How to make a ring from scratch.
I wanted to make a video showing how to make a simple copper ring. You can do this at home with items from your local hardware store and online. After this tutorial you will know the basics of how to make a simple ring from copper wire. This can also be done with brass, silver or gold.

@@block4565 I for one like using all my little files and whatnot. I made one of these rings today and I've been trying for 2 weeks. I finally figured out my solder wasn't flowing due to the heat not being high enough. So glad it finally happened. Just need to make 5 more rings then I can try make something with more difficulty. All the little skills need to be developed.

Not as easy as it looks! I do NOT have steady hands. LOL! I FINALLY soldered my very first piece (the copper ring but with 10 ga wire). It looks a mess but nothing I can't file away. I started with a tiny piece of wire solder and it kept falling off so I attempted to solder directly from the longer piece of wire solder. It seemed like a good idea at the time! 😂 I should've revisited this video beforehand instead of after but I plan to clean it up and try to add the coils like you did in one you showed at the end. @@GomeowCreations I am a Bigfoot researcher here on youtube and spend a lot of time outdoors searching for them and gifting them. I once found a large brass lure and I made two rings from it. It was the first gift I gave them. The other just disappeared from my back pack. I have been making these little swords and axes for the little people I discovered while researching nature and seeking bigfoot. As crazy at it sounds, I really get some good stuff for my efforts gifting them. I am writing a book and making a documentary on that adventure that I hope really gets out there. I like your rings because I know that I can make some larger rings and smaller rings for my spirited friends. I have a video where we stuck a camera in a baby bigfoots face (accidentally)and overlooked it in the video for two years I created this channel because I am an artist of the day and am now somewhat disabled and had to reinvent my income sources, so I am into this venture in the evenings while sitting in front of tube. I plan to sell most of what I make at barter fairs, something that is becoming big here in Washington state. . I like making sculptures, and recently made a Sasquatch that took 162 hours. It has wire hair (25,000). I probably will start showing my other art and that of my family, we all are artists, all 5 of my kids and even some of the grandkids. I just wanted to share a little, because you are the first channel I subbed to going into my new hobby of ring making. Soon I will show some of mine. Peace to you and yours, and thanks for subbing. Great video. The bit that I can't work out is the end with the wax and lacquer. What goes on first and what does the lacquer do?
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 3 года назад
Lacquer is basically a paint to cover the metal so air and acids can't get to it so it will not tarnish. If you are going to add a clear lacquer or paint to your work you need to make sure it's clean and all oils or waxes are removed do it will stick. When using the wax is good for storage but it will come off quickly if you are going to use the jewelry. Over the years I have learned not to fight with copper and brass jewelry and if you are going to make something using it make sure to add some silver to the parts of it that will come incompact with a persons skin. You can do this with plating or using a thin sheet of silver.

@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations Год назад
Copper will oxidize very fast but it can be done. You want the metal as clean as you can so pickling will take any of the oxidation off it. You have to use flux when doing this to keep it from oxidizing at the solder joint. Also heating will not mess up your metal unless you melt it.

Thanks and not at all, It will tarnish even if you coat it with wax or clear coat it will come off over time. You can use a layer of hard clear resin on it that will last for some time but that is all going to be up to you. I honestly would just make copper jewelry for practice and anything you are going to use just make it in silver. If the copper color is a must you can plate the inside of the ring with silver or gold. Another option that I have been doing is make the inside out of a solid bit of silver so it will not react with the skin and the outside will have that nice copper look

Can a person preheat the solder first and quickly stick it to the seam? I’m asking because I have no clue but it just seems it would help with the fire scale on the piece OR make the barrier flux using the boric acid and denatured alcohol and apply that and dry off before applying the regular flux and solder? I am seeing that being discussed but want your opinion because I’m tired of bouncing all over the place and I have chose YOU as my permanent instructor from now on
@tahomyjo
@tahomyjo 2 года назад
Maybe with such a small piece “fire stain won’t be a issue “
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 2 года назад
So if you are doing this with silver and you over head it it will get some fire stain but it's not the end of the world. You can use a solder pick and melt the sold and it will stick to the pick and you can move that over to the ring and heat both and it will flow onto the fluxed part of the ring. No matter what you do you need to pick it to clean it up from any oxidation and the hardened flux. This will be with any metal you use. When it comes to getting a stain in the metal, like silver it will look alike a darker bit when polishing it. There are 2 ways to get rid of it. 1 sand it off and re polish it. 2 heat the metal up but not too much to get my stains and put it right into some pickling solution. Repeat this over and over again until when you heat it up it no longer gets a tarnish on it and the metal will looks like a nice matte white color. What that heating did is burned off some of the copper that is in the 925 silver leaving a layer of fine silver over it. The stain that was there was oxidized copper in the metal so with that done you can polish it up and it should be gone. I home that makes sense and is understandable 😁👍

