I've got a huge rosemary bush in my yard that's over 7 years old and somehow survived the South Florida humidity. I think it originated as a novelty centerpiece from a Christmas party many years ago and has managed to survive. Tough plant that smells amazing
My rosemary lasted 5 years in my garden bed out front, the -30 windchill temps before Christmas killed it😭😭 I was so crushed. I already tried to sow some seeds again but this video is super helpful!! Thanks😊
I had a rosemary plant like that too it lasted years it it turned into a bush about 3.5 ft. wide. Then one winter we had a really heavy snow and my Rosemary didn't make it🙁.
I had 1 grocery store rosemary plant that I planted in a long redwood planter box. It survived moving, drought, everything. It grew to be a hedge that thrived on neglect.
I learned years ago that it is always a good idea to cut several sprigs from my rosemary in the fall and place them in a glass of water in the windowsill to root. This way I can always replace my outdoor rosemary bush if it dies from the cold.
@@cantseetheforestforthetree9673 Oh wow!! Thanks for the info on that, I will certainly make sure to do that from now on. That would’ve saved me so much heartache over losing my giant shrub of rosemary this year.
Wow! Here in Minnesota it's super easy to cold stratify using winter sowing. I always thought of rosemary as a tropical plant so I've never stratified it! That explains a lot! Thanks so much for the info!
Thank you! I've had poor success growing and maintaining Rosemary. A super herb that I want all the time! I just sprouted my first one and will use your tips :-)
i never realized how tricky it was to get rosemary to grow from seeds! we had huge rosemary bushes in my childhood yard, they seemed like the most durable plant back there. our old dog would actually sleep in one of them and she would come inside smelling of rosemary. they got to be somewhat of a nuisance and were removed long after i moved out, but they've become associated with some nostalgia and good memories for me. i was hoping to grow my own but it kinda seems like i'll be biting off more than i can chew. this video is very helpful though. wish me luck!
I had a plant that was about 10 years old. My grandsons love to pull off the leaves and throwing them around. One day they decided to plant some on the side of my house along with sage. They didnt tell me and before I knew it I have a fabulous sage plant and Rosemary plant. Amazing!
You did it!! Great I have Rosemary seeds, I covered the seeds in tissues and sprayed water and put it in a closed box and kept it in a dark place, as I usually do for other seeds, it's been 2 weeks, I'm not seeing any difference, it did bulge a little, I'm gonna try this video's steps in another box now, I'm from India and always have a tropical conditions and temperature now is 31°c and it always stays warm and hot here, so what do you suggest to sprout Rosemary here
Wow, thank you for including a vegan option. That is amazing and very thoughtful of you. Edit: Oh just realized VegaGrow is YOUR product that you sell on your website. That's awesome! Definitely buying some! Appreciate you, Luke. Edit #2: You just sold a 6 lb bag of VegaGrow. Can't wait to receive it!
Thanks for the advice. I have somehow managed to accidentally grow rosemary in the humid lower Midwest. Don't know how I did it but it can be done. Had that plant 2 years. Maybe used the Rosemary three times. Still it looked and smelled nice. This go around I will hopefully harvest more.
This is perfect! I had read how finicky rosemary is to grow from seed, but I didn’t know HOW finicky. I bought some seeds this season and have been completely disheartened by the only cells in the block without any greenery showing yet. This video answers all of my questions. Thank you, sir!
I learned something new! Somehow I missed that Rosemary is similar to Lavender. That makes so much sense why it takes so long to grow. I currently have two Rosemary and one Lavender (both from MIgardener) growing under lights and it is true how slow they are. They've been at it since February and they're still only a few inches tall, but they are healthy. I germinated mine in soil blocks and they seem to be very happy in them (started in 3/4" and upped to 2").
Very good instructions, thank you I put few in a tissue, sprayed water, put em in a closed box kept it in a dark place, it's been 2 weeks and it has a jelly coating no sprout, i have few more seeds I'll try with your steps
I really thankful of you making such a confusing topic as growing rosemary and to an extent lavender because they are in similar family as simple as this that we can easily remember to do. :)
Thank you so much on the rosemary tips. I’ve been through two packs of seeds now I just planted my third. I’m going to take the dome off it now out of those two packs of seeds I had six sprouts 🌱 🤷🏻♂️
That's funny because I've grown lavender from seed before but I have yet to grow or overwinter rosemary successfully. This year I tried the winter sowing (in the milk jugs) so fingers crossed!
