How to: Freshen: Remove Mildew Smell from Kitchen Sponge (2 Steps) 

I’ve done this also!!! Bc I love to have a nice fresh and clean sponge and do not like to throw anything away 😅 lol They just reported a study on the scientific findings where data was collected on kitchen sponges that were known to have a smell and to find if microwaving a sponge was cleaner or if a rinse & squeeze was cleaner. Use vinegar and baking soda

I hate that smell and when it gets on your hands, it just hangs on..so vile. My method has always been to rinse the sponge off, then coated it with a thick layer of dish soap that I push in to make sure it’s absorbed, then I cook it for a whole 2 minutes in the microwave on a paper towel.. That usually kills it but I’ve noticed once a sponge takes on that smell, it has a tendency to come back more easily.
