these days. :)
ukniko I make no money from what you see or the members site. The money doesn't go to me. And the people who get it donate it to our charities we support, the web sites infrastructures and helps with some travel costs. I find it very interesting how people jump to conclusions with no facts.
Great Video... I have been to Thailand 10 times and yes, the HEAT and humidity is something ! (which is why I had 2 air conditioners installed in my ONE bedroom condo in Meng Jai area of Bangkok) Keep up the great work on your videos and TV show !
Lived in Florida my whole life and thought the Thailand heat would be nothing new to me. It kicked my ass! Florida can't compare in heat but otherwise the weather is very similar good video.
Its a good idea to have cold water running over the veins on the backside of your forearms, cause it will cool you down immidiately, if you are about to have a heathstroke.
That ice cream is the best i have ever had, especially with sticky rice. One tip, if you are feeling a little down in the heat, lick sweat off your arm, if you cannot taste salt, you need some. Electrolytes will pick you up but the body still needs a little sodium chloride.Best way is from soi sauce and nam pla (fish sauce) Good work JC. but how about a video of the dark side of Thailand.
Yep they make people pay for it here, that's why southeast Asia is appealing , I also have Brazilian friends here and Thai friends, I'm trying get as much info as I can. I'm 45 and can't hardly save anything out here. I'm checking out your membership section as well.
Question for you JC I am a Black Man from the States. How would they treat me since I am naturally dark. I watched almost all your videos about Thailand and I love it. So give me your honest opinion. Please don't sugar coat anything thanks
I would also add about clothing that, aside from dressing light clothes (both in terms of fabric and color), less is not necessarily better (well, unless you are a hot girl). Watch the street vendors and people living in India, they wrap themselves up pretty thoroughly, not only because of local moral codes but also to protect themselves from the burning sun.
Not my nature, but rising early to do things may help. Also, I commented in another video that I am 70 and rode a bycicle all over Chiang Mai, Feb. thru June. Hot yes, but no troubles. Just in better shape than that young kid J.C. Ha-Ha. Robert Burnett.
Great video, you are a natural and gifted presenter Sir. Please can you offer some advice on mosquitoes? I am coming back to Thailand very soon, but last time I was there I caught celalitus and ended up in hospital on an iv drip for 8 days. How do you ex pats cope with them, they eat me alive? I had all my jabs for everything else before I came.
@retirecheapjc very coo,l they also have a wal mart brand compresstion tee for about $8 under armor is about $30. and a brand called field and stream has the same type fishing shirt you were talking about and is super lite. feels like wearing a cool brease
afaik what I got here although it was canned. I didn't tast sugar to be honest. at first it tasted kind of bland. but it grew on me. Thailand is sounding more and more doable. thanks to your straight forward advice. perhaps Cambodia on the thai border. id have to gain employment. you made emntion of it being easier to start a business in Cambodia.
@NunyaDBusiness1 Thanks. I thought I would try and cover a few different places to make it more interesting. I try to have fun. If not then what's the use, right?
If i am out and about during the day time in Pattaya I will stop off are at a bar. Which means resting your legs and getting a fan cool down, cold towel and a bottle of water for 50 baht.
Another great video JC. But the fact is some people will need to decide if they are healthy enough to cope with the heat. OK Chiang Mai has cooler temperatures as you have stated, but the rest of Thailand is HOT! For yourself you seem pretty fit and healthy for your age group, but not everyone is and a walk down the street in the heat will really knock some older people about.
Missing info when i wrote the message. You dont need to have running water running over the veins (you dont always have much water near you), , All cold stuff that can lower your temperature is helpful, fx. ice of any kind. If you have a juicy fruit near, fx. an orange.
JC thanks for this valuable information. I am really light complected and need to wear sunscreen; do local stores stock a lot of this item or will I need to order thru the net? I use a lot. These tips should make my trips and eventual residency in Chiang Mai more comfortable. I was always curious about your clothes and love your hats; I will diffidently bring some Columbia sport wear with me. I really hope to meet you some day; your videos are always insightful, informative and hopeful.
