How To Kill The Main Character ABRUPTLY and not have Everyone HATE You 

ANOTHER good example I should've brought up is Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) SPOILERS: Midway through the campaign or so, Viktor Reznov reveals to the Protagonist Alex Mason through a flashback that the Russian Protagonist of the predecessor, (World At War), Dimitri Petrenko, was betrayed alongside Reznov by the main villain, Nikita Dragovich and we witness through Reznov's eyes in the flashback Petrenko's death, signifying the unjust betrayal, as Reznov was immediately branded a traitor to the Soviet Union, and ended up in one of the infamous gulags, plotting his revenge against Dragovich. It was also a brutal and slow death for Petrenko. He's locked into a room adjacent to Reznov, and gassed, and we witness his pain firsthand before he dies. "Dimitri Petrenko was one of the bravest men I had ever known. He fought by my side from the siege of Stalingrad to the fall of Berlin. The wounds he sustained ensuring our victory should have earned him a hero's welcome to Russia. But Stalin had little need for heroes. Dimitri Petrenko was a hero, he deserved a hero's death. Instead of giving his life for the glory of the Motherland, he died for nothing, like an animal... He should have died in Berlin." - Viktor Reznov describing Dimitri Petrenko to Alex Mason. I would also refer to as Petrenko and Reznov as Anti-Heroes, as they're seen committing war crimes against German Soldiers in World At War but are still sympathetic enough from a story perspective.

This is why killing off beloved characters in a stupid way is not only terrible, but it's a disservice to them. Joel Miller from The Last of Us Part 2, Batman from Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League, and Luke (Jake) Skywalker in The Last Jedi are prime examples, though the latter died at the end of the movie.

Everyone knew joel was going to die in the sequel. Killing a beloved character is a very particular thing to do. Even if joel doesn't deserve a heros death, his character deserves better. He saved abby, which he had no insentive do and gets punished for it.

Dude I didn't just shoot the doctor in a non lethal area, I didn't kill anybody in the level. It's possible to sneak past everyone in the building, in fact on the hardest difficulty which I did it on, it was the only way to go because the combat was too RNG based to reliably kill enemies.

It's not even about the fact Joel died. It's the fact that it was so contrived and the rest of the game was full of that level of extremely forced writing.

A little unrelated, but I need to allude to Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and what she did to Batman.....One of the most disgusting scenes I've ever seen.

Honestly It’s Shame That Transformers Never had a True Stable Continuity like Star Wars. The Closest we got was with The War For Cyberton Games in 2010, where they tried to use all 20 years of Transformers history into one thing.

Yeah I gotta agree with you on the transformers game, it especially characterizes starscream much better than how he was in the movie. And although I still don't like the designs of the characters, I appreciate the story the game tells and how it characterizes everyone.

Don’t forget in the original MW2 near the end of Loose Ends Shepherd betrays Task Force 141 and Kills Ghost and Roach in probably one of the most saddest moments in gaming history. Also in Black Ops 2 where if you didn’t see through the ploy of the trade off. You could actually end up having Woods kill Alex Mason, the protagonist of the first game. And finally we have the entirety of Halo Reach where one by one you team is killed until you make your last stand.

I might be in the minority on this, but I don't think The Last of Us is all that special.

I wonder if one of the reasons why Forsaken was so successful as a D2 DLC, despite killing off a beloved character, was exactly how they handled the message in the story. Besides fun gameplay, we had a Revenge vs Justice kind of thing going on as we were going on the mission to kill Uldren Sov. As the story progress, some characters approve and disapprove of your violent behavior and will comment on it. Ghost especially became concerned for the player as the mission went on despite being determined in the beginning. Becoming concerned for the person we were turning to and whether or not this was the right decision. The mission questions your motives, whether or not you had the right and even provokes you into agreeing with the violent Revenge filled path. In the end as we become the judge, jury, and executioner of Uldren Sov he asks “The line between light and dark is oh so thin. Do you know which side you’re on?” There is a difference between Justice and Revenge. And that’s the main take away I got from that DLC. What were you doing all this for? Even if you weren’t going to kill him over revenge it didn’t mean he should be free to live as his crimes as Uldren Sov called for the death penalty. He hurt so many more people than just you. There was even another character present in the end, and when the scene went to black we hear a gunshot letting the player decide for themselves how and why Uldren died. Did you kill him? Did you kill him for justice or revenge? Did you not kill him, and let the NPC kill him? The DLC respected its players on this and it’s the reason why it’s my favorite revenge story

Another good example would be John Marston in the first Red Dead Redemption. His death is very abrupt but it doesn’t ruin the story whatsoever

I also see the way how they execute Joel's death as a lousy excuse to make way for other characters to hijack the story. The Lev and Abby relationship feels as a weaker imitation of Ellie and Joel's dynamic. Abby and Lev surviving as if they are going to be in future stories. Also Ellie sparing Abby is the wrong message of the whole Revenge theme. It simply makes no sense at that point and Ellie is not even rewarded for that cause everyone left her. Abby instead gets away with cold blooded murder right after Joel even saved her life. Ellie has to pay for her Revenge even though she spared Abby in the end. Abby gets away with it does not show remorse, does not learn anything by it.

Last of Us Part 2 was just a wasted potential and waste of an actual good character. I rather not remember TLOU2 existing at all and just remember it as some bad fanfiction. Joel could've died in so many ways that would feel natural but nah. They rather pass the message and their agenda to players because that's what it matters. God forbid these writers writing any more game story anymore.

TBH i dont think you should have released a video before completely finishing the game. When I got to the part where they smashed Joel's brain's out on the floor, I stopped playing for a week because I was traumatized. I had already been spoiled and knew about what would happen at the end, and part of me didn't want to keep playing. But I did keep playing, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I don't like the game entirely, it has a lot of flaws. But that being said, your credibility isn't 100% because you really haven't finished the game, just like how I wouldn't feel complete if I didn't finish it either.