Thank you for this tutorial. Finally someone that uses copper. 😍 I have a few questions... 🙂 1. Where does this big copper roll come from? Is it electric wire? 😳 I have to order little rolls so I have constantly to order it and they are all over the place. I am looking since long after a solution. Grandano that shop you mention isn't an option. Costs a fortune on shipping. And I don't think they ship to belgium. And I don't care it's not dead soft, I can warm it up. 🤫 2. What happens when you don't use Flux? Don't understand why you use it. Because you cleaned it already with the pickel. 🤔 3. After you softened your copper, what you do to harden it again? Or does it harden over time? I thought you had to hammer it to harden... 🥴 I do copper and silver wiring jewelry together with stones like jade, turquoise, tiger eye, Sunstone. And think copper is beautiful with the colors of the stones... Thanks for this tutorial😘, I subscribed and now going to explore your channel... 😃😃😃
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 3 года назад
1. You can use electrical wire just make sure it's 999 copper. I can't link to anything in your country but I'm sure you can find something. 2.You have to use flux, especially with copper. Then you heat metals they will start to oxidize, this will make it so your solder will just ball up and not flow. When you use flux it keeps everything clean. Look for something called handy flux or look for a borax cone. Don't use flux for electric solder, it will not work at the temps you need to work at. 3. You can work harden it by hammering it. Something else you can do the help harden it is use a rock tumbler with steel shot in it for a few hours.

@@GomeowCreations well I don't have tumblers an never solder in my life except the thing I have to solder when something electrical breaks. But thanks. I will look for some Flux. So I can handle it more... thanks for the response and when it comes a bit warmer, I will try to make some rings, so that I don't have to make open rings or wire them. It would be so easy if I can solder... nice. Thanks a lot for the time to take for explaining... of to get some electric wire and a torch... big hugs and greetings from belgium...

Excellent video tutorial, thanks for posting. Do you know if the polishing bits and compound could be used on gold-filled too? Also, what does the Renaissance wax do?
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 9 лет назад
Kristen Case First off I would like to say, Thank you for being my very 1st comment on youtube. :) Note: I have never used filled metals so this is what I think will happen. If you use the polishing bits (The rubber and diamond ones) on any metal, It will take metal off it. So I think you might be able to get away with maybe the blue one, just to clean up some scratches. If I had some filled wire, I would be more then happy to give it a try. As for the polishing compound and the fabric wheel I think that would work just fine. Renaissance wax: I use this on copper and brass mostly to keep it from tarnishing as fast as it would if it was just polished. Copper really likes to change color so if you do this it will "help" keep it sealed. I also have used it over clear coat to "help" keep the oils from people skin from eating away the clear coat. If you want something that will last a lot longer you will need to look for a metal sealer. I have some on its was to try out now. I will post a review of it after I test it. I hope this helps =)

Hey @GomeowCreations, this video was so awesome and helped me so much with many of the issues I was having with soldering copper. The one thing I am still really struggling with is how to re-harden my pieces after I have soldered. I know work hardening is supposed to help but I feel like when I pull my pieces out of the pickle after soldering them they are just ridiculously soft and Im not sure what is happening. I don't have any issues soldering gold or silver, so Im wondering if you might have any ideas about where I am going wrong? Please help!
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 5 лет назад
Well copper does get really soft after heating and most people just work harden it using a hammer. You can also try tumbling it with some stainless steel, this should help work harden it without leaving marks. 😄👍
@katyastrasburger1824

GomeowCreations thanks! I think I wasn’t hammering enough because I was afraid of breaking or flattening my pieces so I redesigned them into a more 2D style so that I could harden them on an anvil (using a rubber mallet) without changing the design. Your tutorials are so helpful, thanks for sharing your knowledge!

@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 6 лет назад
That would depend on the finish you're looking to get. Normally when I patina a piece I don't polish it before adding the patina but I will use a polishing wheel on some parts after that or even a wire wheel to bring back some of the color from the metals. It all depends on how you want it to look. 😀

you give such great instructions, many times I feel people talk over my head. I only have a couple of questions, first, after I have finished all the buffing, I then spray with the lacquer? before finishing it up with the wax? The 2nd question is, wouldn't all 12ga wire be 2mm in thickness?or do you still need to measure it to be absolutely positive for the calculation?
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 5 лет назад
Yes, make sure you lacquer it be for putting a wax on it, if you do it the other way around the lacquer will not stick. You also don't have to use the wax if you have a lacquer on it, it's just extra. Yes all 12ga wire should be the same but I work more in mm and not gauge. Like now that I make my own wire I just use the mm and never even thing of what gauge it is. 😁👍

Oh dear, yes, that makes sense (the changing a video thing). Firescale and oxidation are different, maybe that's what happened. Firescale MUST be sanded/ ground off to be removed, it's IN the metal below the surface as well. Pickling won't get it. I am so much a supporter of what you do and I am also not an expert but I know how a lot of people that are learning need good accurate info.
