In this video we install a standing seam metal roof that has valleys with a slope transition. This is a fairly complex installation that takes a lot of time and patience. At the time of this video I searched the internet for instructions on how others have done this but I couldn't find anything. If you have any suggestions, questions, or general comments please drop them below in the comments section and I'll do my best to answer. Also, the links below are to videos about other metal roofing projects I have done if interested.

Do you realize this is the ONLY video on YT that shows a compound valley for standing seam? Nice work! this helped me.

You don’t need to use crazy math to figure out lay out. But you do need to know you’re allowances for over lap based on local roofing code.
@patrickfrank366
@patrickfrank366 8 месяцев назад
So as far as overlap allowances: local codes don’t even have a clue never mind number. Oddly enough. I like where you’re going…we should definitely have roofing police because I’m roofing 35 years now and you wouldn’t believe the hacks out there

Thanks. This was the first time we did a roof like this so we were unsure how it would go. But I’m happy with how it turned out.

Good job in describing your work ,though it seems like you've over-complicated a few things. I've been roofing for 25yrs and am still learning new techniques, but sometimes the old school way still works best. First, you're never going to be able to make a snap lock seam absolutely water tight, no one can, there's too much wiggle room. Go 1" dbl lock standing seam and you'll have no worries there. Second, put a 2" lap on both sides of the valley, that'll eliminate the cleats, and the pans can be folded into the valley itself. Third, when installing 1" standing seam, the pans are 20⅞" wide, they cover more area. Fourth, also when installing 1" standing seam, the angle change (transition) can be made right into the pan by fabricating the bend into the locks themselves with a pair of needle nose pliers, eliminating all that extra metal transition trim. And that's just the field, there are much simpler solutions for caps, hips, and stack (pipe) penetrations as well. I'm not going to go any further 'cause y'all know the difference in styles. These are naught but suggestions. Good luck guys! And thanks for the video!

Wow you seriously like the new legalization law. You really put some thought into the legs lining up and actually nailed those lower panels first? I wanna see the after video and see how much you guys learned. Ever see a double lock valley? I double lock valleys, hips and ridges sometimes depending on slope. All in all nice ethics skip. Do it once and do it right.

Even better instead of screwing right through that apron flashing try folding down the top 3/4”-1” and fastening it using clips hooking the top fold and screwing clip instead of all those holes in that nice new apron flashing. Plus when caulking between valleys always leave wheel paths for sweat. Metal roofs can get super hot and usually when it’s hot out people tend to crank the a/c units and can literally leak. Pretty amazing but true. Keep up the good work

Yeah the labor on a roof like this is extensive, but if you have an open gable roof with no valleys, slope transitions, or things to flash around it goes down quick.

Sorry to hear about the hand that sucks! I was wondering about the vented ridge cap you put on with foam rather can Z bars at the top. I could not see if you actually had ridge vents cut in your roof. It looked like the blue underlayment went over the ridge.
@HowtoHacks
@HowtoHacks 2 года назад
Thanks. It’s all good now. We did cut the blue underlayment back as we put the ridge cap on. Some spots on the front gables had framing in the way so we couldn’t put a vent there.

american standing seam roofs are a joke 30 year lifespan for that roof iffff that tbh … 120 plus years or more for a true standing seam roof in the uk

I seriously hope you have some experience before trying to do a metal roof on a house like this. You can watch all the videos you want but it is going to be rather difficult. Not exactly safe either, metal is very slippery even with a rope and harness.

Yeah. If that happens hopefully the 24 gauge metal will hold up as it’s significantly heavier than 26 gauge. Also, I placed the metal directly on the roof deck so that should help support the metal some during an impact as well.

@@HowtoHacks so on the valley...does it need the cleats or can you just screw the seam panel on it?
@HowtoHacks
@HowtoHacks 2 года назад
@@january2568 I think it needs a cleat. the cleat has butyl tape under it which will prevent water from splashing under the panel. Additionally the planet is allowed to expand and contract with the cleat. If it’s screwed down it won’t be able to move freely because it’s attached to the roof deck at both ends. This could cause a lot of oil canning.

@@HowtoHacks omg 250+ man hours?!?!!? That is absolutely insane! I would have to charge $25-30k labor to do this roof. And that’s not counting tear off… No I would be shooting all the flashings down with a roofing nailer. Those screws at the very top of your panels under the pitch change metal and behind the Z-bar could also be shot down with a nail gun. I would only use screws on anything that has caulk tape under it and for the panels. I would have to get this job done in about half that amount of time! That’s why I hate Z-bar systems!

What is the point of the ridge vent without attic opening?
@HowtoHacks
@HowtoHacks 3 года назад
@@jorgebonilla7047 There is an opening it’s just the way those short gables were framed the opening could only be about 10 feet long while the total ridge is about 22 feet. I cut out as much as I could. Where you can’t cut an opening you still need to use the vent material or z flashing to block birds, bats, and bugs from crawling into the gap under the ridge. The vent material is a lot easier to install.
