Read all about the Longan Fruit here on my website: www.inthekitchenwithmatt.com/...
In this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I will show you how to eat the Longan fruit. What does Longan taste like? Well, I will also do a taste test. First of all,, what is Longan? The longan is a tree that produces small fruit and it belongs to the soapberry family. The lychee, rambutan, and several others belong to this family as well. They all look different on the outside of the fruit but on the inside, they all have a similar clear whitish flesh.
They originated in between Myanmar and Southern China. Now they are grown in places like China, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Australia, and even the United States. They actually will grow in Arizona where I live.
How do they taste? The Longan fruit is sweet and juicy and reminds me of a mix between a grape and a pear. With a tropical flavor to it. It is a pretty cool fruit with a pretty unique taste!
Where can you find them here in the United States? Check your local Asian Market, chances are they will have some in their produce section.

When I first meet my soon to be wife in the Philippines, I was relaxing, and she decided that she would feed me some Longan fruits, now I had never had them before, but they were very good and so she was being funny and shelling and plopping them in my mouth as fast as she could ok, fun! but then later they made me as sick as a toad eating dog, just too much! But 12 years later we are still together, and she is a blessing.

How do you get to know which one is ripe? I mean is the color any indicator of the level of ripeness?
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 10 месяцев назад
They start out as green so when they are totally brown/beige and all the green is gone and they look "plump" and the outer shell will be dry and brittle, they are ready to eat. There are usually so many of them on the tree that it is easy to pick just one to test it. These do not ripen off the tree, so if you find them in the store they should all be ripe.

There is no one "correct" way. You can eat them however you want.

I still don’t know what it taste like because I don’t know what the other fruit mentioned taste like so this was no help

Hi Melissa, It is extremely sweet, kinda grape-like, and juicy. Which I mention in the video, did you miss that? But sorry, that is how most fruits are described compared to something else. If you Google what does longan taste like? That is pretty much what everyone else says as well and yes, they compare it to a rambutan or lychee. This is because those fruits are all in the same family and are related. Also sometimes fruits just have their own unique taste, but yea, juicy, grape-like. Some people say it has a bit of weird funk to it too, but not unpleasant, haha.

@@inthekitchenwithmatt Thank you for your reply I understand the texture was grape like, as far as the taste goes I’ve never eaten the other two fruits as I had said in my reply. So I have nothing to compare it to. I did look it up on Google and could not find a comparison to a food I’ve actually tasted before.

@@melissamoffett6244 You are very welcome! Melissa, that's just it, not just the texture, but the taste is also grape-like. That is most likely the closest comparison to make if you haven't tried the other fruits. It's like a tropical grape with a tad bit of pleasant funk, haha.

you've probably already tried them by now, but I think they actually have a decently mild flavor, and wouldn't have thought to compare to a grape... tastes more similar to cantaloupe to me.

“And the lichee” do you mean Lychee?
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 10 месяцев назад
There are many spellings for lychee (litchi, lichi, liechee, lizhi, li zhi, or lichee). Lychee is the most common probably depending on where you live, with that said, it sounds like you were reading the CC, That is auto generated by RU-vid, I don't have time to go back and read through all of them to make sure they are 100% accurate. But in this case lichee is another way to spell lychee.

Yeah it looks kind of like that too! But it is harder to tell with the camera, in person it is so easy to see the giant seed in the middle, which definitely looks like an eye.

Longan is delicious, but you can just crack it open by pinching small crack and then press. No need to put that much effort stripping off the skin like that, because you also risk contaminating the fruit with your dirty fingers.
