Ultimate handyman! I have said this before! You are Top Man, I have just this afternoon replaced a light fitting in my grandson's bedroom following your precise instructions on the video using the Wago lighting clips, not used them before! I was so pleased with how easy they were to use!. Thanks a lot. Ken May.

I want to share a story. A little old lady neighbour friend of mine has a light fitting, which she adores. Unfortunately the connector bit to the light bulb, broke. This was fixed. I had to repair this. Anyway, an electrician friend of mine took the fitting down for me to repair, putting up a temporary ceiling rose and pendant. It was very difficult getting him back. I was unsure how to fit the old fitting back. Until I found your video. You have helped me and the old lady so much. She is happy that it is now working in time for Christmas! Thanks so much for a clear, succinct video.

Nice one - I had three cables with six wires coming in to the old rose and couldn't work out why one of the negative wires (minus red sleeving !) was connected to the live out section. It was only when I watched your video that I got the concept of "live switch" and it all fell into place. After three months in hospital with severe electrical burns I'm now almost completely back to normal. Cheers !

These videos are meant for the "DIY'er" I don't know many people that actually own never mind know how to use a Multi-tester. Providing the viewers follow these instructions as communicated and fully understand the importance of circuit isolation there shouldn't be any problems. He would never recommend an incompetent person undertake such work. However the fact remains that the likes of B&Q are selling these lights to DIY'ers and as such this guy is showing you how to do it safely. Thanks!

Like your advice, I need to drop a feed or 2 from the loft for pending tv, thinking of a t piece in the main ring then run 2.5mm twin and earth to a socket?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 лет назад
+wayne bolton It's not common to find cables for socket circuits in the loft, as they are normally only lighting circuit cables! If you have a socket circuit up there you should be able to use a junction box to take a feed for a new socket using 2.5mm twin core and earth.

Hi mate just want to ask about identifying the switch live. Basically the old live we all know was red and the switch had to be marked with red. I recently came across some old wired switches still in good condition but not marked. Now the live is brown and should I mark the black wire with brown tape or still get away with red? Likewise there are some two way switches with old colours not marked, whats safer?

Hi mate, I was trying to do a one way switch to work two lights. One was which had the loop which was the second light in the chain and the first only had e,n,l it confused me as what I was supposed to do as I can do it when they both have the loop but this really bothered me. Can you do a video or explain how I'm supposed to do this. I can give you more info if this doesn't make sense.

Thank you so much for introducing me to Wago connectors. So much more convenient and compact than the old terminal blocks. I got 10 each of 2 way and 3 way on ebay for £6.18 total. Then I replaced a rose just like this one with a combined fan and light. I note that this is a relatively old video. I take it that if you were doing the same today you'd consider using LED spotlamps?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 6 лет назад
You are welcome. The Wago connectors a re great! I'm not sure what I would install to be honest. I have some LED lamps and they seem to flicker much more than halogen lamps- you can really notice it if you use a high quality video camera. Thanks for the comment

@AintBigAintClever

Those Wago connectors make things look easy. What always bugs me though is that these light fittings always come with three-terminal block connector strips, which are useless when replacing a rose because they don't have a terminal for the loop-through. Would only cost pennies for them to use four-terminal strips, instead you've got to provide an extra single or replace the whole block. Good video. After seeing all the US ones it's nice to see some earth sleeving! :)

We've put up a new kitchen light thanks to your great video. I have a question though if you don't mind me asking. Our light fitting isn't sitting properly flush to the ceiling and being as it's in the kitchen I'm worried about having steam etc getting into the light wiring via the gap that's between the ceiling and the light fitting. The light fitting has been put up correctly but we have a gap. Just wondering if I can fill that gap with something to keep it steam proof maybe some mastic or something similar? Would this be safe to do? Many thanks.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 7 лет назад
Yes, you could seal it, just be careful if the lamps are halogen as they got hot and might affect the sealant. I'd use a good quality silicone sealant (providing the light fitting does not use halogen lamps)
@sugarpuff2978

