If your engine is suspected of having damage to any of the critical parts, it most likely has metal in the oil filter. This video describes how to inspect your oil filter for engine damage.
You really do have the best mechanic videos. When I was on flat-rate 20 years ago people used to laugh at me for cutting oil filters open but boy did it used to save me a lot of diagnosis time. Money in my pocket was worth being called the science professor when I got my microscope and metal test kit out lol
Great showing the heat ring.... I've never seen anyone show or even talk about this before (don't give away all the secrets) in a small shop once I worked with an old timer who would "grind" the one crank journal in block with long strips of emery cloth until spun journal was "smooth" and would mic to the undersize spec... Replace just the spun bearing .. .. you'd be surprised how many of these went hundreds of thousands of miles...(I know right) I have only done it once on a critical piece of stationary mining equipment... That couldn't be down waiting on parts for an "in frame" ...sat on those parts for almost a year until I got it cause trans... went....my crank guy just shook his head ...but hey it saved a contract for a small company and these days that is jobs
Adept Ape long strips 3 or 4 ft, an inch wide wrap around the journal and your hands back and forth goes quicker than you think...trick is to go evenly and set them up on the loose side....scotch brighten new bearing for the last little bit....he said it was a bush fix from the seebees when he was in Korea.....spun rods are obviously much easier to do
Thank you for the lesson. I may learn something yet! My son who runts a Kenworth with a CAT 15 would NEVER let his engine get that dirty. Several weeks ago he came home, washed his truck and the engine compartment as well. He cleaned that engine very carefully and thoroughly. After two days he painted the engine; he had a small oil leak and could not find it. But with a clean engine and a new paint job it was basically simple. The leak is small and in the front of the engine. Time for a CAT technician to fix it. They will have a nice clean engine to worth with. The leak is not too bad - about a gallon every two weeks of running under load with all the gauges showing normal operation. We'll see but I will bust his butt if he doesn't have CAT run a diagnostic report on the engine since the truck was purchased used.
great information! I am trying to buy a late model MCI bus with a Detroit engine.. how can I determine engine condition without removing the filter? Aside from blow back what else can I look for? thanks so much!
Informative video man🤙. I did an oil change yesterday on my 2.5 common rail diesel. Had my 2 year old messing around with me while i was doing the oil change. Drained old oil replaced with new oil but bloody forgot to put the oil filter in! Started her up (about 15 to 20 seconds) all the oil pissed out where the oil filter should have been. Do you recon it would have done any real damage? Cheers.
Very nice video. Yeah, metal flakes belong in the paint. Shiny stuff on the visible part of a truck, like chrome and a nice sparkling paint job is much better to look at lol. Not good when you find them in the lube. This is the price paid for skipping a lube interval.
I have on e on the 3406E and C15 engine already. I'm making a 3406B video as I type this, this is also the 3406C which will be discussed in the 3406B video.
Hello friend! Thank you for your videos! Your Content is with substance. Now to my question. I own a freightliner with a Cat C15. I acquire it not long ago and is now approaching a million miles. Truck is running strong without major issues. I would like to do a bearing job to avoid a major failure due to fatigue. Do you recommend doing a a bearing job to avoid a sprung bearing or such? Engine does not have a lot a blowby. It has disent power.
+Edson Jerez I don't recommend bearing hubs really. I've pulled lots of bearings on rebuilds with a million miles on them that look very good. If the truck is running good, had good oil pressure, and no problems with oil samples you should be good. I would start saving up for a rebuild though as with that many miles you might need it in a couple years. You'll get new bearings then. It is your truck though and bearing rolls aren't very expensive if it would give you piece of mind.
Adept Ape great video ! Currently where I work we are having problems with a ISX with only 199,000 miles on it. Could it be that they HAVE NOT CHANGED THE OIL SINCE THEY BOUGHT IT 1 YEAR AGO ?? LOL yeah they don't service anything. Sad
SAE and Metric no not yet cracked head. But it's been greatly abused and neglected. Their going to overhaul it since their in it. But they still won't service it when they get it back lol. Beautiful Pete.
I have low HP caterpillar 3406e(2ws08414) with a stock 1439153 camshaft. One of my injector lobes is starting to get worn down. I ordered a replacement camshaft through YNG LLC. They sent me 1390538 camshaft which is rated for the higher hp arrangements. They said that they bet their left nut on itthat it will workwith no problems. On the contrary the cat dealer says that these cams are different, but they don’t have info on how they differ . What will happen if I put the 1390538 into 1439153 engine arrangement? The higher hp cam arrangement uses the same pistons as what I have in my engine now,but the injectors, turbo, and ecm flash files are different. Do I need to change everything out for it to work or can I just swap them with no other changes and have no problems?
How kuch is alot of metal shavings? I never have shavings on drain plug but today i changed my oil and found ALOT, i did have to use ether 5x this last trip to get home bc i would lose prime sometimes (not always) and couldnt start my 12.7 Detroit. I hate using ether but i didnt have a choice. Could using ether 5x messed my motor up? Oil psi is normal and engine sounds normal too, the metal shavings on plug is what freaked me out
This is going to sound like a dumb question, I’m still a bit new to engine diagnostics but why does a spun bearing almost always warrant complete engine replacement? Couldn’t you just swap out bearings and be good to go or does this failure result in some other issues such as actual damage to the block even if it doesn’t throw connecting rod or other similar catastrophic type damage.
I have learn a lot from your presentation. Thank for your work, can this symtom happen from excessive use time. I mean extra time before lube oil change .
+olmangolf Cat actually uses a magnetic drain plug on most of their engines. Other manufacturers do a well. In this case I would not have helped. The oil filter did its job and caught a lot of metal, but the engine damage was already done.
To all watching this video you can apply this to virtually any diesel vehicle. Especially to 2.0tdi which have problems when oil intervals are missed...
Viet Cong It can be both. Sludge can block the oil openings therefore depriving bearings from oil. It should also increase oil pressure. If not then it's leaking oil somewhere or the owner didn't car to check for oil level.
As of today, watch his engine destruction compilation. It was actually bits of filter element from the oil filter that the guy had been using before this one.
