Hey Guys and Galls!
This is a tutorial/how to video about checking and finding blown fuses in your vehicle. In this video, I will teach you how to use a test light to quickly check and find blown fuses in your car.
Firstly I talk through the basics of setting up the test light and checking a good fuse and also what a blown fuse will look like when tested with a test light.
Then finding a blown fuse in the vehicle comes next, you need to find out what isn't working, say the cigarette lighter is not supplying power to your phone charger. Then you will need to locate the location of the fuse box in your vehicle and use the fuse diagram to test and replace the faulty fuse. By using the test light you can quickly and easily test any fuse. Remember that the cigarette lighter socket in a car is often turned on and off with the ignition, so to test the fuse for the cigarette lighter correctly you will need to turn the ignition on!
When removing fuses from the holder you need to ensure you turn off the ignition before removing, to avoid any potential damage. If a fuse continuously blows within a short matter of time do not keep replacing it! You need to be checking for a potential short circuit in the wiring or you are continuously overloading the circuit with too much current than it can handle!
Please ask any questions in the comments!

I think that removing the fuse and performing a continuity test with a multimeter would be a safer and more reliable way of testing fuses. You will not always have power going to the fuse and you may not want to put a load on the circuit. Any cheap multimeter should be able to do this.

@Damnit Bobby little late on the reply, but if you havent gotten a reply, for some of the fuses they wont light up at all unless your key is in. As an example that he used, ghe cigarettes lighter fuse will be blank because it is not in use unless your key is switched on (not turning over the engine just switched on) so turn your key to on, and then try it again and it should work.

Nick--Early in the video (0:51 in) , you determined one of the fuses (orange in color) was blown. You went to great effort with an on-screen warning to replace the blown fuse with an identical fuse to prevent problems (including an electrical fire). You then show us, on camera, that you replaced it with a GREEN fuse, which has a different amp rating. Can you tell us what occurred? Thanks; great video otherwise.

great video man.seems sample but not everyone knows ,especially if you didnt grow up around cars. what do you mean by overloading the fuses.ive been havin some issue s with an am2 fuse blowing.how woukd i know if its over loaded?
@howtonick2803
@howtonick2803 7 лет назад
Thanks for the comment Juan. If a fuse is continuously blowing then there is possibly a short circuit in the line or the load on the circuit from a consumer is too much and is overloading the capabilities of the wiring/fuse and blowing it. The am2 fuse is an ignition fuse i believe and could possibly be blowing due to a short circuit in the wiring.
@1juanmtz21
@1juanmtz21 7 лет назад
HowToNick ok ok.now how would you know when that is the case.how would you test it.? my toyolta tercel keeps blowing the am2 fuse.i feel it could be in part because of an aftermarket alarm that is installed. when the fuse is replaced it usually blows when i press the alram button.
@howtonick2803
@howtonick2803 7 лет назад
Hey Juan. It sounds like it is most probably related to the aftermarket alarm. To find the short circuited wire you would need to check power supply to the alarm unit, earth to the body to the unit then carry out a continuity check on the remaining signal wires to find which one is damaged. Alternatively trace the wires visually as best you can and check for any splits or damage to the wiring or insulation. That would be the best way to start. Start with the alarm button wiring if it seems to blow after pressing the button and then the wiring for the alarm unit. Hope that helps! Cheers, Nick

First of all, I think you should tell more about correct locations that we can choose for ground terminal other than the battery negative terminal. This also holds when checking fuse in cabin as you show at 2:52. Any locations that are directly connected to the chassis frame are good to be used for ground terminal. Now, what is the position of ignition switch for checking the starter fuse : ON or Start ? I have just checked with both position, the tester lamp didn't light on this fuse. But it lighted on almost every other fuses, in cabin and engine compartment. My car can start though.
@howtonick2803
@howtonick2803 6 лет назад
Hey Lex, good point. Any bare metal point that is connected to the chassis or body is generally fine to use when checking fuses with the test lamp. Your starter fuse would only have power when you are in the cranking position on the ignition switch. Cheers, Nick
@lexsoft3969
@lexsoft3969 6 лет назад
+HowToNick So when the engine is running, the test lamp should light on the starter fuse, right ? On my car, the test lamp didn't light up when engine is running. I am thinking to replace it to prevent undesired things.
@howtonick2803
@howtonick2803 6 лет назад
Hey Lex, It should only light up when you are "cranking" so when you can hear the starter motor turning. If you are unsure if its ok or not it cant hurt to replace it anyway. Thanks!

@howtonick2803
@howtonick2803 4 года назад
You sure can test a fuse with a continuity tester. You should have continuity through a good fuse and a blown fuse will have no continuity.

I would think if it is lighting up when clamped on the positive terminal and your touching earth it should work the correct way as well unless there is an issue with the test lamp. Cheers, Nick

Hi William, you can clamp the test lamp earth to any clean (not painted) metal point on the vehicle. Cheers
@msgeen
@msgeen 5 лет назад
The metal contact on the fuse is always the positive and you only need to attach the test light clip to any ground. You don't need to connect the wire directly to the battery. edit: I just realized this is a 1 year old question. lol

@howtonick2803
@howtonick2803 6 лет назад
Danielle Sound Hi Danielle, have a look in the owners manual to find fuse box locations. If you dont have an owners manual try google. Usually the fuseboxes are located under the dash, behind the glove box or in the left/right kick panels. Hope that helps a bit! Cheers, Nick 😀
@howtonick2803

@howtonick2803
@howtonick2803 3 года назад
The fuses may not have power supply all of the time. Some fuses aren't used. If there is no power going to either side of the fuse then there is either an issue with the fuses power supply or there is not meant to be any power supply to the fuse and it is just unused.

Not all fuses will have a constant power supply and may only be powered up when under different conditions. So to check these you may need to do a continuity test with the multi-meter to make sure the fuse is ok.

so the engine must be running in order to test the fuses?
@howtonick2803

In some cases yes the engine will need to be running or the ignition on to check some fuses. It may be necessary to check the fuse with the ignition off and if there is no power try with the ignition on or engine running. Just remember to turn off the ignition when removing any fuse. Cheers, Nick :D
