Here is the fuel line that I bought to replace the awful one that came with the can.

If you want to skip straight to the install, then scrub up to: 2:53
Here are the sizes I talked about in the video
Nuts for the mounting bolts that came with the can: 6 x 1.00
Nuts for the studs what are already in the engine bay:

Excellent tutorial! I have the same oil catch can, only black. I have installed mine right at the PCV inlet of the intake. This way I have minimized the length of tubing going from and to the can. Anyway, the amount of crap collected in the can makes it a mandatory upgrade for this car, IMO. I like a little dipstick. In fact, you can remove of the oil/water with the syringe w/o unscrewing the bottom cap. Please do a follow up video during your next oil change.

Took me 1h20m start to finish including prep, cleanup, and making a bracket. Good practice for my upcoming IMS install and spark plugs once the parts land. A 5"x5" T bracket ($3 from Home Depot) works pretty well. Bracket is zinc so it drills out pretty easily. Bolt spacing on the X is 9cm. I added about 4mm of washers - a neoprene one against the firewall then nylon - behind the bracket to help it rest better. Time will tell if they can withstand the temps. 7' of fuel line will leave you some working room. If you absolutely can't get that clamp off the back of the engine you can consider using a ⅜ ID barbed coupler to just extend it to the can. Thanks for keeping my Xterra on the road, Ryan!

I made my on catch can for my 2003 Camry. I bought 24 oz aluminum drink tumbler made for hot and cold drinks. It came with a screw on lid with a rubber o ring seal and a hole for a straw. Paid five bucks for it at a thrift store minus the straw. I installed a small drain valve in the side near the bottom, used the straw hole for the return line fitting and installed the inlet line about a 1/3 of the way down from the top. Since the tumbler got smaller from top to bottom i was able to install a baffle just above the inlet line. With the baffle above the inlet any oil mist stays in the can and allows the vapor to recirculate. With Harleys we install a filter on the end of the hose and vent it to the atmosphere. Recirculating it back through a car engine is bad enough but with a Harley the carbon will build up quick in the chambers and on the valves. It builds up in the heads on a car because the air fuel mixture from the car doesn't burn hot enough to burn it out and keep it clean. Unless you are using an additive in the fuel on regular intervals. Btw way mine is located up front down low beneath the headlite and battery. Easy to open the drain when i change oil. Great video that will help out a lot of people and that color blue is my favorite color too👍

Thanks man!! I appreciate you using the link. It’s a great way to support the channel. Yea I am a real stickler for not making new holes in the truck so that spot was a slam dunk for me. However I have seen people make brackets that fit to the left of the intake. It’s usually an L shaped bracket that gets mounted in between the truck and some other item already in the engine bay (like the fuse box or something). Once you get it mounted please come back and comment on where you put it!

This catch can works well. You can also insert some stainless stool wool into the can (the thicker kind and not the ultra thin kind) to enhance the baffling effect. In doing so, it improves the functionality of the oil catch can and catches more oil overall. Great video dude.

Seems like a passenger side install would have been simpler and possibly more effective. I’ve been wondering if a second can for the driver side bank that feeds to the intake plenitude on the tube. I’ve noticed there’s a significant amount of oil there as well. Though it seems the pcv valve sends the oil to the right bank cylinders. The left side of the lower intake manifold was mostly dry and shiny while the right side had a significant film. The spark plugs after 100k miles also showed a history of light oil spray ect.
@bertrenolds5

there is no room on the passenger side. this is old but incase anyone is reading drivers side would be was easier to get at a catch can with oil in it.

Good use of mounting. Just a couple of minor comments. Use thread lock or lock washers on the nuts re-attaching the can bracket because they can vibrate out. Also, put a washer on the first spacing bolt under your bracket. This will sandwich the big bracket holes between two washers for better distributed force so the bolt won’t wear through the hole, and it will be more secure.

Few notes if you want to do it: 1. Remove the hood or you will be banging your head on it plus you get better access and view of the hose 2. The electrical loom can be removed but there is a small tab inside it and you need to use a small flat screw driver to lift it then pull 3. Disconnect the grey electrical plug to get better access 4. Use silicon lubricant on the inside of the tube before inserting it, those plastic inlets can be fragile. Did mine today and iI had to fight with the outlet from the PCV but finally got it off, some blood was spilled.

Good tips! I'll add my 2 cents because I'm a bleeding narcissist. #1 - Get a longer hood prop to use while working under the hood. Taking the hood off for a small job is overkill, IMO. #4 - Use a small amount of motor oil instead. Silicone can damage sensors. They may be upstream, but oil should work just as well.

So I tried for as long as my patience allowed, but I could not remove the factory hose that connected the pcv to the air box. I gave up and remembered that I had vacuum connectors from a previous project so I used those to connect the IN from the can to the existing pcv valve and then just connected the OUT to the air box. Thoughts?

I have a question about catch cans, are they mainly for GDI engines only,or are they good for about any vehicle? And do they actually work? Thanks for the helpful video
@mediomorde4511
@mediomorde4511 5 лет назад
Oil catch cans will benefit any engine. Even if they do not have GDI. Of course GDI engines benefit most because it reduces build up on the valves, but the secondary function of a catch can is it keeps oil out of the exhaust system which ruins catalytic converters. Oil is not fully burned in the combustion chamber and will destroy the cats, which will lead to engine destruction if not replaced immediately. Basically ceramic dust from the cats after they have been destroyed can come back into the combustion chamber and wear out piston rings which leads to loss of compression and more oil burning.

Hey Ry any tips to repair catalytic converter for my 2005 Xterra or anyone here got any tips
@mediomorde4511
@mediomorde4511 5 лет назад
DON'T LET THAT SIT WITHOUT REPAIRING, IT WILL RUIN YOUR ENGINE! Here is a reply I made to someone else but it touches on that: Oil catch cans will benefit any engine.

In my car's case (Peugeot 306 XSi) sludge (mostly building up with short drives in cold periods) was clogging up the intakemanifold and mapsensor.

Why didn't Nissan do a recall to have this added or at least alert customers to this issue? I'm going to order this kit for my 2014 Xterra.
@Rythecarguy
@Rythecarguy 2 года назад
Most cars don't have this. The way that it's designed is how vehicles normally operate. This is just an aftermarket product that helps capture the oil before it makes it back into the engine.

@@Rythecarguy I watched a video explaining why this is needed in GDI engines. I don't know if the 2014 Xterra has a GDI engine, though, but it sounds like it would be useful in a lot of vehicles.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp or CEL Check Engine Light. So if after installing this and you do have that light on, there is an issue. Since it is off after installing, all is good.