@@Nikki-mx5my 95-98% of my plants grow following this method. I even had seeds from 2016 that I just threw in just to see (I had plenty of jugs this year) and they all grew!! I check them today. In fact, now it's over planted because I didn't think they'd grow or maybe just a few but wow!
@@wholefoodslifestyles3603 what's winter sowing method, I'm from India, do you have any suggestion how this method can help me germinate my Rosemary seeds
By coincidence I have rosemary seeds that just germinated a few days ago. I resorted to start from seed because all of my rosemary plants didn't make it through the winter even though the winter on Long Island was very mild. Thanks for this video, I hope my seeds make it.
You literally read my mind! Stratifying seeds now…lavender, rosemary, & snapdragons. I sprouted lavender directly in the garden back in February, but of course the weather was cooler. Wondering if it works for sage & onions as well . 🤔
How do you stratify the seeds, I have Rosemary seeds, I covered the seeds in tissues and sprayed water and put it in a closed box and kept it in a dark place, as I usually do for other seeds, it's been 2 weeks, I'm not seeing any difference, it did bulge a little, I'm gonna try this video's steps in another box now, so does this stratification helps any much to successfully sprout Rosemary, I'm from India and always have a tropical conditions and temperature is 31°c and it always stays warm and hot here, so what do you suggest to sprout Rosemary here
@lalalalaeaahh8079 it's cold stratify. In the beginning of his video, he explained, putting them in the refrigerator or freezer. Anyways, some seeds need to be cold to germinate. I hope this helped you out. I'm in zone 6a and just learned about winter sowing it's a game changer for us in colder climates! I love it 😀 ❤
I’m growing rosemary for the first time this year. Already messed up! Didn’t refrigerate seeds first, put in a large pot, and have the soil quite damp!! Wow. Thanks for the education. I’ll restart tomorrow!
interesting i actually never heard of stratifying but i planted my seeds in a starter tray out doors and we had 2 weeks cold front, i've only seen 1 seed out of an entire pack germinate :( i was a bit discouraged thinking i killed them all, but MAYBE with the turn in weather and my little green house they will start to sprout and now with your info I can take better care of them :) informative, +1 sub +1 like
🤣 We don't sing our words up north like yall do in the south (which is so cute, lol). I had to laugh at your comment because my grandparents were always telling me to talk slower when I was a child.
I’ve always found rosemary one of the easiest herbs to grow but have never tried from seed. I just take a cutting from an established plant. Strip the leaves from the lower 1-2 inches. And stick that in soil, keep it moist, and You have a new plant in a few weeks.
I just sowed my rosemary seeds today before I watched the video. I’m in Egypt where it’s warm and sunny this time of the year. But I put them in plastic cups, spayed them a little and covered them with a transparent plastic sheet. Hope they won’t take as long to germinate.
My rosemary from MI Gardner Literaly took a week to germinate. I sarted them in January so they are nicely established by now ready to put into the garden. Luke can you please give me some advice on sprouting the milk thistle I purcased from you guys as I have tried to germinate it with no sucess thus far . Thanks
I have grown rosemary from seed but it is soooo slow. It is very easy to propagate from cuttings. Take 6” cuttings, strip off the bottom 4 inches of leaves, dip in rooting hormone and stick a bunch of them in a pot with coco coir. I keep them in a plastic storage box under moderate lights for a week or two then transplant into soil when there are a few roots.
Thank you for this video. And here I thought it was ALL me. Apparently it's the seeds and a little bit of me. Rosemary is definitely hard to get started. I planted about 30 of them and only had 4 come up. I knew nothing about putting them in the fridge for 3 weeks. Would putting them in the freezer for a few days work the same? I've put some seeds in the freezer before for a week or 2 to simulate winter. Is rosemary a perennial in Zone 5 ( mid Eastern Ohio)? Never had any luck with it coming back every year. Not sure if I'm doing it right.
This might be a silly question but i am a 1st time grower. Do you plant the seed at the bottom before putting potting soil in, or does it matter how you put them in the cell containers? thank you for your time!