Hi your right only lighting circuit. Except for the electric shower cable which I will removed sooner or later so could I utilise this able for socket feeds to the bedroom ? I'll take the light feed from the rose on the landing. Thanks again Wayne
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 лет назад
+wayne bolton You could utilise the shower cable for sockets, as long as you swap the circuit breaker for a more suitable one. If you intend cutting the cable in the loft, then joining it to 2.5mm for the bedroom sockets you would have to use a 15Amp circuit breaker instead of the current shower circuit breaker, which is probably 30-45Amps.

Great video! I'm actually thinking of extending an existing one light (switched) into three, would you have any recommended videos for that? Thank you
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 лет назад
+freakstate Sorry, it is not something I intend doing in the near future. When you say three lights, do you mean another two lights in the same room to be switched on by the existing switch? So that when you operate the switch it switches on all three light fittings at once?
@freakstate
@freakstate 8 лет назад
Hi, yes theres one single dining roon light and im having another two either side. Ive located two wires going into the existing light, asuming they form part of the lighting ring that link to some nearby halogens (which operate on a seperate switch btw). I might get my leccy friend to help me out, feeling a bit out of my depth here lol

Great video. Question. At point 4.59, both earth wires had been previously put together in one sleeve, which you later placed into one clip. Are both earth wires from the same (one) wire or two separate wires (I.e one with live, the other with neutral)? Thanks
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 4 года назад
They are from two separate cables. Each cable is made up of 1 Red, 1 Black and one bare wire which should be sleeved with green and yellow sleeving. Thanks for the comment 👍
@perception5466
@perception5466 5 лет назад
I have a few questions. My old wiring is similar to yours in that there are 2 red wires connected to loop in. However, I have a yellow wire connected to Flex live. Am I correct in assuming that that is the switch live wire? Also connected to flex neutral I have a black and a blue - so these are both neutral? So, presumably I would use a 2 way connector for these like you did with your earth wires? The thing that's the most confusing is that my new chandelier has 3 silver wires coming out of the cable. How can I find out which is which when they are all silver?! Your video is great and I feel like I could tackle this, if I could figure out those silver wires.

@hineshpatel88 11 лет назад
Would I be right in saying that for the loop wires i would use a 3 way wago connecter,for the live use a 2 way wago connecter and for the neutral use another 3 way wago connecter, as i have three wires coming in which is for the switch the power in and the power out
@filthypuppet
@filthypuppet 11 лет назад
I am about to do the same and I have 3 red live wires as driezas does. So just to confirm.. I would have a terminal block with the 3 live wires together? Then on my light fitting block I'd have the switched live and live to the light in the L connection and the remaining neutrals would be fed into the N connection? And lastly the earth cables can all be connected to each other in a terminal block - is that correct?

Is it okay just to turn off the main electric switch rather than the individual light switches in the box?

Hi there, can I still follow this if I want to fit a wooden vintage ceiling light that only has a brown and blue wire coming out of it, no Neutral. What will I do with the neutrals already in the ceiling please? Thanks

I've got the same wires here from the rose but two neutrals that were separate. Can I put them together? Thanks

If you are 100% certain they were separate before they should be kept separate (although this is highly unusual). If you find some lights do not work anymore then it looks like the two neutrals were originally together (if they are both neutrals)

Hi, I was just wondering as to whether or not it is safe to fit a Light fitting in a downstairs toilet room? There is only a toilet and basin in there, and it is not going to be exposed to any steam or wetness.. It is a flush one. Many thanks

Good tip on those connectors. I normally hate fiddling with lights like this.

I need help please, I can see in this video that you have 2 cables with 6 wires (2L, 2N, 2E). What do I do if I've got 4 cables with 12 wires (4L, 4N, 4E). I have identified which cable is my switched live. Thanks.
