Great video Ben. One little winter tip from a Wyoming guy. Nitrile surgical type goves... no insulating value at all but they will keep your hands dry! Perfect for under fingerless gloves or by themselves if its like an "inbetween" day. A lot of the time I can wear these in place of insulated gloves.
May I suggest that you keep a towel, no not a bath towel around your waist , but a small hand towel in your pocket to dry your hands immediately after they get wet - especially if you catch a fish or retrieve a fly from a snag. Remember, wet hands are cold hands
@@sabiangriffin3713 they’re as much fly fishing as using an indicator. Truth is if you start becoming one of those “it’s not fly fishing” people you have to move to one of the small sections of England w/ douche bags like yourself.
@@oak8728 Just because you use a fly, doesn't make it fly fishing. You aren't casting, therefore it's not really fly fishing. Here's why. If you have a heavier fly and a lighter spin casting rod, and you put the fly on the spin caster, is that fly fishing? No, I don't think so.
I'd add to this that on top of your base layer and between outer layer it's really nice to wear something slippery. It makes it easy to slip in and out of waders, put on or take off your jacket, or even add another layer if you need too. Without the slippery material, changing your outer layers can sometimes cause some inner layers to bunch up or come untucked and compromise your nice warm layering.
Last video I had a beer with you. It was a special time. Today I found time to watch at work and I’m not sure the boss is going to be ok with joining you...until this evening, my friend! Stay warm!
My last trip out in Colorado was in the middle of January and the river was still frozen but it warmed just enough to start melting a few stretches of open water I can cast to. Nailed 3 browns in a little sliver of flowing water while standing on a sketchy snow bank using a black stone and hares ear. And one of my best times in winter was on a lake I will not mention, ice fishing with jigs tipped with a piece of nightcrawler and knocked the crap out rainbows anywhere from 10"-18" and yes I did keep a few and they were delicious. That ice can get sketchy though especially when you can hear it gurgling underneath your feet. Love your vids stay huge! Oh and uh tightlines
Nailed this one! The fish don't fight as hard but you usually have the river to yourself (except the South Platte). Yes, not enough snow so far this year.
Good call on the layering, I have found if you keep your inner thighs, half way between your knee and your......warm, it makes a huge difference. I think there are some HUGE arteries that run down that part of your leg....but I’m no doctor.
Ben, one thing you forgot to mention. NO COTTON! as a Great Lakes “lake run rainbow” guy I know from having worn cotton in the cold. Cotton does not wick moisture. You must wear all wool or synthetic layers. If not your cotton will end up soaked with your own sweat and you will get cold.
I’m getting off work and fixin to layer up and go fishing! It’s about 70 here in central Tx, so the layers basically underwear, pants, and a T-shirt. But a fronts hitting tonight and going to be 54 tomorrow Brrrr! 🥶 Might have to add a long sleeve then..Lol! Beautiful place you’re at there! Your Huge videos are 2nd to None! 👍👍 (I’m real curious about the fox in the block of ice?! 🤔 and definitely need some of them Cowboy boots😂). Anyway..Thanks a ton for making Mondays a Huge event for us! Take care Ben..Cheers to ya! 🍻
Lol. So glad I stumbled across your last video. I love your humour and I'm looking forward to learning a lot and/or being entertained. I'm going to employ some of these tips shortly when I go try to catch some walleye in my local river - not on a fly rod, though. Hopefully I'll be buying one of those this Spring.
Drinking beer keeps you warm too. In the uk we call it a beer coat. Have a night out on the town in northern England in the winter and you’ll see what I mean. 🍺💪
Huge pro tip revival : hand warmers : for your phone! Pro tip extension : conservation, ethic and warmth. Fish slime is an excellent freezing agent for your gloves. Carry a rag or a small towel for your hand. You can go back and smell it on skunk days!
I hope you make a video about ice fishing. There is not enough snow to ski so I went to my local reservoir today and found that the water at the inlet was still flowing, not frozen. I was able to catch a few trout for dinner, and certainly had more fun stalking them than the guys sitting in their huts did. I also hope you make a lot of videos in Florida. This summer I plan to go to Florida and fish the mangrove forests from a kayak or jon boat.
Layers are the way to go specially here in the south. After 10am the air gets up to 65 to 70 degrees and you'll start sweating. And sweating is the worst thing you can do when trying to stay warm
You should film some ice fishing videos as well Ben. Just picture the beer at the end lasting all day. Plus then maybe I can learn which flies to use on the ice. Lmao
Great tips , the one about waders with boots built in the best . Recently got off the Henry’s Fork mid to low 20s all day drug the boat out over an ice shelf at the ramp ( lucky to get it out ) just getting dark go to take my waders off boots and laces frozen 🥶 my buddy has the waders with the boots built in no problem off they come . He had to help me chisel my boots off to get my waders off , very enlightening . Living in MT is great like CO but when January and February roll around it’s thoughts of Tarpon and Permit , somewhere warm . No snow yet , does not bode well for or rivers this year not to mention fires 🔥 that beer looked really good but only 7:30am , but then I thought what would I do in Mexico? Cheers :-)
Speaking of Florida, can you recommend a huge guide in the Mosquito Lagoon area? I'll be down there at the end of March and am thinking about booking a half day with someone.
Any truth to using PAM on your guides to keep the ice from forming on them? Will that mess with your fly line and tippet? Can’t afford to go to Florida, so it’s winter fly fishing for me🥶
Damn chakras are really what makes me avoid winter fly fishing - pompom or no. That and I'm the "fat guy that falls into rivers a lot" which is better to do in summer, but I probably should get out and stay huge while being huge and maybe catch a fish in winter.
Doooood! You wanna be warm in the winter when you're fishing? Carry a flask of tequila! Put down those freezing cold beers! Simple. You're welcome, whippersnapper.