No, we put the soil in any container we use and plant the seed not so deep, may be middle, most preferable at the top layer with soil just covering the seeds
Rosemary is one of the easiest plants to propagate from cuttings for people that can’t get them going from seed you can buy 1 plant from a big box store and make as many as you want from that plant
I'm a bit curious as to how you transplant these small plants maybe 2 or 3 times without damaging them. You took them from a 200 cell seed starter to a 120 plant growing planter, but you didn't show us how you did that. I'd like to see your methods for same. TIA!
What about using coco coir instead of peatmoss to make seed starting soil. I use 3 parts coco coir, one part vermiculite, 1/2 part perlite, plus a handful of worm castings.
What about the sunlight ? Will it survive inside the home ? My plant didn't survive after I brought in the home. It was doing so well in summer. Just wondering, where did I go wrong.
I've been bringing my rosemary in for a few years now. It does well for me under a cheap grow bulb I put in a lamp. Rosemary really does not like to be watered and hates having wet roots. Mine gets a drink maybe every 2 or 3 weeks. It's one of the few plants that will take in water through it's leaves so I lightly mist a couple times a week. Soon I'll start hardening mine back off and get it outside again.
Rosemary LOVES light and can be grown inside successfully. The best results are to put it under a lamp or in a put that sits on one of those wheeled tray things and move it with the seasons to make sure it's in the sunniest window you have.
Are there any cold hardy varieties of rosemary you would recommend? I'm in zone 7b and I haven't figured out how to get my rosemary to survive the winter.
I think the problem arises with Rosemary due to soil and overcare, most multi purpose composts are built to retain moisture and most herbs and vegatables lap it up, they love constant waterings and there is alot of room for error, and gardeners like to keep busy, maintain plants and overcare, Rosemary you almost have to treat as a mix between a normal herb and a cactus or succulent, obviously it isnt a cactus or succulent but it likes to be kept more on the dry side and have well drained soil that doesnt retain too much moisture, infact ive heard a cactus soil can be very beneficial for it, i haven't tried yet though, obviously the difference though is Rosemary does still like quite a high humidity (although still low) compared to say a succulent, i think this is why they are difficult, there at a strange middle ground between the differences in care
When you propagate Rosemary does the cutting get big and branchy like the established Rosemary? I took several cuttings last year and got them to root but they've basically stayed a single sprig of Rosemary all winter long and now into spring 😂 Does anyone have experience with Rosemary cuttings that can help me with this question? Tia
Understand Rosemary in 70º temps once germinated but have read, to germinate, a temp of 80º is beneficial. I have also been told that Rosemary seeds need light to germinate. Would appreciate your comments on these two thoughts/suggestions to get Rosemary to germinate, please.
Whenever I cold stratify rosemary seeds before I put them in the fridge they develop a gel coating similar to basil seeds and when I take them out the gel coating is gone and my seeds don’t germinate can you help me troubleshoot this ?
i grew rosemary from seed this year. I started 2 pots of it,, both germinated back in early February today one pot is about 5 inches tall and flourishing,,, the other pot is 2 inches tall and does not seem to be growing but also does not seem sick at all... i am super confused,, they grew side by side with same seeds same soil same light same temps same everything and indoors,,, no pests
My rosemary grew fine this year but I'm struggling with lavender and I even used cold stratification and nothing... Herbs are not my thing I'm guessing 😔
We can’t grow rosemary outside here, so over the years I’ve trained a rosemary ball topiary. It is my most prized plant possession. My husband accuses me of getting my greenhouse just to put the rosemary in. He might be right.
I think I’ll just buy one at the grocery store. I planted seeds, but only 1 sprouted. I tore down my giant rosemary bush, now I realize that was a big mistake.
You only need one rosemary bush for a family, and if you live in a warm dry climate it will produce more than you will ever need and you don't have to do anything to it ever again. Just buy one bush, you're done for life, I can't imagine needing to grow it from seed for any reason lol
It’s too bad that I’ve watched this video after planting my rosemary. I definitely thought rosemary was easier to grow. We’ll see if my seeds even sprout
@@shannonschjolin6253 Several sources states that it does. So I recommend doing research on it, if that is something that you are interested in. We grow herbs as a way to deter pests. Only found recently that ticks are one of the pests that hate rosemary.