I would appreciate some suggestions for clothing and brands you have found that are good for "wicking" and quick drying. Are they available in Thailand or do you have to buy over the internet? Thanks for all your great educational vids.
Also not to have dark skin. It shows a lower class in their society so the actually cover up to stay white and ALL cosmetics and creams have whiteners in them as well. And we want tans!!
retirecheapjc I know that's an amazing cultural difference. White people like to tan... dark people like paler shades - Let's not forget the ultimate truth: BEAUTY COMES FROM WITHIN!
Thank you, I am going to look up your sight as well. I live in Hawaii with perfect temperatures so thanks for the tips, I will probably visit Thailand in the winter months, is it still very humid in koh samui or Phuket ect. at that time of year. In looking for a cheap vacation since I spend most of my money with high cost of living.
@keenok100 The weather is similar to Florida more than California for sure. Anytime you are near the sea breeze or like you say up in the mountains it is pleasant. Bangkok... yikes! Hot and humid for sure!
it gets warm but most tourists are just that tourists. its not like you have to work in the heat. lets face it tourists are relaxing with a cold drink near pools or beaches in hotels with ac. gee its a hard life huh.
@gregybrown1 In the South they would be better off on the beach catching the cool breezes. Bangkok A/C during the summer months. Chiang Mai, go to the beach and catch the cool breezes from Feb. 15th thru April 15th. See no problem!
retirecheapjc Right, some are 1 liter per baht, some are 2 liter per baht. Regardless, one can fill a 1-liter bottle for 1 baht. Much cheaper thanat "Seben."
Hey JC! I've been shopping Columbia in getting ready for my CM trip. What kind of shoes do you recommend? I remember wearing some kind of hiking sandals in Hawai'i. Are those generally acceptable in Thailand? What do the locals wear? Thanks bro!
@jonesingforsilver Remeber to pack light. Laundry is REALLY cheap here. 30 Baht a Kg. $1.00 for about 2.5 pounds. Also buying clothes here is cheap. I bout a pair of shorts the other day for 80 Baht. Less than $3!
Great advice. I live in Phoenix, Arizona, so I'm used to the dry heat and loved being in Fort Lauderdale Florida during August. Question: Can you buy brands such as Columbia, Patagonia, North Face, Nike, Adidas,,etc in Thailand? If so do you find the prices less than in the states? Thanks again.
I can clearly hear from this video, how much your Thai language has improved since you posted it. I noticed you kept saying, "Kob kun mai krup". You possibly know now, the word "mai" at the end of a sentence, refers to, if you're asking someone a question.
Here are a couple more tips for dealing with the heat, At night when it's still 30deg C indoors and you want to get to sleep, drape a wet sheet over your body .This will cool you. and secondly if you want to ride your motorbike in the sunshine, cover the plastic seat with a towel so you don't burn yor legs.
I have to tell you JC I must clarify... There are 3 seasons... HOT DAMN HOT and Rainy season where it is hot if not raining. I am in Si Chompu in khon kaen. Not coastal but not too bad overall. Also, notice the difference between rainy season hot and the HOT season. just my humble opinion
@retirecheapjc I have heard about people doing well online, selling to overseas etc. I'm keen for practical ideas, and want to work hard. Just dont see the point in doing a job that has bored me for so long here & continuing in Thailand. Hope you have some advice. Thanks mate.
No that's really not very good social etiquette. It's always best to look around at the culture wherever you are and try to adapt and fit in. I see foreigners go into bars and restaurants without shirts and it's considered rude and unattractive to Thai people. Having said that, if you're around a beach community can usually wander around in the daytime shirtless just have one available if you gonna go into any kind of establishment.
@@EscapetoThailand Thanks for answering my question. And yes, I should have been more clear in my original inquiry. I would be walking around top less when I'm outside. But would wear a shirt once I enter any establishment. Not just for cultural reasons but also because with the A/C I would then be too cold topless. I will be visiting Thailand this April for the first time and I'm from a northern climate so I figure the heat will be a shock to me. Hence, I want to be topless as much as possible and in the shade. Now, I also understand why tropical cultures have a siesta during the hottest time of the day :)
