Mike, any advice for humidity for Beet microgreens? And do you still recommend Vermiculite other than top soiling in deep trays?
@IttyBittyMicroFarm
@IttyBittyMicroFarm 10 месяцев назад
Humidity we keep it between 48-52, And yes Vermiculite is the way to go. With soil we always had issues.

For beets, we suggest using a Deep Mesh Tray to plant in.

Which varieties do you use coco loco for ? Are all coco locos coir the same ? Or do they make different types of coir i should be aware of
@IttyBittyMicroFarm
@IttyBittyMicroFarm 7 месяцев назад
We have now switched our entire farm over to Coco Loco. Coco Loco is a mix by Fox Farm Soil & Fertilizer Company specifically. It is Coco Coir base that has been triple washed to reduce salt content & also has great ingredients like aged forest products, perlite, earthworm castings, bat guano, Norwegian kelp meal, oyster shell and dolomite lime. This has eliminated any need for us to use fertilizer (We Used GAIA Green When we used ProMix).

When you harvest the beets or arugula microgreens can they be regrown again from same plant/tray (for personal consumption, not to sell)?
@IttyBittyMicroFarm
@IttyBittyMicroFarm 2 месяца назад
For personal consumption, we've been able to regrow peas, but haven't tried beets or arugula. Those usually are done as soon as you harvest unless you have ungerminated seed that grow afterwards.

all of my trays are small in deepness. would you recomend investing in deeper trays? with more soil?
@IttyBittyMicroFarm
@IttyBittyMicroFarm 10 месяцев назад
We have found them to grow much better in deep trays with the soil filled up all the way, when we did same method with sallow tray we got 4-5 oz of yield. So if you can i would recommend deep trays.

Does it matter what you use to blackout? Where do you get those black domes?
@IttyBittyMicroFarm
@IttyBittyMicroFarm 6 месяцев назад
You can use a deep black 1020, we've painted clear domes black in the past, but at our volume we prefer these blackout domes from Bootstrap Farmer shrsl.com/4cmty

Hey, very interesting how the bigger tray grows bigger yields. What other varieties are the deep trays recommended for to get bigger yields?
@IttyBittyMicroFarm
@IttyBittyMicroFarm 10 месяцев назад
We also use deep trays for our Nasturtiums- They leaf much faster when they're able to root. 🌱

Im confused as to what difference the deep vs shallow trays make. Can you explain this a little more?
@IttyBittyMicroFarm
@IttyBittyMicroFarm 6 месяцев назад
1- Beets are a root crop and naturally want to drive their roots deep. 2- They're extremely prone to overwatering. The deep soil helps prevent the roots from sitting in water. (And often require watering only 2x in a week)

@@IttyBittyMicroFarm awesome. Thanks for the explanation! I dont have deep trays with holes but other than that, Im using your methods. So far theyre looking good!

Sometimes my beet trays come out of germination with dead patches. Any ideas as to why? Using soil, 55g seed per tray, water tray then covering with thin layer of vermiculite, stacked with weight for 5 days.
@IttyBittyMicroFarm
@IttyBittyMicroFarm 9 месяцев назад
Watch when watering in - if they're slimy beneath the Vermiculite, you may be overwateringcbefore putting them into germination.

Why do you cover the seed with vermiculite instead of soil?
@IttyBittyMicroFarm
@IttyBittyMicroFarm 9 месяцев назад
We use vermiculite for multiple reasons including increased moisture retention, more uniform coverage, and less risk of contamination. We'll definitely have to make a video listing all the awesome uses & benefits of vermiculite! :)

How much are you selling beets for per/oz?

so you get 8 trays out of a pound of seed. that has to be far and away the #1cost item.
@IttyBittyMicroFarm
@IttyBittyMicroFarm 3 месяца назад
They are a majority of the tray cost. We do factor those additional costs into our pricing. You definitely want to purchase seeds in bulk if you can- the cost per pound usually drops significantly.
