I saw some cool things while researching the high quality techniques for horns, looking at what the industry professionals use in TV shows and films to get the most realism. In the Daniel Radcliffe movie "Horns' they actually use dental acrylic to make the horns, then attach them to his forehead via a wire head piece which goes all the way around his head and is hidden under a wig. Then they use silicone edge blenders on the front of the horn. You can see this in the special features section of the DVD. I've seen Lightning Cosplay use a resin to make the horns, then filled with a rigid polyurethane expanding foam, which makes the horns hard on the outside, and lightweight inside. But requires a silicone mould (more expensive). And as mentioned in the video, Stuart Bray's horn technique was pretty cool, from his blog: "The horns needed to be lightweight so I swilled the moulds with latex tinted with acrylic paint to a desired base colour, and then when this dried I filled them with two-part expanding urethane foam. This helped the horn keep its shape and remain lightweight."

There's a lot of info crammed in here! If you're wanting to try this out, make sure you know how to use the products and check out their material safety data sheets and all that jazz. There's more tutorials up going over silicone flat-moulds on my channel and I can direct people to really indepth learning resources online :)

Thank you so much for this (and all your tutorials). I love how detail oriented you are and you show us how to make the pieces just perfect. I'm planning on doing some prosthetics, I'll make them much simpler because I only have latex and clay, but I'm glad I can always come back here for instructions the day I get my hands on some more professional stuff to work with. I mean, I can simplify a method that takes lots of steps and tools, but if you kept your videos super simple, I probably wouldn't know how to aim higher and get more realistic and professional looking results. Thanks a lot.

I know this is the professional way but jeez I would've just put latex layers of the original sculpt, yeah you lose some detail but it's so much more quick and easy! These did turn out awesome though and very professional looking!

+Lizzie Twig yeah, I mean I LOVE the texture these have and you wouldn't get that as well with layering latex on the sculpt but you could somehow recreate it after with cotton wool & latex layers or something for still less effort/materials. But I do like the finished look of these and this is the "proper" what to make them, each to their own way I guess.

Random tip. if you can't find a makeup adhesive. or if you go the full on basic papermache route. liquid bandage (find it in the pharmacy) works last minute for very light things you need to glue on. It's god a consistency like spirit gum, but isn't super tacky. but if you use it similarly to spirit gum it will hold light things on your face. I've used it to glue horns onto my head in the past. But you have to hold it in for a long ass time..

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the monster clay you used does not dry and that's why it was so easy to remove from the cement mold? I used the only clay I had around which was amaco air dry clay and it did not go well at all.

I'm not experienced with silicone so would gelatin serve the same purpose? and would it work with the cap plastic?
@Freakmo
@Freakmo 8 лет назад
+Erin Jung You can use gelatine, yeah! You can use it in the silicone moulds or in a flat-mould made out of ultra cal-30 too. In my vampire forehead video it goes over how :) If you get thin enough edges you can blend out the gelatine with with hazel. The only downside is gelatine gets broken down by heat and moisture, so it's not recommended to wear it in hot conditions. I have heard of people encpasulating it as well, but because it can be dissolved by itself (if it's thin enough, unlike silicone) most people don't encapsulate it.

Is the cap plastic necessary or can you do this without it?
@Freakmo
@Freakmo 8 лет назад
+Plina You can do silicone without cap plastic, it just means there's usually going to be a visible edge. You can use something like Third Degree or Sculpt Gel (out of kit silicone pastes) to create a seamless edge from the silicone to the skin.
