That certainly was a scorcher yesterday. Our neighbours to the south would not believe it was 95 F with a "feels like" of 115 F. Today not quite so bad, only 108 with the humidex.

Leaving the vents white actually looks quite nice too. You probably could do either way. Looks very good. Curious if you'll end up noticing a big difference down in the shed temperature wise. But having that attic space ventilated is a good thing.

If the attic is not vented it will become a haven for mold from vapor condensing on the roof on colder days.

I've always been impressed with your eye for design and proportion. The vents are "just for a shed" but the proportions are beautiful. And we see that in everthing, from amp enclosures to porch columns. A video on how you think about design would be interesting.

So nice to see the screen installed before you put them in place. Every house I have ever owned I had to trudge up to the attic to put wire and screen over the vents to keep the critters out.

Nice work. I just did something similar to a couple of Tuff Sheds. Although there is so much heat that gets built up here in Southern California that I added a 12 V solar panel and wired in some fans. Now the fans run as long as the sun is shining, so the heat is eliminated. Works great.

Those vents look really nice. I do like the contrast of the white against the darker colour of the walls but not being there I really can't judge how they really look. It'll be interesting to see what they look like painted the same colour. I bought one of those plastic gable vents from Turksra lumber when I made my shed about 6 years ago. Not as nice as yours. The problem I had with mine is that snow would blow into the shed via the gable vent. I ended up covering the vent on the inside with gorilla tape and putting in normal roof vents.

Love this, don't think I'd ever be able to comprehend the jig but watching a few times I kind of grasped it. I'll probably check out the article after this to see if it's mentioned but how did you get the spacing so perfect?

How did you measure for the length of the louvers with the compound angle?
@Terryblount
@Terryblount 2 года назад
I've got to make one of these but I'm thinking that it will be easier and faster to just attach a piece of roofing metal to the frame and cut out luvers on three sides and bend them out. Even thought they won't overlap they are 2 feet under the roof overhang and right at the top.

Hi John Very nice look! I am in the process of building an 8x12 insulated small workshop. I'm trying to decide on which method to vent the insulated attic space. Ridge vent /soffit perhaps, but to my eye the gable end venting looks great. My question is would I have to use soffit vents in conjunction with the gable end vents ? Do you have soffit vents in your insulated shed? Thanks, Steve

I'm sure glad you didn't hold that piece when the nail hit that knot and curled right out. You, obviously had the foresight to avoid that. Me, I would have been holding it and it could have turned into an emergency room visit to pull it out of my thumb. Time for me to re-think how I hold wood. As careful as I think I'm trying to be I'll never stop learning.

3:28 Folks, did you see the knot curl that nail? I had that happen with a 16 penny nail when I was framing up a wall. It came out the back of my hand while I was trying to line up the parts. I was just a kid and didn't know better. John does. That is why his hand was not near the joint he was nailing. :-)

A look very good John. Leave them white. And good design. 2 questions. What's the plan for winter to close them up? I know it's not your regular work space but it will get cold (just tack a couple of boards over them????). 2. Where can I buy the Glue Nozzle Cutter LOL
@IBuildItHome
@IBuildItHome 6 лет назад
You don't close the vents - the attic space needs to be open year round.
@jeremyspecce
@jeremyspecce 6 лет назад
I Build It Home YES! A common misconception that the attic should be warm in the winter. Especially in a heated space you want that cold buffer so the snow (this is Canada, after all) doesn't melt from underneath, which will eventually cause ice dams, and I'm sure mold and other issues.
@leapinglemurcraftworks6426
@leapinglemurcraftworks6426 6 лет назад
Those look great. Is your miter saw not capable of compound miter joints? Fantastic work around with the band saw jig - not everyone can wrap their mind around how to set something like that up. Also, do you have a ridge vent in the roof? If not, that would be a simple thing to do to help the air flow in the "attic" space. Some times your "simple" projects are the most interesting. Scott
@IBuildItHome
@IBuildItHome 6 лет назад
Not much point putting in gable vents if there's already a ridge vent. Ridge vents work with soffit vents.
@leapinglemurcraftworks6426
@leapinglemurcraftworks6426 6 лет назад
I Build It Home - thanks, I did not know that. I just figured hot air rises and a current would be created and keep it cooler
@IBuildItHome
@IBuildItHome 6 лет назад
It needs flow from one to the other. If you open the ridge (which is not actually a simple thing to do either), then the air will flow from the gable vent straight out the ridge without really disturbing the air beneath. Gable vents can work on their own, or with soffit vents, but not with ridge vents or regular roof vents.

What kind of paint sprayer is that? The paint container looked different than most I've seen. Also did you spray latex through it? I've been looking for a gun that can spray latex for cabinets and other smaller items I don't want to use my airless on. I tried one of those paint sprayers that come with there own little pump and supposed to spray latex oils etc. But it didn't spray any of them that well. It was a Wagner.
