In this episode I am finally up the learning curve enough on 3D printing to design and print my first custom design: a GreyLightning Maker Token! I show a quick overview of my design process, from Adobe Illustrator (drawing) to Blender (3D modeling) to Chitubox (slicing).
I show how to add colors to clear resin and adjust the exposure settings to get a successful print.
Then I show a quick and effective way to paint the tokens to make the design pop!
I will be releasing soon two other videos referenced in this one: a deep dive on creating the GreyLightning token from scratch, and a video about FEP film problems and possible causes, as well as how to change the FEP film.

The use of the painting technique was a great tip! I'll have to try that

David, that is an example of how sometimes my old-time, traditional crafting skills pay off! Every technique you learn along the way becomes potentially useful somewhere down the road.

Alternatively, you can right-click on the curve and select Convert to Mesh. From there, you can press 'tab' to enter edit mode, 'a' to select all and 'e' to extrude. To leave edit mode, press 'tab' again. More steps than your method, but I thought I'd share in case the solidify modifier ever fails. To make orienting models easier, right-click->Set Origin->Center of Mass(Volume). From there, you can use 'n' to bring up the Transform panel and set the X,Y,Z location to whatever you want. I tend to use 0,0 for x and y and change z based on the height of the primary object. This works fairly well as Blender tends to add new shapes at the origin. And for simple things, I like to use tinkercad as the interface is fairly simple. It would be a great candidate for maker coins as it can import SVGs, there are no additional steps to convert them to 3D objects and has an assortment of ready made objects for a variety of designs. It also works anywhere as it is web based and free. For me, I've found the quickest path to get from A->Z is to use the simplest tools I can to get the job done and if that requires a few programs to get it done, so be it, but they are all programs I am comfortable using while I try to improve my understanding of more formidable options but I have to say for creating custom dice, Blender wins hands down.

So many things to say! First, I'm heading on vacation and learning more about Blender was my single work objective, but now I'm going to add Tinkercad because I too like the easiest way from A to Z. Second, some of the svgs I've imported to Blender have spikes in the z direction, and I've found plenty of people with the same problem but noone with a solution. Have you run into this? That's why I'd love an alternative to solidify, though I've heard converting to mesh can have another set of issues. Third, custom dice are high on my list of things to make, so I really need to get good at Blender. Can you recommend any particular tutorial sources? hmx, you have been and continue to be a huge help for me, thank you!!

I believe I have encountered some oddities when importing SVGs and when I do, I usually go into edit mode and massage things until they work. I've not found a correlation as to when a SVG import might mess up but the Clean up functions under Mesh in Edit mode can help fix most oddities I've encountered. But there are plenty of other oddities that pop-up from time to time. As for references, my go to is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nCowrvfOr3Q.html for all those pesky angles when rotating to place objects flat on the face. Unfortunately those angles only work for your standard shapes but a neat cheat is to export the stl, open it in chitubox and use the place on face, save the stl and reopen in blender. If you don't mind a slight bit of imperfection, you can rotate it in blender to get close enough but I don't trust myself to not be off by a degree or 2 and I know it will bug me in the long run.

hmx, I think Tinkercad is definitely the way to go for something as simple as tokens. The svgs causing problems in Blender seem to be the ones generated by image traces. Things I've drawn with the pen tool seem to work fine. I definitely need to get up the learning curve in Blender so I can design everything there and minimize the need to import files. Thanks for all your help!!

Nicely done! I am glad to see you getting comfortable with 3D modelling and Blender. Pretty soon you'll be molding and casting sets to sell on Etsy. 😉

Thanks, Born Again -- the learning curve is steep!! I just know the only way I'll learn it is by tackling progressively harder projects that I'm truly motivated to complete. I can sit and watch hours and hours of videos and retain nothing. Even the simplest of tasks in Blender have me running to the internet to figure out how to do it, but I feel like I'm making progress!

Great video as usual! Have you taken a look at Autodesk Fusion 360 for 3D modeling? It's a parametric modeling tool used for mechanical design but of course can be used to model anything you can think of. I use Solidworks professionally and find Fusion easier to understand than Blender. Fusion is also a full CAM package and can even send a model directly to your slicer automatically (I do FDM printing and use Simplify 3D for slicing.) I can also program my XCarve right inside Fusion. The only thing I can't do directly is output files for the Ruida laser controller but it isn't too difficult to output dxf files for use in Lightburn. Autodesk doesn't make it very clear but you can use Fusion for free as a hobbyist and if you feel you need a commercial license it's $500 a year which is dirt cheap in the CAD / CAM world.

FYI, just for grins I installed Chitubox and tested it with Fusion and am happy to report it works. You just right click on the model in the Fusion workspace, select Save as STL, click the box that says "Send to 3D print utility" and point it to Chitubox. Chitubox opens with the model already imported.

MC, I actually have a copy of Fusion 360 too. I think I went towards Blender because 3D animation and art are also interests of mine and I thought if I learned enough I could start designing skins for Fortnite 😀! Actually they are both great, and complex, tools. I do think Fusion 360 is stronger for engineering (like the parametrics) and Blender is better for artists, and I skew more to the artistic side. I really appreciate your comment though, this is a lot of great information and could really help viewers who are trying to choose the best tool for them. It was very thoughtful of you to write it!

@@GreylightMay I agree with you, Fusion (and the like) is better for engineering / mechanical design and tools like Blender are better for artistic things. I'm the opposite of you, I have very, very little artistic ability (although I've had my moments) but have spent a good 20 years or so coming up with mechanical solutions for the manufacturing industry. And yes this type of software can be complex but once you get comfortable you find the tool set that works for you and can get by pretty well!

Hi! Thanks a lot for this video, really helpful. I bought a gelli plate like yours and the finish of the paint on the token is pretty rough. Do you have any tips on how to make the paint looks likes it's not peeling off put applied evenly?
@GreylightMay
@GreylightMay 9 месяцев назад
Put a line of paint at the top, just pull a little off with the brayer and really work it in multiple directions to get it evenly distributed on the brayer. Apply several thin coats. It helps if the surface is not shiny so the paint adheres. I sand a little if the surface is too slick. There are so many variables though: the surface of the brayer, the thickness of the paint, the texture of the painting surface.... It's always a bit trial and error!

Nice work. I made a YPR 765 model (for Team Yankee - it is a Dutch IFV) in blender that started as a really well done free model I found on a web site, but simply could not be printed because of mesh problems. So I used blender and the model to created another model that was a bit simpler but had a mesh that could be successfully printed. But after that, I pretty much dumped blender for freecad. I did that because I am not particularly artistic and blender seems really good at that but is much more of a pain for doing parameter based drawings. Most of what I make now are custom bases for edge lit acrylic art and the parameter based method works best for me. I do like what you are doing here though, so I might give that a shot in both programs and see which one I like better for that. I have been using the glowforge for tokens, but it would be nice to have some things a little more 3d.

Thanks, Scott. I plan on getting a laser cutter this fall, probably a Glowforge, and I'm looking forward to doing some projects that combine both technologies, because they definitely have their own strengths. I think the combination could produce some really interesting projects!

Romeo, these were done on a Creality LD002R but I just checked Amazon and couldn't find it. I think they've already moved on to a new model with a mono screen. They are a good brand, as is Anycubic and Elegoo. Any of their resin printers could do this project.

Right? My makerspace had a box of scrap acrylic disks from the cutter that made for a nice bag of game tokens.
