This is part 4 of a 6 part video series explaining how I installed a metal roof on my house. In this part I cover proper screw tension, cutting metal for valley, cutting metal for hip roof, and cutting metal for vent pipe.
The metal I'm using is called "crinkle black"
I purchased all my materials at buckeyemetalro...
They are a local company. Google "metal roofing supplier" to find one in your area.
The buble-wrap underlayment I used is Rfoil 2500. It can be found here rfoil.com/insu...
The dektite roof boot can be found here www.ebay.com/i...
The Fabral vented foam closure can be found here www.homedepot....

I've glanced at roofing videos from time to time over the years, and for the most part I always got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I've been metal roofing for the past 30 years using the same techniques you are using. Keep up the good work.

It was so hard to watch this series of videos. I knew nothing about metal roofs and I learned so much from your videos. Only reason it was hard was that I seen why the roof on my house leaks so much is because it was done so horribly! I feel you have given me the knowledge to be able to replace the metal and do it correctly! Your videos have been saved for reference. Thank you!

So, there is a screw called a lap screw (also known as stitch screws). They are used on the ribs where the sheets overlap, and the screws designed for structural support, such as wood grip and self-drivers, are designed to go into the flat of the profile for optimal strength. With that said, I am not hating on you or anybody that fastens their roof in such ways, but in many companies, this will negate the warranty.
@Apewarrior
@Apewarrior 2 года назад
yeah right!! you suppose to screw it in the flats< on regular r-panels you screw it in all three flats, then you screw the laps about 24'' to 36'' apart!!

Admire the series and how you show how to correct some mistakes, but what prevent the rain from one slope from running past the valley and on to the other slope(and under the metal)

I notice you put your screws in through the ribs, as opposed to the lands between, except 1st row. Do you feel that you get a better seal, more durable, through the rib?
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 3 года назад
The reason I screw on the rib instead of in the flat is to keep the screw out of the water running down the roof. The washers are the weakest link in metal roofing and I like to keep the high and dry. I actually put all my screws on the rib now, including the bottom row. Just have to be very careful with tension.

I cut my metal with a skill saw. Put the saw blade on backwards and away you go. A real time saver and better cuts.
@MT_Homes

Under no circumstances should you cut metal with a skil saw. Cut looks worse and will rust over the years plus Sparks can burn the paint.

Kinda surprised that you aren't using power nippers. I rarely do metal roofs and I have 2 milwaukee power snips.
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 5 лет назад
I’ve never owned one but have worked for guys that have them. They are handy for sure. I feel like I can cut just as fast with a long nosed snips though which I always have in my tool belt without having to chase down power nippers. Also some nippers kinda wrinkle the metal a little. Just a preference thing really. Thanks for watching!

@@MT_Homes I built a garage, using a circular saw with the blade backwards. I use, Used blades, but good ones. To dawl to cut lumber but good enough for metal. I have 26 gauge metal. Thank you for making these videos. I wished I would have attached my roof on the garage with the screws like you did this one.

Might be a good idea to get an external mic, and attach it to the neck of your T shirt, when you are facing away from the camera. It's a little difficult to hear you during some segments of this video.

@M.T. HOMES great series, you’ve been an asset for my upcoming project. Thank you. One issue I am facing and looking for you insight... My end wall is board and batten, any tips on how to deal with that? I’d sincerely appreciate any insight
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 4 года назад
Thank you! I’m assuming the board n batten is wood. Let’s say the vertical part of the endwall trim is 5 1/2” inches tall. What I would do is cut the board n batten off 3 1/2” up and loosen it slightly in order to tuck the top 2” of the endwall behind it and screw it in place. You can leave the 3 1/2” exposed or buy a 1x4, pant it to match the board n batten and lay it in horizontally as a trim board. Hope this helps you. Thanks for watching!

I was always taught the screws go on the flats not on the ribs
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 5 лет назад
That’s a big debate between metal roofers. I actually didn’t realize how many people still screwed in the flat until I made these videos. I used to screw on the flats but would not go back to that. More prone to leaking if you don’t get the tension just right.
@SGlatinofan
